Wow Pat put's into words the germination of talent through the child-like fascination and the initial ecstasy of the discovery of the sounds/colors contained in one note. To keep this experience throughout life is a remarkable lesson to learn.
oh c'mon. This is self absorbed patronizing nonsense. Shaddup and play your guitar, man. We know the deal. We all play and love music, and no one wants to do their homework. Jeeez
Absolute respect for Pat Martino, first time i heard him play, I asked to myself? Who is playing? My friend Eddy replied: Pat Martino. Right away I found myself in a music store buying his CD. His playing shows no doubt on the guitar; he knows how to play the instrument.
"An answer that transcends all questions..it always comes back to the same answer...the love of!".....that is a profound phrase Pat, no wonder that a man with that depth produces such a fantastic music...thanks for being you Pat.
@phillyphife not QUITE the buddha incarnate. if he were the buddha incarnate, he'd be talking about equanimity, about following the middle way. but here pat martino is going on and on about "ecstasy," which would appear to be an "extreme," i.e., a deviation from the middle way.
After being a fan of Pat's for over 30 years, I've stopped trying to understand his rather abstract discussions of things like this and just be content to hear him play. He's said, "Music is food; the guitar is a fork". Well, okay Pat. It's just that the most of us other guitarists have more trouble using our utensils than you do.
That's an awesome quote...that pat said. Pat also said, the guitar is like your car, it takes you places, and since you are the driver/owner of the car, you are the one that has to decide where you want to go with it. Or it can sit in your driveway and not go anywhere.
If you want to further understand what Pat is saying, I think that one should take up a study in the many eastern spiritual philosophies. Of course it isn't exactly what he is saying, but from my learning and studies of eastern thought and spirituality and my own philosophy, I understand Pat in a way.

Just listen to what Pat is saying - as many times as necessary. Then spend the time, whatever your area. The result will be worth it.

He's a living inspiration! I discovered Martino's music only recently and he became my instant guitar hero. What a great man! God Bless him...

To see him live on stage you will be convinced he isn't human, but from a better world. I will never forget witnessing him live.

I just saw him play with his trio (B3 organ and drums). It was amazing. Definitely one of the best jazz shows I've seen.

Awesome guitarist but.....What on earth is he talking about?
ZQUIDGE 3 years ago
He had a brain aneurism which caused him catastrophic memory loss. He had to re-learn how to play, mostly by listening to his own records.

it's hard to concentrate on what he's saying with those incredible lines going on in the background, flawless!

Why does he say "...ink", like in string(nk)?
Is that a form of dialect from his native town?
Great guitarist by the way...
