oh my god, this song...the 80's... me and my brothers on the beach making castles in the sand...days like years...the soundtrack of my life...Now please, let me cry alone
Give me a break. The situation in Japan is a result of a natural disaster. Not because nuclear power is bad, and evil, and can end the world. Fear mongering bullshit.
Look, what's happening in Japan is a result of a natural disaster. It's impossible to prepare for an earthquake of that magnitude. There was nothing wrong with the plant(s) before the earthquake. It stands to reason that when there is an earthquake with such force, something is bound to go wrong.
There is nothing wrong with nuclear power. If you want to keep powering our world with coal and natural gas, so be it. We won't pay for it. The next generation will.
@MegaDrProfessor have you heard of renewable energy? i have. besides, it all doesn't matter. nuclear power isn't safe as you can see, regardless of cause. we both live on this planet, i have to suffer your consequences. i don't want it.
@MegaDrProfessor THE NEXT GENERATION WILL BE DRAMATIC AFFECTED BY AN MELTDOWN IN JAPAN !
IT´S A PRADOX TO SAY THAT NUCLEAR POWER IS BETTER FOR THE PLANT THAN COAL ; BUT IF SOMETHING WENT WRONG WITH NUCLEAR POWER IT´S INCREDIBLE DIASTER FOR EVERYBODY AND YOU CAN´T CONTROL IT NUCLEAR POWER SO IT SOULD BE FORBIDDEN!
Oh my gayness. wow so gay im prolly gonna go look to youthanasia because i would rather die than live with this video within a 500,000,000 mile radius. and i dont have enough money to move that far.
THIS SONG IS ABOUT A POSSIBLE NUCLEAR MELTDOWN NOW WE HAVE THIS SITUATION IN FUKUSHIMA. TWO YEARS AFTER THIS SONG WAS RELEASED WAS THE CHERNOBYL DISASTER!
Conditions have already deteriorated in the first reactor and there is a second that is already venting. 3 more are also declared under state emergency. Fuel rods are exposed in the first reactor! Reported by local media.
The anti-nuclear message was a tiresome. There's no avoiding resorting to it eventually. If a nuclear blast over a populous like this video portrays happens, it's vastly more likely to come from a terrorist attack brought about by buying middle-eastern oil.
We should have gone nuclear power ages ago to have ensured a safer today.
90% of France's electrical power comes from nuclear power. How could France, the epicenter of liberal indoctrination, have gotten this right and not the rest of us?
Midge Ure is sooo gorgeous!! I'd love to be snuggled up in bed with him. Petite men are always more sexy. Who wants a heavy, great sweating fat lump on top of you?
One of the best 80s tunes - i.e. one of the best tunes ever written and recorded. Nothing wil surpass the 80s. It had everything. The hooks, the idea, the magic... And the video is awasome too.
@kruegerrand Agreed! I was just playing the song "If I Was" by Ultravox which someone has used as the song for a montage of clips from the 1992 movie Wuthering Heights and it has meaning which resonates throughout.
@purpleTHEwhite This song is for me very special and unforgettable. My childhood, too, but I was talking about the song. I think you misunderstood me. (;
Dan-singgggg with tearzzzzz -zin mi-yiiiiiiis. Midge Ure had such a great singing style. He was as good as Bing or Sinatra. Just another example of how great the legitimate 80's were.
The video was about an accident at a nuclear power plant, but the song came out in the midst of nuclear war worries in the 1980's during the weapons build-up between the US and the USSR. The lyrics work either way: a Chernobyl-like incident or nuclear warheads on their way.
Katastrofa Nuklearna w stylu ameryki ( Każdy o niej wie) nie jak w Czarnobylu gdzie ludność dowiedziała się dopiero duch 2 dnia po katastrofie we czasie ewakuacji
the moment when he gets in and hugs her is such an emotional scene..everyone would dance with tears in their eyes in such occasion, especially if they had a baby..it made me cry and realize once more that wo should live every moment as our last..
While there are a lot of comments about nuclear war and the Cold War, this video is still more relevant today than that simply because it isn't about nuclear war, but nuclear power stations. The technicians at the start are very ominously similar to the technicians who inadvertently triggered the Chernobyl disaster. There was a BBC dramatic re-enactment of how the disaster started and it is too similar to this video for comfort. With nuclear power, war isn't necessary to destroy, only a glitch.
I was i my late teens in 1984. I remember the discussions about what we would do when they dropped the bomb. we discussed how we would be shore to get killed instantly by the blast. To day i sounds a bit funny because i didn't happen, but at the time it was very real. I live in Denmark and the iron curtin was like a 100 miles away. And it was very hard to get a job (sounds familiar to day)
The '80 was not all fun and games, but it has left us with some really great music!
@jespervad Agree dude, seems crazy lookin back and seeing how the world has changed since then, i've got to admit iam a lot more sinical towards, well , everything , since '84'. :)
@toedlich666 80's is long gone but it's music was definitely better. You probably would've enjoyed it if you had lived back then, but remember...there was no internet or ipods or pc's, & very few only had apple macintosh. music was on vinyl & tape, no cd's even in 84. The cold war was still on, & WW3 was much closer than it is now, hmmm, i guess the cold war was much better than the idiocy of the terrorists.
@mistofoles looks exactly like the Ikea catalogues of today to be honest..wood flooring with crappy fake pine furniture and a matress plonked on the floor..
@ChrisAFC11 Doubt it. During the eighties, the topic of nuclear war seemed to come up a lot. It was on the news frequently due to the arms build up under the Regean era. At one point I think there was enough fire power to destroy the world 100 times over. Consequently there were a lot of songs such as this about us all being nuked and tv progammes such as Threads and The Day After which scared the Bejesus out of us. To top it all many books were written about how to survive a nuclear attack.
That is true and of course they are exaggerating here. But in some way a nuclear strike is even better than a nuclear meltdown, since you'll be killed instantaneously in the first case and gonna rot to death in the other case.
@VannevarBush Im sorry, you will not be killed instantaneously in a nuclear strike. Or at least, the majority of people wont be. In case of a large scale nuclear war, most victims would fall during the months after the bombardment, due to all sorts of scarcities: famine, disease, lack of fuel and shelter, social chaos, etc... and the spectre of radiation poisoning always closeby. You should see the movie Threads, a 1984 docudrama about nuclear holocaust, no doubt the inspiration for this clip
Okay that might be true. I d put it this way: If there is a nuclear strike the chance of being killed instantly is higher than in case of a nuclear meltdown.
Thanks for the info on the docudrama.. I ll look it up.

@Nosferatu64 Vielen Dank für die Informationen. Mir graut vor, was passieren würde, wenn die Welt Weltkrieg 3 konfrontiert zu denken. Ich hoffe, das wird nicht passieren.
@bedfordcrusader If you have seen an episode of History channel, the first episode of a nuclear bomb, wont be deadly, but the 2nd, 3rd, 4th coming episode would be so deadly that 3/4 of the humans would be wipe out of planet earth. Now think about it.
What a neat little body Midge has got. Little men are much better in bed, smaller, lighter and more efficient. Who the hell wants a 6ft 1 fat heavy lump on top of them? Especially for a relatively small woman like me.
Carolina Zorrilla, Sn Jn Argentina, te busco amiga del alma esta canción la ponía en nuestras chalras por el msn de los finales de 90s...no me olvides!
You can't remember the feeling of 1984. This and other sad songs where the life style of this year. People really thought it will end with a nuclear burst soon. Not as happy as the fun generation of today think it was.
But yes the music was better - because we had to care about more then just love and money - we had to care for our (and mankinds) survival.
@llothar68 I would say that our generation (80's), lived life to the fullest because of the Cold War threat. That is why the youth of the day was a happy one and it precisely the brilliant music produced during that decade that brought so much fulfillment and good vibes to our young lives.

The only Ultravox for Me is the original set with Stevie "Aka John Foxx" on vocals.
From being a truly original band, (I saw them live back in 78)

odd how life seemed better when we were under threat of a nuclear war.....a common enemy. Now we just look in our own towns for someone to blame...
bedfordcrusader 1 year ago
@bedfordcrusader If you have seen an episode of History channel, the first episode of a nuclear bomb, wont be deadly, but the 2nd, 3rd, 4th coming episode would be so deadly that 3/4 of the humans would be wipe out of planet earth. Now think about it.

What a neat little body Midge has got. Little men are much better in bed, smaller, lighter and more efficient. Who the hell wants a 6ft 1 fat heavy lump on top of them? Especially for a relatively small woman like me.

@catarinne88
You can't remember the feeling of 1984. This and other sad songs where the life style of this year. People really thought it will end with a nuclear burst soon. Not as happy as the fun generation of today think it was.
But yes the music was better - because we had to care about more then just love and money - we had to care for our (and mankinds) survival.
llothar68 1 year ago
@llothar68 I would say that our generation (80's), lived life to the fullest because of the Cold War threat. That is why the youth of the day was a happy one and it precisely the brilliant music produced during that decade that brought so much fulfillment and good vibes to our young lives.
