I was in high school and I saved up enough money to buy a stereo during Christmas in August. My mother and I went to the Crazy Eddie on Route 22 in Union NJ, they had the A/C cranked to like 40 degrees, you could see your breath! The workers were in full Santa garb with fake snow blowing around! My mother goes,"I'll be in the car!" I miss that old Sanyo AM/FM radio, with turntable and cassette!! I could listen to WPLJ and tape the good songs.
Holy crap! Remember Crazy Eddie?! They just don't make them like this anymore, do they? Why not? And why are 99% of the commercials today stupid? I swear, I am always saying to my husband when I see a commercial "What idiot advertising company made this crap and what company gave it the OK? Somebody actually got paid for thinking this crap up!"
Crazy Eddie went to prison for some sort of financial deal..May have been taxes. But anyhow, this spokesperson I believe gained some weight, calmed down, and was the Bernie's spokesperson for many years. If I am wrong, please correct me.
I lived in New Jersey in the late '70s and these commercials were everywhere. Sometimes it seemed as if TV was just one long Crazy Eddie commercial interrupted by the occasional show.
I used to work at that same store (the Record & Tape "Asylum") in the late 1970's. I got fired on a trumped up charge just before my benefits were to start, so I share your frustration with the crew.
Is the version of "Joy to the World" Percy Faith's recording, from a 33 1/3 LP played at 45 RPM? The arrangement I seem to remember hearing on "The Yule Log" (at its normal speed), besides its long-running (sped-up) use in these "Christmas in August" ads.
I used to work for the Crazy Eddie Record & Tape Asylum in Union, NJ, and I can tell you in all honesty that the company screwed EVERYBODY! I got fired on a trumped-up charge just before my benefits were to go into effect. After the store had closed for the day, the video department crew made bootleg copies of porn movies on the display VCR's! When the chain closed, I celebrated. When Eddie Antar got busted, I rejoiced.
Eddie Antar was a bad guy! He faked things and got so much money that he didn't know where to put it! The funny part is that he went to Israel and he saw a woman leaning over her car. He said "You got a great butt" and the woman said "You're under arrest!" That was SO unpredictable! I thought no one was gonna catch him!
ha i remember when i had nfl sunday ticket and was watching the west coast games there was some car commercial make fun of philadelphians like we all have mullets and eat chessesteaks and drive around in camarros which is kind of true but i was still kind of shocked
You know, I remember these commercials. AND I LIVE IN SAN ANTONIO!! Back in the early days of cable, we used to get a channel out of New York. It's were I would watch the WWF in the early 80's. I also remember the Carvel commercials.
i live in houston, and I went to San Antonio b4. I went there to downtown san antonio and to Sea World. I had a camp-out there at sea world and it wuz fun!

funny how people comment on things they read about and don't know the whole story...for some of us, I was a kid when these commercials first aired, the memories and the laughter these things brought to the region, can never be forgotten...the fact that the owner of the store went to jail has nothing to do with those memories of the crazy commercials that I can still recite the locations of the stores 30 yrs later. Live and learn jasper153...Peace!
Jerry Carroll was also a former D.J. (air name: Dr. Jerry) for WPIX-FM (now WQCD). Crazy Eddie had sponsored on that radio station at least since the early 1970's, and had other D.J.'s doing the ads before Dr. Jerry came to the station, which was probably how he became their official pitchman.
Wow I remember these. I miss the bargains

Jerry Carrol defined local advertising brilliance in the 1970's and 1980's. These are classic entertainment.

but at 1:10, he distinctly says "cellular phone." (He says portable phone later in the other spot.)
gli7utubeo 3 years ago
They were selling Cellular Phones back in 1986? That's what he said in one of the spots. Wow.
gli7utubeo 3 years ago
He said portable phones. Basically a cordless phone.

I used to be the manager of Crazy Eddie's Record and Tape Asylum in Union NJ, 80 thru 81
They fired me for observing John Lennon's 10 minutes of silence early in 1981. What a crew huh ?

The store was called an asylum? I suppose that's fitting for a person as crazy as Eddie.
