So, It looks like he did regain control, but he did have some chutes...but as far as I know most people don't actually have chutes with them when they hanglide do they?
I guess when your doing acro they take different precautions.
Hm I'm interested in the emergency procedures in hang gliding. There are two reserve canopys in the movie, is that the common way to carry to chutes and deploy both of them in case of an emergency?
It looks to me as if the pilot lands somewhat head-down. Looks pretty dangerous to me. Is there no way of cutting of the glider in such a situation?
@fenix159 Most hang glider pilots carry only a single parachute, but in acrobatics it's customary to have a second one as a backup due to the increased liklihood of deployment or entaglement when deploying during extreme maneuvers. Cutting out of the glider could be done, but could be hard except in perfect conditions. It's safer to stay attached as it slows the descent, plus the glider may have only minor damage so the chute saves the glider as well.
at 0:03 - 0:04 it's obvious he's high speed stalled, at 0:07 he's still got the bar around trim as the forward tumble gets going through 0:08, he's still at trim bar position and it's too late. pulling in, being able to bend at the waist and get compact in the onset of a tumble will prevent what happens at 0:09, getting flailed and losing the bar, contacting spars, not sure where the downtube broke, could have broken in the high speed stall, any contact with the pilot on that question??
i think US pilot Jeff O'Brien blogged that the US team was due to fly off Chabre and do a bit of an acro show the same afternoon, but they decided not to - after seeing this guy they decided the air was probably a little bit rough, so yes, i think you read right.
Just shut the frenchman up and let me enjoy the crash.

you would think that Yngwie Malmsteen would stop playing his guitar during a spectacular event like this... but no.

mostly my financial situation.
Should I diversify with foreign investments or hold bonds for another quarter.
Then I think about ham.

Did I read right earlier that some said it was a little rough conditions for acro that day?
Did that contribute to this?

did his 1st chute come out..on its own?
looked like he got control back, before he ended up on' top'....
acrazedmaniac 2 years ago
no, he threw his first reserve himself. he broke an upright apparently, so he wouldn't have been able to recover normal flight.
