Amazing that I passed much of my listening life totally disinterested in the bassoon now that Maestro Azzolini has come to my ears. Maybe that was because instruments like the bassoon reached the apogee in their evolution to express color and interest in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Later on instruments were made smoother, rounder, and louder- but at the cost of personality. But more importantly Azzolini has a cripness of texture and immediacy of attack that is quite irresistable!
@Totma11 It is never too late to discover something you love... You could in fact think about it as a good thing, because surprises like this are marvelous. Imagine if you discovered everything that you like several years ago... Your present life would be boring and uninsteresting =)
