please tell me why. I am looking to buy my first dslr but i have good experience shooting photos. Not a pro, but intermediate so which one to get. thanks.
I'd recommend the D40 over the D40x and D60, because the less megapixels means that your high ISO photographs will look less noisy (and that's one of the major reasons to buy a DSLR). The D40 has 6 M.P. which allows excellent prints up to 8"x10", and so-so prints for larger sizes. If you really need to print larger than 8"x10" without any loss of image quality, get the D40x or D60... otherwise, get the D40. You'll probably upgrade eventually anyway, so you might as well start with the cheapest
Well, I don't know if it makes anybody's choices easier - but Ken Rockwell suggests getting the Nikon D40 if you are just getting started with DSLRs. Even though it is only 6MP, it will still look better than most Point and Shoots because of the lens.
which one best suits your budget (factoring in any lenses, flashes, battery packs etc you wish to buy)
And which one feels best in your hands whilst shooting (demand that the sales people let you handle and take some shots with the showroom cameras otherwise go somewhere else)
I went with the EOS 400D with 18-55mm and 75-300 kit zoom lenses, a 1gb card, tamrac velocity bag and a cheap (but good and sturdy tripod)
The Olympus E510 comes with a 14-42mm lens now. Its a clean slr starter kit, I am getting one. I have shot with the Xti and it shows on the screen really nice but when you upload it just doesn't look as nice as it did.
I ordered the E-510 at amazon for $650 with two lenses. I thought it had the best features for the price compared to other entry-level DSLRs. I also liked Sony Alpha a100 but I sort of fell in love with the Olympus one since it had same features a100 had plus more such as live-view.
Why does everyone prenounce Nikon wrong?? It´s not N-eye-kon, it´s Neekon, people!!!! I heard they call it like this in the US, it souds ridiculous!

Never EVER EVER buy a Canon or Olympus camera. Some of the worst camera manufacturers ever.
Always, ALWAYS buy Nikon.

ahhh im getting one of these in a couple weeks
idk whether to get the d40x or the xti
help plzzz

both are really great cameras. the 400d(xti) has more features & is compatible w/ more canon lenses than the d40x is w/ some nikon lenses.

both cameras are equally as capable.
Choose your camera based on:
which one best suits your budget (factoring in any lenses, flashes, battery packs etc you wish to buy)
And which one feels best in your hands whilst shooting (demand that the sales people let you handle and take some shots with the showroom cameras otherwise go somewhere else)

I'll go for a Nikon D40x. It's a hard decision but I think the Nikon system fits best to my personal preferences.
