  • Why hide in the opera house!?

  • Young Gerard is really slow to react... "you're walking into the water... oh you're going to kill yourself.. HEY WAIT." ..... "you're drinking a potion... oh you're going to kill our unborn child.. HEY WAIT."

  • so the phantom is the jesus of music lol

  • maybe she wanted to find bikini bottom.

  • That having been said, my thanks to the poster for making this out of print film available online. :-)

  • Sooo...why can the most awesome and super famous opera singer in Paris not go to a hospital again?? Or, you know, rent a crappy room after having an ugly baby? Was this really the FIRST deformed baby EVER??

The entire conceit of this version, making his parents loving and then having to figure out some other way of making him super angsty and effed up, just does not work...it stretches to some pretty ridiculous plot twists in order to get there, and in the end, the pathos is just not the same.

  • I like the Phantoms little nod at 7:39 XD

  • I know now how Erik's face was messed up: the drugs that his mother took. It's kind of sad really: Belladore tried to kill Erik, her own KID!

  • @The1990phantom Sadly, that kind of thing happens far more often than it should...

  • I guess this is one case where you can truly blame the parents for everything. Poor Erik.

  • Erik's dad is such a douche! if i were the mom, i would have tried to drown him instead of myself XD

  • @ToxisGrey, the book is ENTIRELY different from this version of the Phantom of the Opera, you will be shocked when you read it.

  • The suicide-in-the-Seine scene. Makes you think how easy it is for a suicidal person to drown themselves on the Seine river in Paris. People walking by have easy access to the water and can either walk into it the waters or jump from the many old bridges above the river. Scary thought. It's probably actually happened over the years.

  • I haven't read the book- yet... But I believe she wanted to know if Gerard still cared about her enough to not want her dead. Why else would she attempt to drown herself so close to him and clearly in his line of sight. If he had said a single word to her, though, I believe she wouldn't have tried it...

  • worst. dad. everrrrr

  • Is the little kid Erik wearing red and gray facepaint-- that's supposed to be the disfiguration?!

  • @OvaltineEucerin no it's a mask

  • @BloodyBlackPrincess

Yes! Thank you! I think you're right! It makes sense now! Not even on the small child are we allowed to see Erik's actual face. Upon reflection, if this is a "mask" it looks similar to the red/white mask Richard White would wear in the stage version. Very cool cross-over from one medium to the other. Thanks for the insight!

  • I asume the stuff she drank was some sort of abortion juice??

Which was obviously taken to late in the pregnancy and caused a contraction and the baby to be born premature.

Poor Erik and his idiot parents...

  • this is a very good version of the phantom of the opera.

  • Was it that potion thing that caused the baby to be deformed?

  • @thatappletree i tihnk that potion was something like poision.... perharps it had to be all drinken to make the baby die, so perhaps it was that, that made him deformed?

  • Gerard: Don't drink that, your baby will have some sort of deformation!

    - 5 min later -

Gerard: OMG our baby has birth defects! Ewwww-

Belladova: But dear, you saw this coming.

Gerard: Oh. I'm not sure where this leaves us...

    Belladova: x_x

    Gerard: Well crap!

  • what did she drink when she gave that woman the money?

  • Jeez, Erik's dad is super horny. Knocks up one chic, marries her, becomes lovers with another and gets her pregnant.

  • Erik got his genius from his mother apparently because his dad's like "hum I'm just gonna keep fishing while I watch my lover walk towards the water obviously depressed, I'm sure she won't kill herself"....not to mention the fact that he put an innocent girl in his messed up situation by lying......don't screw unless you know you can take care of the kid....and then he has the gall to act shocked that she wanted to abort and not live in poverty (pregnant women couldn't get jobs then)

  • The young Carriere looks like Peter Scolari. Since it is a flashback he doesn't speak, since it would not be the same voice.

  • Poor little Erik....His stupid mother couldn't leave well enough alone, had to go and try and kill herself! That's why poor Erik looks like he does...

  • Why doesn't he ever speak, it's just weird. Paying him for a few lines couldn't have been that much.

  • You're right. And there's nothing going on in his eyes, no face expression of some kind.

What that the perchman they dressed up at the last minute when actor couldn't make???

  • Gerard is SUCH an ass! >:(

  • I think this is the first time they ever say his real name.

  • Where did the dog come from? Oh what...isn't this an Opera House? Oh well.

  • 0:50 I'm sorry but... who does that!? And humans float!... What a horrible father DX I wonder if his mother's suicide attempts are what caused him to get deformed... It's weird that she loved him despite trying to kill him and herself multiple times.

  • @PinkCharmander It was actually that thing she drank from the gypsy, which made her pregnant.

  • @miep8675 um no the man was what made her pregnant hon, potions don't do that ;) but the potion, if it was an abortion potion like it probably was, could have cause major birth defects etc.

  • His mom was so lovely! :)

  • How come no-one else noticed that there was a woman doing the creepiest suicide ever? In broad daylight?

    Poor Erik.

  • Her just walking into the water is CREEPY... I can see were Erik got his lunacy from.

  • Okay, broad daylight in th emiddle of Paris = not the best place to try to commit suicide...

  • Poor Erik... :(

  • this is my all time favorite version. thank you so much for posting this.

  • i love this version

  • well...i do have to admit....i love the musical to!!!!

but i like this very much tooo!:)

  • love this version! :D

btw, theres just one bit that I don't understand, and that is why Gerard didn't look after Erik apove ground? Sure Erik may have been deformed, but was that a big enough reason in those days? Just wondering...

  • I'm not sure. I think its depending on how bad the deformity was. Except, we never get to see it in this...

  • hmm yeh that's true

  • It doesn't make much sense, lol. If I were him I would have raised him like a good parent, above ground, and told him Ioved him no matter what... but hey, it makes a good story. XD

  • @zannaallen I believe that that sort of deformation WAS unacceptable in France in those days. Poor, poor Erik.

  • In my opinion this is the best version ever....

  • I really enjoy this version.

  • Oh my gosh. This is the saddest story I've ever heard! I mean, not that it wasn't the same kind of story in the other movie, but having it told by the father was just heart breaking!

I like how they tell the story in this movie better. And I like the singers better too.... VERY talented :-)

Thank you so so SO much for posting this!!!

  • I LoB' This movie!!! tank U

  • Me too!
