We have the potential to reach 100% renewable energy in the US, problem is that so many Americans are still disillusioned that renewable energy will never be as cheep and affordable as coal and oil.
Out in Brazil, Wind is cheeper then natural gas. According to the National Electric Power Agency, their wind power cost are US 61.9$/Mwh while natural Gas is 64.17$/Mwh.
Politicians love to downtalk renewables in the US.
But Renewables are the way to a cleaner sustainable future.
@SereneiBE Wind is already about as cheap as coal in the US although more expensive than gas. Comparing it with oil doesn't really makes sense, since oil is for transportation, not for electricity generation. Making electricity to feed the grid with oil at current price would be silly expensive.
There are two major problems preventing electric cars from becoming mainstream
1) Short range ( a serious but not insurmountable technological problem)
2) High price (as expected from any new technology)
These problems need to be addressed separately. Now I agree that if the grid is fed with cleaner and renewable energy like wind, it will add a very good reason to fix it. I hope it happens soon.
We have someone up near Gaylord Michigan which I know of 2.. of these type wind turbines.. they were both working real well but I noticed lately that both of them are broken or something, on a windy day both were not working..

Funny - after an earthquake or tsunami, I don't hear or see on the news BILLIONS of dollars being spent to clean up a busted wind farm and endless babysitting of non-existent "wind power waste". I wonder why that is.
@mphello Are you serious? "big-government-loving nukeheads?" Funny, I keep seeing and hearing those that are for nuclear energy being anti-big government and not exactly loving nuclear power but understanding it's cleaner than coal. I am personally a libertarian and if you think I'm a supporter of big government then you have no idea what it means to be libertarian. In fact, I'm moving next spring and hope to net meter my house with two wind turbines and a solar system. My F U to the utilities.
@goose2goose2 who gives a shit about mentally challenged birds that can't seem to understand that flying into something spinning would cause them harm.
Why didn't they think of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines first? Think of all the dead birds and bats it would have spared, and the space they take up is less, so you can have more of them in the same area and generate more electricity too!
@Arthurkitchen What an ignorant ass you are clownboy! It's a wonder something so head-up-ass as yourself can use the PC, much less educate us about science. My god man, you can barely write!
Purchase your own wind turbine kit or parts for your Sovereign independence. Don't be a slave to the electric companies. 1500 Watt all inclusive turbine kit for about $1,500. Go Soveriegn! We have everything from charge controllers to Inverters. visit Sovereign's Depot @ sovdepot.com
@RonanG There is no debate you idiot. Losers hate coal and oil and those that know don't! There is NOTHING that humans can do to destroy the earth NOR slow anything down that is happening. Get a life!
@arthurkitchen Judging from your intellectual prowess I can see why you think that. Just because evolution hasn't been kind to you doesn't mean you have to destroy the earth. Are you a member of 'Densa'?
@Knossos22 No, I have a PhD in Physics. The dumbest thing one can do is buy a Prius or the like. Enviro-Morons actually want high fuel taxes so that humans will buy these ignorant cars and suffer! No thanks! I drive sports cars for a reason and drive them hard. I can afford it so live life to it's fullest, not worry about trees and things you have NO POWER TO CHANGE!
First you attempt to employ argument from authority. Then you change the subject. Then you go on to a political agenda: "things you have NO POWER TO CHANGE!" This is another logical fallacy, as every change in history was preceded by someone who decided to cause change.
You read like a paid shill... Do you work for a big oil company, or what?
Dear Mr. "I drive sports cars for a reason and drive them hard." PhD in Physics dude,
Sorry, but you are just so full of crap!
Why are you here? Why are you not out driving your sports car hard? You mean being here arguing with "Enviro-Morons" is something you do because you "can afford it?" And this is "live(ing) life to it's fullest...?" Do you have a big red nose and fuzzy hair on each side of your head by chance?
That's it? From a PhD? Come on smart guy, you can do better than that! Seriously Mr. physics PhD, you claim to have this amazing life, but you hang around here picking fights? For what reason?
@Knossos22 Who do you think you are fooling? Do you really think you can compete with me on any level? Seriously? Go talk to someone else on your level, such as those in the Sierra club!
You have a real ego problem don't you? Anyway, I knew you would evade the question. What are you afraid of? Again, why are you here? You have a PhD, but seem to have a problem answering a simple question...
So far you have only given more reason to believe you are just a paid shill. Keep it up, everyone here will end up thinking you work for the Koch brothers, or something.
Don't loose sleep, I have no interest in your competition view of life. And for sure, there is no point in competing with a turd-blossom. Just curious why you would waste time here when you could be out hard driving your "sports cars" and showing off your PhD?
@Knossos22 You see, that is the funny part. Why would anyone with a brain care what an enviro-loser like you thinks of them? You and your kind are the meek, the worthless. What was your question? Why am I here? To push your buttons and get you all worked up and as all can see, it was quite easy. You know what, I am only 15 so, uh, no PhD or even a car at all. What a tool you are and so very gullible!
very good sr ..but could be good idea to don't broadcast the info via 2.4 ghz or wirelees and use some other way to access the info about the power ..we know amps and voltage is easy ..but normal user don't need more info ..only if the power is in the inverter or the power is full in the back.up batterys system. think about the bees and insects is good too. tnks
My husband and I rode our bicycles by the house in the video, out in Washoe Valley! It is a quiet wind turbine! I want one of these but it will take too long to pay off. Hey! I have a good idea... Come out and make my house a test!!!
Think of all the power that could be generated if there was a small one for the top of each telephone pole.... You wouldn't even need any power plants! As long as there's wind, that is.
@Roboallen9 I like your idea, a power grid with no power plant! If indeed just one of these things can put out 25-30% of a house holds needs then an entire grid would seem phenomenal. Especially if you had 4-6 of these turbines on your own property. Larger ones for large buildings and atp. complexes. It would seem that there would even be a surplus of power. If that is so, use the surplus power to make the telephone poles from metal and cut back our use of trees. (save wood for toilet paper)
@Pynaegan Are you serious? wow what a lame life you must lead! The best use of a tree is a coffee table and the best power is from a coal plant. Live your life and stop being such a wuss!
@Celebrindan Windows, trucks, planes and pollution do, and on a far larger scale. Burning coal releases mercury and selenium, commonly found in coal seams, into the air and water. I'll put the kills to predatory birds per kilowatt of coal energy up against the equivalent in wind any day.
@Celebrindan That's fair. Really, the solution is to get the turbines away from the birds. We need to put utility scale generators in places where birds aren't common, like offshore and at high altitudes - there's some great work being done with self-supporting tethered gliders as generators. As for wind power on your own property, which is located wherever it happens to be, that's a trickier problem.
@nekbiodieselworks actually, a HOUSEcat doesn't kill any birds, unless they're also pet birds. The indoor/outdoor cat would be the cat you're thinking about.
@nek0s Your comment needs a citation or link to a report of this other technology. Making vague references only seeks to further the rumor mill that is the internet. Either you fabricated your claim, or you can prove it. I leave it to you to post proof, that we all may learn.
Yea, tell them to use the same clear cut areas where giant power lines already exist... Put the wind towers in those spaces, up above trees there is more wind / Use the power line towers for support...come on let's recycle!!... maybe?
Yea, tell them to use the same clear cut areas where giant power lines already exist... Put the wind towers in those spaces, up above trees there is more wind / Use the power line towers for support...come on let's recycle!!... maybe?
very good .... maybe consider stacking them on top of each other....think serving more people...narrow strips of land ..hmm.. that sounds like where power tower lines are located..they can be replaced....maybe these things can fit within them...hmmm
@BionicSniper Yuo are a "GENIUS!".The rotor is made of fibre-glas or carbon +resin(all stelth materials). And if there is a effect on global winds ;we put them up in the tornado-alley to keep away Katria and her bad sisters.
Paper companies aren't allowed to cut trees to make paper in some areas. However the same government allows clear cutting of those same areas to build windmills.
Western environmentalists look at wind turbines and get to feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Most of them don't have to look at them ALL THE TIME, mind you... and they also don't have to look at the lakes of toxic sludge produced by the process of mining for the rare-earth metals vital to creating these turbines, or the blighted farms and forests around them. There's an active protest movement in China (where 95% of these metals are mined) because these rare-earth mines are poisoning their fields.

The permanent magnets in a three-megawatt wind turbine require three tons of Neodymium. The battery in a Toyota Prius requires over 22 pounds of Lanthanum. In addition to mercury, the "hazmat" bulbs we're all being prodded into using require Terbium. All of these come from China, because their lack of environmental standards make it cheaper for them to mine them.
Definitely, wind turbines is considered by many as interesting features. It contributes to landscape and scenery. It's a good idea that technology welcomes a new state of the art design of wind turbines. While exhibiting it's nice structure, it greatly contributes in saving energy. Indeed, it serves a two fold purpose.
The Be Jesus windmill is much better,In both horizontal and vertical, it uses a pure form of newtons laws being 100% closed walls and open closed walls of any size instantly. There mathematically can not be better.only improved with additional forces applied.in currents wind / water
want to have more electricity generated ? i have an idea that with this same vertical turbine more electricity can be generated email me at soapshouse@yahoo.com or let me know here
A row of turbines of this size could fit neatly along narrow sections of unused land in urban areas such as highway and parking lot medians and at edges of open fields. They are short enough that most cherry picker trucks can be used to service them.
@RandomConcepts sorry to say but in scotland where i stay we are not really famed for sunny days however we do have plenty wind. i am at this moment building a turbine quite similar to the one shown here and research has shown this is the way forward.
Anti wind groups? Are backers of the tea party? Sounds to me like your a nut case ready for the rubber room. I swear the non sense from some people is just non sense.
@OverTaxed42Long He actually knows what he is talking about, Greenpeace is suing Bill Koch because of his lobbying against wind power. Maybe take 30 seconds to look stuff up on Google before you start slinging insults at people.
Wow. this is a pretty neat design. :) Would want to have that near our town. You should add your link at WindTurbines(dot)net. It's a new social network for wind energy enthusiasts. :)
@RandomConcepts We can reduce the visual impact by painting them but I do agree some areas should be left alone. And it's not possible to be more specific about who is "anti-wind" because they are collectives with different reasons / agendas. Some have health claims, others about intermittency, etc.
If global warming is the only reason for people to stop poluting and waisting, I hope you remain in your beliefs but the only way to reign in corporate polutors/waisters is to beat them with the fact that it is financially in our best interests to do our parts. And take that power away from the politians by becoming as individuals energy and food independant on them so we can stop feeding the beasts with our purchase and tax money! BTW I don't have the wind but want one of those whirly gigs!
@huntncomfort And take that power away from the politians: I think you meant the power companies more than government/politicians.. I think you need to get your facts straight.. Most of the money to pay for electricity goes to the power companies, installers, etc. A smaller chunk goes into taxes. Furthermore some of those power companies provide clean energy. Now go waste your money and go buy one of those whirly gigs.
@luc59457 True Dat Luc!!!. it would be a threat to the power corporations "Profit's". and u have not even touched on it being a threat to the "OIL" corporations Profits, that being said is why it will Never be Allowed to work in america.
@huntncomfort If Concentrated solar was made practical for personal use and was marketed, you probably could have saved thousands of dollars to get the same results.
@luc59457 The price of solar has come down by considerably $8-$12 watt to $3-$8 per watt. I have not purchased a whirly gig even though I want one and have purchased solar. $14k initial investment - 30% off the total fed - 50%off the total state = only 20cents on the dollar final out of pocket on an already discounted system. You are correct as far as power company vs politians, any credits I accumulate will not be paid to me until I close the account, they keep the interest accumulated.
@luc59457 I purchased my systems from Sun Electronics in Miami, they shipped via freight truck which left the pallets in my driveway. I did the installation myself which was goofy because the state and Fed incentives also pay 80% of the installation costs (in La.). They look at the whole project. I should have looked at what my time was worth to myself. If I lived in an area that had better avg. wind speeds having both is the way to go. Usually when it's cloudy, it's windy.
And as far as land for crops, the corn intended for beef production can be used for ethanol first extracting the starches/sugars leaving the original crude protein from the corn which is what the cows need from it, as the animal protein added by the dead yeast which is what goes on inside the cows many stomachs anyway. The existing yeast in the cow's stomach breaks down the cellulose for it's food leaving the crude protein and then making the ultimate sacrifice by becoming the cow's protein.
@huntncomfort $3,5 is put in every letre of bio-ethanol ....TAX MONEY!!!! just to suport the alcohol indusrti/farmes.So who is wasting his money?? btw ,u r no cattle farmer, that is for shure.
@yutjub123 I have 4.4kw solar on top of my house and grow my own fruits and vegitables and from my channel profile you can see I am not a cattle farmer...but I am doing something, what about you...mouth!
@yutjub123 electricity contains less than 40% of the energy of the coal used to make it.) For every unit of energy delivered at the pump, corn ethanol requires 0.76 units of fossil energy, and gasoline requires 1.22 units. The use of ethanol thus results in the consumption of 40% less fossil energy than the gasoline it replaces.
I work for an oil co. (lowly wage earner machinist) but still precision in numbers is why I moved back out of the global warming group but still as a conservationist and a cheap bastard I have 4400 watts of solar with oversized grid tie inverters to allow me to expand to 8 kw for my home. This is on the existing footprint of my home so no new land usage. Also plans for plug in hybrid to use totally as elect car on short trips. numbers still good for renewables even if the earth isn't warming.
No single source of electricity is going to meet all our needs. Diversification is just as important in our energy portfolio as it is in our financial portfolio. Funny how conventional industry shills conveniently ignore how Coal, Oil, Nuclear and even Natural Gas contribute to the poisoning of our environment. They even seem it ignore the hundreds of thousands of birds and other animals that were killed by Chernobyl, acid rain and habitat destruction.
Wind power is a clean renewable source of energy. It’s the fastest growing energy sector and has huge potential due to the increasing demand of energy. The biggest advantage of wind energy is that it does not pollute the environment like fossil fuels do and thus is becoming one of the most popular sources of alternate energy. Transformer Company, Pacific Crest Transformers works with the renewable energy sector. It offers various products and solutions to the wind energy sector.
One WIndmill on average produces 1-5MW. Its also not a steady source and varies. One Coal or Nuclear Plant can produce around 1000 MW with some Nuclear Plants having more then one reactor. I don`t see how in the world you can replace the hundreds of Coal fired power plants with that many wind turbines.
How much land does a wind turbine take? How much land is required to replace just 1 coal fired power plant? How can you insure no blackouts or brownouts?
@Allante715 Wind will never be the complete answer and its variability can be tempered when backed by storage. It would have been much better if 5-10% of a wind farm's install budget had been put towards some kind of storage system. For small farms, that might be 1 less turbine up to a handful for larger ones. Turbine land use is hard to quantify as the bigger the turbine, the more widely spaced - most of the land is still usable for grazing or crops
@Allante715 You can ensure no blackouts with a good storage system and areas where winds are relatively constant most of the time such as some high altitudes and some coastal areas. I wouldn't say replace coal with just wind.. Wind is not the only thing. But it has good potential and good efficiency in the right areas. With a combination of wind, concentrated solar, geothermal, CNG (methane) and Nuclear, we can someday replace all the coal power.
Free energy has been here for a while ,But some very powerfull ppl don't want you and me to be free from energy costs,Get the blueprints for a free energy motor at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Let the revolution begin!
How Symbolic! Our national bird, The Eagle is stopping the Robot Turbines. These very ungreen (taking all the available ground water in rural communities to build their foundations) turbines, are a blight on the landscape that can be seen for miles with their blinking Red Robot Eyes at night. Stop the Robot Take Over!!
look at that UGLY bilght ! wow just go to palm spring or mojave and look at the beautiful BLIGHTED land ! we need nuclear not this JUNK ! if the wind dont blow you aint got no power ! bet this shit is made in CHINA ! just think if all this wind crap goes foward all you will see is windmilss everywhere ! i hope they all getr runaway props and fall over ! BLIGHT !
I live in a valley so the people that sell them said they would not turn unless I attached a electric motor to it, so yes people in valley's can also be fashonable to.
head for windmill which do work as aerogenerator- e.g. not via resistance but more via ascending force of an aerodynamic profile - its much more efficient.
I believe the design is unique and provides less of an eye sore for any human being. The idea of it being developed from Egyptian times makes it that more interesting. Yes, birds die everyday...they die by diving into windows at their own costs...does that mean we have to place trashbags over windows so they see them? My gosh. Some people are oblivious to the ideas of moving away from fossil fuels while our environment is trying to sustain the endless usage of them.
For a recent talk about what's being done or planned to improve the reliability and availability of renewable energy, check out Stanford University YouTube page for /watch?v=fL84kpUuIHw
These are colossal failures at producing electricity. If any of you bother to read, or have mommy or daddy read to you, news stories about the companies that make these monstrosities. Those companies are going broke and have shut down. The TRUTH is that the turbines (1) take up waaaay too fricking much tillable farm land, so the farmers are going broke, even more so than usual, (2) the power produced is so inefficient that they can only power around 100 houses at best, and (3) they kill birds!!
@Glinkaism1 I've spent a considerable amount of time reading what both sides have to say. All forms of electricity production have or have had problems - wind's no different and its issues are not a disaster or not insurmountable.
And your points on farming and bird killing are complete bullshit - and if YOU did any reading, you'd know it. You may have issues with the biz practices of some of the companies but that's a regulatory issue, not a tech one
@Glinkaism1 Those nasty pieces of vitriol you posted on my profile was uncalled for, but, in light of the number of disturbed individuals in society, and the distinct possibility that you may be off your meds for good reason, I'll overlook it this time.
That aside, I've addressed the issue of bird-kill several times in this discussion - go read the 2005 report from US Fish Wildlife.
We don't have a GENERATION problem in this country. We have a STORAGE and TRANSMISSION problem. We desperately need new (lighter) methods to store electrical potential, and lower resistance transmission (wires) systems.

@mojoeshaw And I am personally a Green, and I vote Socialist and Communist some times.
Every law, including laws that make it a crime for people to stop polluters or animal torturers in factory farms, is, by definition, big government.
If someone makes a law that prevents me from having free speech, then I'll make a law limiting how much property they can own.
Governments (i.e. taxpayers) completely subsidize nuclear power and pay for their cleanup.
What part of that don't you get?

"PhD"? Are you an educated idiot?
First you attempt to employ argument from authority. Then you change the subject. Then you go on to a political agenda: "things you have NO POWER TO CHANGE!" This is another logical fallacy, as every change in history was preceded by someone who decided to cause change.

PersonalSecurityZone 9 months ago
Think of all the power that could be generated if there was a small one for the top of each telephone pole.... You wouldn't even need any power plants! As long as there's wind, that is.
Roboallen9 9 months ago
@Roboallen9 I like your idea, a power grid with no power plant! If indeed just one of these things can put out 25-30% of a house holds needs then an entire grid would seem phenomenal. Especially if you had 4-6 of these turbines on your own property. Larger ones for large buildings and atp. complexes. It would seem that there would even be a surplus of power. If that is so, use the surplus power to make the telephone poles from metal and cut back our use of trees. (save wood for toilet paper)

nekbiodieselworks 10 months ago 45
@nekbiodieselworks
House cats don't kill hawks, falcons, owls and eagles.
Celebrindan 8 months ago 2
@Celebrindan Windows, trucks, planes and pollution do, and on a far larger scale. Burning coal releases mercury and selenium, commonly found in coal seams, into the air and water. I'll put the kills to predatory birds per kilowatt of coal energy up against the equivalent in wind any day.
AlRoderick 8 months ago
@AlRoderick
I was only trying to illustrate that the bird kills the folks here are worried about are not sparrows and pidgins.
I am for both, wind power, and addressing the bird kill issue.
Celebrindan 8 months ago
@Celebrindan That's fair. Really, the solution is to get the turbines away from the birds. We need to put utility scale generators in places where birds aren't common, like offshore and at high altitudes - there's some great work being done with self-supporting tethered gliders as generators. As for wind power on your own property, which is located wherever it happens to be, that's a trickier problem.
AlRoderick 8 months ago
@nekbiodieselworks
it's true, cats are big time bird killers..

BTW I don't have the wind but want one of those whirly gigs!
huntncomfort 1 year ago
@huntncomfort And take that power away from the politians: I think you meant the power companies more than government/politicians.. I think you need to get your facts straight.. Most of the money to pay for electricity goes to the power companies, installers, etc. A smaller chunk goes into taxes. Furthermore some of those power companies provide clean energy. Now go waste your money and go buy one of those whirly gigs.

@huntncomfort If Concentrated solar was made practical for personal use and was marketed, you probably could have saved thousands of dollars to get the same results.
luc59457 1 year ago
@luc59457 The price of solar has come down by considerably $8-$12 watt to $3-$8 per watt. I have not purchased a whirly gig even though I want one and have purchased solar. $14k initial investment - 30% off the total fed - 50%off the total state = only 20cents on the dollar final out of pocket on an already discounted system. You are correct as far as power company vs politians, any credits I accumulate will not be paid to me until I close the account, they keep the interest accumulated.
huntncomfort 1 year ago
@huntncomfort That's still above 2000$ in taxes. Did you have it shipped?
luc59457 1 year ago

@pacificcresttrans
Allante715 1 year ago 2
@Allante715 Wind will never be the complete answer and its variability can be tempered when backed by storage. It would have been much better if 5-10% of a wind farm's install budget had been put towards some kind of storage system. For small farms, that might be 1 less turbine up to a handful for larger ones. Turbine land use is hard to quantify as the bigger the turbine, the more widely spaced - most of the land is still usable for grazing or crops
bannor99 1 year ago
@bannor99
Completely agree. More a comment to people who think that Solar and Wind can completely replace Coal. Wind is great as a supplement.
Allante715 1 year ago
@Allante715 You can ensure no blackouts with a good storage system and areas where winds are relatively constant most of the time such as some high altitudes and some coastal areas. I wouldn't say replace coal with just wind.. Wind is not the only thing. But it has good potential and good efficiency in the right areas. With a combination of wind, concentrated solar, geothermal, CNG (methane) and Nuclear, we can someday replace all the coal power.

Yes, birds die everyday...they die by diving into windows at their own costs...does that mean we have to place trashbags over windows so they see them? My gosh. Some people are oblivious to the ideas of moving away from fossil fuels while our environment is trying to sustain the endless usage of them.

Glinkaism1 1 year ago
@Glinkaism1 I've spent a considerable amount of time reading what both sides have to say. All forms of electricity production have or have had problems - wind's no different and its issues are not a disaster or not insurmountable.
And your points on farming and bird killing are complete bullshit - and if YOU did any reading, you'd know it. You may have issues with the biz practices of some of the companies but that's a regulatory issue, not a tech one
bannor99 1 year ago
@Glinkaism1 Those nasty pieces of vitriol you posted on my profile was uncalled for, but, in light of the number of disturbed individuals in society, and the distinct possibility that you may be off your meds for good reason, I'll overlook it this time.
