@bhushan80 you are right about howrah being big and filthy, it was a truly grand station when it was first built. it's unfortunate that the indian population does not appreciate anything of true grandeur. We are a petty people. well most of us anyway. i still love india
Howrah station is big and filthy. I am from Mumbai and had been there in 2000. And then it had some 23-24 platforms then. It has a huge horizontal yard space too unlike Mumbai CST which now has 18 platforms(7 for suburban trains) but are too congested and the yard space expands vertically away from station. Sealdah also has around 15 (atleast 8 on one side) platforms I guess. Anyone knows? Kolkatta has a good strong rail track network as well. Need ellaboration....Thanks
I think this is your misconception, anyway perception of people may differ, howver presently Howrah station has got a fresh new look and this time if you seem to visit the station , you may end up in a pleasing surprise!!!!!!so welcome to howrah!!!!!Kolkata station is comparitively smaller and newyear and also got a frsh look.
Hey! Thanks for the response. May be ur right. I might want to visit it again. BTW, how many platforms does Howrah have now? And how many does Sealdah (or Kolkatta) have now? Is there a 3rd terminus in and around the city now to fulfill its never ending needs? Mumbai CST and Mumbai Central stations are filthy as compared to some of the other busy junctions. But Kolkata was worst of them all, when I visited it. As u say, it might have changed....
I prefer small stations, more convenient you see! Unlike the regular , predictable, seemingly interminable wait at this stretch regular passengers have to endure.
I tend to disagree. I admit that Howrah station is probably the largest in India and may be busiest w.r.t. the long distance trains. I have visited all the metros, and I can say that Howrah is busy and huge. Also, to add to it, it has probably the longest suburban network adding all the directions ventured. However, I tend to disagree that w.r.t. to the total trains arriving including the suburban crowd and the number of people. Mumbai leads the tally and for a good reason. Read on the nxt rply
Hey, the reason for my assertion is, NDLS has 2-3 stations ...New Delhi, Old Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin whilst Kolkatta has Howrah (24 platforms) and Sealdah (15 platforms). Mumbai has CST (18), Dadar (14), Kurla (16), Bandra (10), etc. as starting points for long distance trains. I really want to know about such decentralization in Howrah and Delhi. More on this in reply that follows...
So, there is certain amount of decentralization of passenger load in Mumbai. I am sure this is the case elsewhere as well. But, Mumbai load is serious. In the peak hours, long distance trains do not mess up with suburban trains. In the morning, only a handful of trains are allowed to enter Mumbai from 6-10. In the evening, only a handful of trains leave Mumbai between 5-9. The long distance trains leaving Mumbai in the morning and coming in have no restrictions...

The south section of SEALDAH STATION (for emu's towards Diamond Harbour, Budgebudge,
Canning, and Namkhana) has 5 platforms numbering 10 to 14. The north section, which
acts as the terminal for local and express trains is the terminal for 3 divisions
(the main division, Bangaon and chord division). The north section has 12 platforms
numbering 1 to 4, 4A, 5 to 9, 9A & 9B.
