Ranting aside, I really enjoyed Avatar cause it was true cinematic eye candy, I also fell in love with the culture that was created, and I really cared about the characters. Also, as an Animator, I couldn't help but admire the artistry. As a general audience member, I was simply transported. Brilliant movie. :-)

@DarenHD because it was 40 minute long action scene and my favourite things about films most of the time is the action scenes, also most films are shit, and i probably have 100 favourite films so its not saying much when i say avatar is one of my favourite,

This is all the Academy voters had to see to take Zoe's wonderful performances seriously, IMO.
I mean, she's emoting better than most of 2009 nominees, IMO. And, this is wonderful transformation. Not just with CGI makeup, but Zoe was the first person to learn Na'vi (a made-up language) and act with the accent. All of the other English-speaking Na'vi copied her performance. She was the heart of Avatar.

Um, you basically can with the Collector's Edition. You put in the 3rd disc of bonus features and choose "Scene Deconstruction" and you see every moment with the Na'vi - or almost every moment - like this. It's freakin' awesome. If anyone you know ever says that Avatar would be nothing without the effects, just show them that scene deconstruction footage. It's amazing how much the actors are actually carrying the film with this awesome, classic story.

I don't know if I would say the Tolkien story by itself was better than Avatar. But, the films... are lacking IMO. We'll have to wait and see, but I think if Avatar 2 and 3 deliver as well as Avatar 1, this could prove to be the greatest trilogy in film history.
More than the original SW trilogy or LOTR? face it, Jackson's LOTR films kicked ass and put Tolkein's stories on film well and turned a once unfilmable book series into 3 masterpieces
imo (and im just putting this out there) LOTR isn't even in the same genre as Avatar really--Avatar is sci fi while LOTR is legit fantasy. Harry Potter is fantasy too but not to the extent that LOTR uses. All of them are good for their own reasons (heck i grew up on Harry Potter and LOTR at practically the same time) and Avatar has it's own points--even if it is pocahontas w/special effects.
@Michaelmop and i don't really think you can even begin to compare Fantasy with Science fiction--they're too different. it's like comparing apples to tomatoes; sure their similar in the fact that they're red but you can't really judge an apple on it's inability to be a tomato....that probly doesn't make any sense. i still think zoe saldana had the best performance in this entire production. i'm saying this not basing on any technicalities but on how convincing she was in playing the most difficult character to portray in this film. all throughout the movie, you will never see a hint of a zoe saldana or any familiar human mannerism in the character. it's just neytiri the na'vi hunter. her expressions had to be adjusted and therefore on her part, calculated. yet, it's very believable and sincere.

I don't know if I would say the Tolkien story by itself was better than Avatar. But, the films... are lacking IMO. We'll have to wait and see, but I think if Avatar 2 and 3 deliver as well as Avatar 1, this could prove to be the greatest trilogy in film history.

imo (and im just putting this out there) LOTR isn't even in the same genre as Avatar really--Avatar is sci fi while LOTR is legit fantasy. Harry Potter is fantasy too but not to the extent that LOTR uses. All of them are good for their own reasons (heck i grew up on Harry Potter and LOTR at practically the same time) and Avatar has it's own points--even if it is pocahontas w/special effects.

@Michaelmop and i don't really think you can even begin to compare Fantasy with Science fiction--they're too different. it's like comparing apples to tomatoes; sure their similar in the fact that they're red but you can't really judge an apple on it's inability to be a tomato....that probly doesn't make any sense. i still think zoe saldana had the best performance in this entire production. i'm saying this not basing on any technicalities but on how convincing she was in playing the most difficult character to portray in this film. all throughout the movie, you will never see a hint of a zoe saldana or any familiar human mannerism in the character. it's just neytiri the na'vi hunter. her expressions had to be adjusted and therefore on her part, calculated. yet, it's very believable and sincere.
