This was one of the most unusual and entertaining of films ! -- Nice to know there's some others who can appreciate its speacialness too ! -- Thanks for the pleasure !
@bustyristy Yes, he did. This is not a clip from a movie or something, it's actual stand-up comedy. De Niro: actor, director, stand-up comedian, neurosurgeon, and pastry chef. You owe him awe.
@theBadloves I think It's implied they were being told to laugh, as if scorsese was saying that, when it comes to television, real talent is not necessary.
@elbethere so you saying that the jokes weren't good? i think they were quite good, especially considering they are almost 30 years old.. and jokes, like people, can easily age.. but then, they had to be good: cause the whole movie in a way builds up to this final scene.. without a strong stand-up, the whole story wouldn't make sense, or at least it'd get a much darker meaning
@LapoSettepanze I'm saying I've heard better jokes, and that these were not up to par with some of the funnyman of the time. They are material fit for open mic nights or small venues. Not late night tv. They were not "ha ha funny" to quote goodfellas.
@LapoSettepanze the whole point of the film is that he's a shallow chancer, he's not some genius. True, he's not a total trainwreck up there but he is a dull hack. It's not building up to a strong stand-up set, its building up to a reveal of exactly how self-deluded the character is

One of my fav movies....although it was a little unrealistic that anyone would laugh at Rupid's jokes!
