It is more efficient to leave a gap of 4 or more between strips because diamond veins span 2 blocks you may miss some but you will get more for less mining :)

MY GOD YOU WERE RIGHT- i watched a vid that told me to branch mine like this right OVER bedrock level, and i kept needing to refill my water bucket because lava kept flowing into the shaft, but now, i just encounter lava pools on the level i am walking on! Those are actually good because i can get rid of my extra cobblestone and gravel

here is an easier way to get to bedrock: make a bunch of ladder and dig straight down putting the ladder down as you go- that will get it done faster
