I totally understand what you are saying and I believe it is true in some cases. But when I was visiting some Tibetan area in West China, I have seen lots of shops display Dalai Lama's picture right in center at the entrance of their shops, me and all the other tourists from China and other countries saw those pictures and I am sure police men can see them too, and I am sure they were not hiding those pics and they seem not worried about people seeing them, although none of us talked about it.
I suspect some of those might be put there so tourists can see them. But one thing i know more about is practicing religion, it is restricted, but it's not true you will be imprisoned for practicing it. I used to go to a Christian church in Xi'an, my friend went to a Catholic church regularly in the same city, some friends have home church in Shanghai. I know the churches are being watched by the government, but they didn't harass anyone if you don't do involve politics at church.
My church in Toronto have been sending mission groups to China every year, last year we sent a very large group to help out after the earthquake in may. It is not as free as it is in Canada, but no one had any trouble from the government. If you check some Christian websites, it is estimated that there are 15 to 50 million Christians in China, it would be impossible to put all these people in prison.
There are even some christians in the CCP, but its allowed as long as they respect the distance between politics and beliefs. Only extremists are put in jail, everybody knows christianity has cost humanity the most lives.
However christianity has got a bad image for the people in China lately. Millions of innocent people in the Middle-East are killed by Bush and other christian leaders in the name of their god.

people in the west have a shallow understanding of it. I have some friends who made all kinds of assumptions about China and many turned out to be incorrect once they paid visited China

In China you can be imprisoned for practising your chosen religion or even a meditation! ('Religion is poison' as Mao said!). This is not freedom. This is dictatorship. I totally understand what you are saying and I believe it is true in some cases. But when I was visiting some Tibetan area in West China, I have seen lots of shops display Dalai Lama's picture right in center at the entrance of their shops, me and all the other tourists from China and other countries saw those pictures and I am sure police men can see them too, and I am sure they were not hiding those pics and they seem not worried about people seeing them, although none of us talked about it.

I suspect some of those might be put there so tourists can see them. But one thing i know more about is practicing religion, it is restricted, but it's not true you will be imprisoned for practicing it. I used to go to a Christian church in Xi'an, my friend went to a Catholic church regularly in the same city, some friends have home church in Shanghai. I know the churches are being watched by the government, but they didn't harass anyone if you don't do involve politics at church.

My church in Toronto have been sending mission groups to China every year, last year we sent a very large group to help out after the earthquake in may. It is not as free as it is in Canada, but no one had any trouble from the government. If you check some Christian websites, it is estimated that there are 15 to 50 million Christians in China, it would be impossible to put all these people in prison.

I notice you like to use Mao to interpret China, but you realize Mao said that more than 50 years ago. Cold was is over almost 20 years ago. Things have been changing a lot. I do think Tibetans should have more freedom, but it is these biased and twisted descriptions from the West about China that make things worse, by pushing young Chinese closer to the CCP (not really communism now). There is a lot of work need to be done in Tibet, but nothing can be done without honesty from both side.

The BBC and other British Media were quite fair and unbiased in their reporting of this event which was a disastrous PR mistake for the Chinese Govt. PR Machine!
We saw lots of pictures of the massed red flags but there were just so many more red blue yellow Tibet flags that I almost felt sorry for the Chinese supporters!
We also saw the Chinese Ambassador who was hiding in a side street come running out carrying the torch (very funny).
