I had bad RSI symptoms in my arms that were not healing after almost 2 months of physical therapy. They finally tried this on me (but with a metal tool) and I felt better immediately-definitely recommend for micro-traumas as a result of RSIs.
As a Western PT that was tired of poor results I started using these techniques in the clinic. My results have blown me away. I use this technique with all of my overuse injury patients, combined with manual stretching and finishing it all off with some facilitation of postural re-ed. Works great. Looks painful, but it doesn't hurt. Does a hickie hurt when you get one? Gotta let the person know that they will be red for a few days up to a week.
I find that it is good for chronic as well as acute illness and also for the results of past trauma. That means you dont need to be "sick" (like with the flu or bronchitis), but that it is also good for tension that has built up as a result of stress or after a past injury. Often the body has protections from injuries that happened long ago which have blocked flow of energy ever since.
It doesn't hurt as bad as it looks. If you've never had it done, it will be very uncomfortable. The skin will have a heated sensation. The darker red the skin gets, it means there is a lot of stagnation or simply, the person is very sick (cold, bronchitis, flu, etc.). There is no point in getting gua sha if you're not sick.
You can use a Chinese soup spoon and get someone to do it for you. If you want to know what it feels like get yourself a spoon and repeatedly rub it down (north to south) on your skin until it starts to go slightly pink. The next day you feel good. It's not really a service you need to pay for though.
Owned forgot one important thing. Gua sha needs to be done on lubricated skin. Tiger balm, Vick's or Vaseline for those that don't like the tingling sensation of the others. Rub a good bit of the lubricant on the skin before rubbing. Also, do a quick search for a diagram online so you rub the correct way; rub the wrong way and you risk damage to your blood vessels.
If it's your first time, it hurts like hell, since your skin is not used to the scraping. The relief you get from the sickness is like a miracle. The oinment or oil used will lessen the pain. As a kid, I screamed when my mother applied the guasha to me. That's why westerners think it's some kind of physical abuse. The more red the skin surface, means the sicker the person is. The redness usually goes away in a few days.
Well for skinny people like me it hurts sometimes. but its really relaxing (id say its more ticklish!) when I'm sick, I do this before I go to bed and you feel SO much better in the morning. the oinment my mom uses kinda heats you up~
It works just as well and less painful with some lube. Growing up my parents use to us water, but astroglide works the best!

No, it is quite gentle and it feels good. I know it looks like it hurts, but it really does not.

@Chinnyboy91 Hurt depends on what instruments that you use (spoon is the best) and how much force the person is putting into it.

It looks painful, but in fact it's harmless. It actually feels good, like a massage.

But the way you can tell it's bad blood is if the area comes out darker right?
xray538 2 years ago
Does this only work on light skinned people?
xray538 2 years ago 2
The practice originated in China and Southeast Asia, so it's not only for light-skinned white people. :)
