I wanna buy the new ati 7970 when it comes out. Will my stock i7-860 going at 2.8ghz and 8gb of ram bottleneck it at all. (my comp is a dell). Will i need any new cooling either? Im upgrading from a 5770. thanks
@JustCause2Ps3 the 7970 if thats what they call it will be pcie 3 - your system isnt. We dont know yet if it will work or not dude. Some systems will work some wont. If they do work it will only be at pcie2 speeds anyways.

@ericohman if you want 4-4.2GHz then go for the 980 but LGA 2011 is out so you should just get the 3930K for around the same price and better because it is unlocked

@TimeToLiveCustoms Had some issues with dual 6990s on a machine with a 2600 because of the 16 pcie lane limit. Didnt even think to check that when I got it. Ridiculous. You get what you pay for. a 2600 is not as fast for a variety of reasons. Check out futuremark hardware scores. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. If the speed difference is worth it for the money you pay thats a different question. For me it is. Been doing some digging before ordering one of these.
@TimeToLiveCustoms Go read the intel specs. The only reason they even put it to 16 was because the Nvidia court case was in progress. They would have stuck with 4 given the choice. They were trying to lock GPU manufacturers right out. Bit early for that and they paid a huge huge settlement. Really stabbed Nvidia in the back considering they were working together. Some mobos try to compensate with an extra onboard chip to compensate. Its a workaround that doesnt work as well as it might.

@deathscape500 Intel isn't too expensive, i5 2500K beats any AMD chip and it's about 190$. But if you want the best CPU available you will have to pay more, AMD doesn't even get close to 990x that's why they can keep the prices that high. It's actually AMD's fault if you think about it, if they made as powerful chips as Intel prices would be lower!
@x1337H4CK3Rx money would be better spent on a 2600K right now tbh. Its much cheaper and the 990X isnt that much faster, plus you really need to know your stuff to get the best from it.
So buy a 2600K and a 1155 based dual channel motherboard :)

@Nvidia9700MGT the Intel walks all over the AMD cpu's dude. The only CPU that comes close is the Intel 2600K (its 2nd gen and is very fast for the price)
is the cpu core the only voltage you ever change when your tryin to max out your procs the 980 and 970 are pretty similar might need more vtt/qpi voltage
@Hokrollo1 Pretty much makes everything think there are twice as many cores as there really is, so if you hyperthread a 6 core it would appear to be a 12 core.
did you try and check to see what oc you could've gotten with one core? disable ht, etc... boot into windows with one core and see how high you can get it.

On the evga E-LEET Tuning Utility under Voltages tab.. is that ALL i should be tweaking while doing high overclocking? or there more Volts i should go for that be in bios?
@NoxeN83 Don't know if you have got help already, but the best place to go for help with overclocking are the overclockers UK (dot) net forums. There's pretty much always some1 that knows a little bit more. Be specific with your issues though. The guys on there tend to be a bit tetchy when you leave out details.

@stalkerchernobyl then dont buy the 990. The 970 is the same CPU and about half the price. H70 is noisey but the D14 is the best cooler on the planet.
@stalkerchernobyl i would go with the D14 ai idle at stock my 980x is sitting at 19c on the cores and load is 29c on the cores at 4.30ghz idle is 29c on the cores and load is 68c in prime95 after 8 hours of testing

Hi i have a 970 with a asus re3 i am struggling to get over 188 bclk with x10 mem im at 1.35v qpi and am getting random bsod uncorrectable hardware error.....any ideas? would be really grateful of any help u could offer.
With the same setup but with my 920 i could get 209 bclk with x10 mem.
Whenever this used to happen it woul just need 1 more bump of qpi and that would cure it. Tempting to try the 990x but lots of extra £££ :-(
@5699philip really need more details tbh dude. Jump over to my forums and make a thread, make sure you take photos of the bios so I can see everything straight away and Ill be able to tell then.
@umeshtheman what BCLK and volts did you use for 5ghz? Otherwise its the same CPU pretty much dude. The 990X is the best of the 980x and the 970 rolled into one perfect low volt unit.
@umeshtheman Those volts are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to high. for 24/7 you should be on 1.4v max on air. aim for 200x20 first it should do that at near on stock volts if you set it all up properly.
@umeshtheman intel says we could go up to 1.65,,,,and its stable on prime95 for 6 hrs+(max i let it run) one core peaks at 80 degs but the rest around 75 degs.....

Bit off subject but any 1 having issues with amd driver's? Cant update mine, "componant failed" within 20 seconds of installing then it all crashes and i have no drivers / not working at all and have to system restore only way out of it :(
When the sh*t hits the fan for 1366 and it all gets replaced by all the new boring stuff, who are clockers going to turn towards for their fun??? AMD me thinks... Don't know how you guys feel about it, but I've had loads of fun with my Crosshair IV and 965, despite the lack of performance nowadays. Hopefully the newer AM3 ones will clock as well as the Intel stuff right now, and not get phased out by Bulldozer like X58 and sandy bridge. It'll be a real shame to have to use aging HW for fun OC

Hi man, i just got a i7 960 3.20 @ 3.60Ghz, i'm looking to take it to possibly over 4Ghz which should be fairly doable, however. I think i need a new cooler for the CPU, got any good suggestions? The Noctua NHD14 won't fit.
@Inzolity Yeah it does, just remove the red tops. Thats all I ever did when I was using the D14 with GT's. They never get hot anyways dude ;) now go order the D14 :D
@Inzolity A: you dont need the ram cooler. Plain and simple thats pointless and just adds noise. Be they dont get hot without the fits and once the heatsink is fitted you wont see them anyways.
CPU cooling is more important than ram cooling. Mainly cos your ram doesnt need it.

Isn't Metro a badly coded game? if a 990X at 4+Ghz and a 580 can't even pull more than 70FPS, what chance do normal users have? we already know Crysis wasn't coded to run on more than 2 cores, so this doesn't really show the potential of the CPU + GPU..
This chip doesn't really have good value for performance IMO. It didn't even get 60fps in crysis or metro!! Obviously if i have too much money I will buy this in a heart beat but come on mate your fanboy is showing ;)
@ImperviousMason Its a CPU with a stock GPU. GPU is where the FPS really shows. Fanboy? Naaaa just enjoy top end kit mate, I did say that at reasonable clocks the 970 is epic. Just that the 990 will do it at lower volts and clock higher.
This pretty much solidified my decision that the 970 will be my next upgrade. Considering the massive price drop just in the last 24 hours here in Australia (about $300 drop) and it's performance, it's definitely hit the sweet spot. Thanks for the great review Tom!!!

@SymonDymond the lane limit is the board. IE: you bought the wrong one. Gigabyte UD7's have 2x 16 pcie lanes and would have run those cards fine :)

@SymonDymond you are correct 16 is the chipset spec. But the UD7 uses an NF200 chip to give another 16 lanes for full speed crossfire/SLI dude :)

@Hokrollo1 Pretty much makes everything think there are twice as many cores as there really is, so if you hyperthread a 6 core it would appear to be a 12 core.

did you try and check to see what oc you could've gotten with one core? disable ht, etc... boot into windows with one core and see how high you can get it.

Where i can find a guide to show how to TWEAK and OVERCLOCKING on x58 with cards in SLI
im running evga E762 and 990x and evga 580s in sli and corsair dominator GT 2000MHz and going be watercooling the.. cpu... mb... gpu
On the evga E-LEET Tuning Utility under Voltages tab.. is that ALL i should be tweaking while doing high overclocking? or there more Volts i should go for that be in bios?

@NoxeN83 Don't know if you have got help already, but the best place to go for help with overclocking are the overclockers UK (dot) net forums. There's pretty much always some1 that knows a little bit more. Be specific with your issues though. The guys on there tend to be a bit tetchy when you leave out details.

@stalkerchernobyl then dont buy the 990. The 970 is the same CPU and about half the price. H70 is noisey but the D14 is the best cooler on the planet.

@stalkerchernobyl i would go with the D14 ai idle at stock my 980x is sitting at 19c on the cores and load is 29c on the cores at 4.30ghz idle is 29c on the cores and load is 68c in prime95 after 8 hours of testing

Hi i have a 970 with a asus re3 i am struggling to get over 188 bclk with x10 mem im at 1.35v qpi and am getting random bsod uncorrectable hardware error.....any ideas? would be really grateful of any help u could offer.
With the same setup but with my 920 i could get 209 bclk with x10 mem.
Whenever this used to happen it woul just need 1 more bump of qpi and that would cure it. Tempting to try the 990x but lots of extra £££ :-(

@umeshtheman what BCLK and volts did you use for 5ghz? Otherwise its the same CPU pretty much dude. The 990X is the best of the 980x and the 970 rolled into one perfect low volt unit.

@umeshtheman Those volts are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to high. for 24/7 you should be on 1.4v max on air. aim for 200x20 first it should do that at near on stock volts if you set it all up properly.

@umeshtheman intel says we could go up to 1.65,,,,and its stable on prime95 for 6 hrs+(max i let it run) one core peaks at 80 degs but the rest around 75 degs.....

trying to decide on a board for this chip... any sugestions? best board for realiablity and overclocking? anyone? had 2 boars in mind. asus rampage 3 extreme and the otherone was a gigabyte board cant remember name tho. both boards were around 400 bucks. but both have mixed reviews. but i need a board that will take memory standard ddr 3 2000, and support 24 gig ram and triple channel. just for some specs. thanks

This is fine up to a limit but hey, someone people want it all, can't blame ya :)

I know what u mean about the 980x. the cpu is crazy fast but when it came to OCing it doesnt go up so much but i am still very happy with it and if i had a grand atm i wouldnt think twice about buying this cpu

Bit off subject but any 1 having issues with amd driver's? Cant update mine, "componant failed" within 20 seconds of installing then it all crashes and i have no drivers / not working at all and have to system restore only way out of it :(

When the sh*t hits the fan for 1366 and it all gets replaced by all the new boring stuff, who are clockers going to turn towards for their fun??? AMD me thinks... Don't know how you guys feel about it, but I've had loads of fun with my Crosshair IV and 965, despite the lack of performance nowadays. Hopefully the newer AM3 ones will clock as well as the Intel stuff right now, and not get phased out by Bulldozer like X58 and sandy bridge. It'll be a real shame to have to use aging HW for fun OC

LOL anyway, i can run it on Hardcore graphics at 1920x1080 but it lags and not playable but at Advanced graphics @1920x1080 very playble. I got a GTX460 768MB just for information any1 is looking for. Download demo start playing people O.o

Hi man, i just got a i7 960 3.20 @ 3.60Ghz, i'm looking to take it to possibly over 4Ghz which should be fairly doable, however. I think i need a new cooler for the CPU, got any good suggestions? The Noctua NHD14 won't fit.

@Inzolity A: you dont need the ram cooler. Plain and simple thats pointless and just adds noise. Be they dont get hot without the fits and once the heatsink is fitted you wont see them anyways.
CPU cooling is more important than ram cooling. Mainly cos your ram doesnt need it.

Isn't Metro a badly coded game? if a 990X at 4+Ghz and a 580 can't even pull more than 70FPS, what chance do normal users have? we already know Crysis wasn't coded to run on more than 2 cores, so this doesn't really show the potential of the CPU + GPU..

This chip doesn't really have good value for performance IMO. It didn't even get 60fps in crysis or metro!! Obviously if i have too much money I will buy this in a heart beat but come on mate your fanboy is showing ;)

@ImperviousMason Its a CPU with a stock GPU. GPU is where the FPS really shows. Fanboy? Naaaa just enjoy top end kit mate, I did say that at reasonable clocks the 970 is epic. Just that the 990 will do it at lower volts and clock higher.

This pretty much solidified my decision that the 970 will be my next upgrade. Considering the massive price drop just in the last 24 hours here in Australia (about $300 drop) and it's performance, it's definitely hit the sweet spot. Thanks for the great review Tom!!!
