  • Joni was the greatest. Smoking killed her voice eventually but, before that, she lost her tune, as in this song. At least the poetry stayed.

  • ...and the persuasions had the tightest 5-part harmony ever. frank zappa heard them sing over the phone and produced their first album in 1970.

  • she particularly asked the persuasions to back her up on this song. it was her arrangement and it's a classic.

  • wonderful!

  • Joni is at least as tall as most of these guys.

  • Really? I think they sound good together.

  • Fantastic version! Thanks for posting.

  • Joni's voice is magical but i don't like the brothers backing. Doesn't go with the ethereal quality of the song.

  • Agreed luke. Particularly the guy nearest to Joni. His voice is too strong in the mix.

    Who mixed this take?

He got it wrong in my humble opinion.

  • ethereal yes, but there's a gospel music inspiration there for sure. I like it but I like hearing different versions of songs.

  • This is from one of Joni's greatest and most unheralded albums, THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS. I love this performance from one of her greatest live concerts!

  • Wow ! The whole song and arrangement are great but what she sings after Lyle's part is magic. The amen cadence always works.

  • This is my favorite song she does. The music and lyrics are amazing.

  • I envy you lektrikwire ..:)) I was 6 years old then:)

  • I was at tis concert for my birthday, thanks to my kind wife who knew the perfect gift for me. This was magic.

  • I guess I don't have to tell you either that you should keep your wife close [my respects to her ;-) ] or how jalous I am of *any*body who attended this mythical concert.

Hail to queen Joni and her magic friends (among whom my own little God Pat Metheny.)

*Thank God* this was made into an album: it became the most precious of companions a long time ago, in my teens, far, far away :D

    Cheers!

  • Joni can say it like it is...a wonderful song...love her!

  • Shadows and Light is Joni Mitchell's 1980 double live album, recorded at the Santa Barbara County Bowl in September 1979 on the Mingus tour. The concert was also released on VHS and DVD

  • One of Jerry Lawson's favorite tours
