I know I make no common sense with that purely autist statement, but while listening to this song, the fear and insanity I could perceive in Peter's voice made me think of Old Snake from MGS4, lying there, begging for a quick and painless death as he agonized... A very shocking melody indeed! If I ever make a tribute, it will be Old Snake with THIS song.
Look, I'm a big big fan of Radiohead. I just love them. But I like this version too, and not because it's better than the original or all of that crap, but because it has FEELING in it and it seem really fragile.
God, can't you see that and heard the song and stop complaining already?
I agree it doesn't compare to the Radiohead original which is wonderful...but I love this version. It really gets over the frailty and fear I think and I love the qualities in Gabriel's voice. I don't feel it is meant to be a 'perfect' rendition. But I guess you either like it or you don't...
I don't think this is a bad cover at all. The 'fade out' of the title is made evocative by the vocal. The whispering, sung and then spoken, voice is all part of the overall vocal fragiltiy present throughout the album...I'd say this song ties the whole album together and the falseto is well within in the mood of the piece.
Im a big fan of both Gabriel and Radiohead, but I dont worship them. US is half good-half copy of SO, the best songs are comming from Passion. And radiohead started lik mane other hip indie bands, with tons of angst. Yeah deal with It
But since ok computer till rainbows ther is some kind of progresion. Why Gabriel chose to cover a so-so song, when Radiohead would move off of the "sadness" cliche on other albums. As a short concept piece between songs this fits good in the album
perhaps you should better listen The Dark Side Of The Moon, or Nursery Cryme bro, Im fan of them three: Floyd, Genesis and Radiohead, and I dont think one is better than the other but the fact is that both Genesis and Pink Floyd are on a higher level than Radiohead, besides, there are a lot of elements Radiohead ripped off from Floyd, but then my friend you could not know that if you dont know the three bands right ?, as well you should not talk if you dont know what you are talking about
@BigTymerPimp I would respond, but since you think anyone that disagrees with you is just blah blah blahing, you're just as bad as the people you're talking about.
Regardless of whether or not this is a good cover, I still think it was horrible for Thom and the rest of the band refuse to record their cover just because they didn't like Peter's take on their song.
I think a better way to approach these things is, rather than comparing it to the original etc, simply listening to it as a piece of music and being open to what it is conveying. I'll admit that when I first heard this some time ago it didn't really grab me, but I really got into it just now.
Seriously, grow up guys. If you don't like the song, then move on. Peter Gabriel is a amazing musician and has done loads for music. This is just his interpretation of the original.
I am suprised by how many of you think your opinion matters. I think the original is a good song, but that doesn't make Peter's version bad. I believe Peter's version sounds like it could be used in a theater production. A main character in a woeful voice singing a haunting tune. Reminds me of Japanese koto songs.
@BigTymerPimp It's just as surprising that you think your opinion about other people's opinions in some way matters. If you like it, great. That doesn't diminish the fact that some people don't.
My opinion is not biased. I like both versions. I just don't see why everyone can't move along if they don't like it and not insult someone for attempting to go out of the box when that's why bands like Radiohead exist. It's not a question of why don't you like it. People liking it and not liking it is expected. It's a question of why do you have to hate it?
So while listening through this album I thought "wow, this is pretty awesome stuff"; then I got to this song...
Much like Vampire Weekend's complete butchering of Exit Music, people should just let Radiohead continue being amazing and stop trying to cover their music and instead murder it...
whilst this cover isn't quite my style, i'd rather hear an artist try a different interpretation of a song, then try and do it in a similar way to the original. at least this is interesting
This is not the exact same of the original, so it's not what i expect to hear when I read *insert song title here*, so this cover is awful and terrible and unsustainable.
Signed, any fanboy about any cover of any artist by any other artist.
it's not terrible. Just a little bit ridiculous. It's like he's tried to change everything about the song and while i appreciate that he tried to do something different with the song rather than just regurgitating it out with a different voice, this song is just boring and ridiculous, but not unlistenable.
im a huge radiohead fan and i personally liked this cover a lot. i think people are missing the point, peter isnt trying to regurgitate the original; hes bringing out the vulnerability and mortality, as well as the beauty of the song. and at that, i say he succeeds
The first couple times that I listened to this song I absolutely, positively HATED it. I gave it some time, and it grew on me, and now it's one of my favorites on the whole album.
Apparently, Radiohead were planning to record a cover of Peter Gabriel's song "Wallflower" but disliked this version of their song so much that they have decided to withdraw from the song-swap project!
This song seems to embrace the dark message of the lyrics (believe me Gabriel does not have to struggle through the parts he does struggle through..that is intentional) while the Radiohead version celebrates man's rage against the dying of the light (vocally, rhythmically). That's why I don't like this version as much. Musically it's quite good. It's theatrical...c'mon, it's Peter Gabriel. What else would you expect?
As much as I love Peter Gabriel (and that's *very much*, believe me) and appreciate Scratch My Back, I think this cover is just bloody awful and utterly unlistenable.
It was a little bit better live, and that was fortunate because you don't have the skip button at concerts - and the song was too short to go for a beer.
I think Peter is creative enough to delight us with an original own piece of work ... I am 40 years old now and have been following Peter since I was a child. Let us agree he is a genious and cheer he is back on the road again. Thanks Peter for filling in our souls with joy.

Good stuff. I don't hear anything "terrible". I'm sure Gabriel put so much effort and passion into to this song just to impress Thom that it is audibly visible.
at first i thought what rubbish, but this is quite touching, and surely a legitimate cover. This has really been rethought. Cheers Peter! Cheers Thom! :D

mmm it's really ahrd for me to judge Radiohead covers, cos every time I hear one it just makes me want to listen to the original.
Taken on it's own though, it's a bit slow and orchestral for my tastes. Peter is an amazingly talented man, but this particular song didn't grab me.
