What film is this from? It's a weird and somewhat annoying scene; there's a lot of to-ing and fro-ing but what exactly are the Templars trying to accomplish? Not to mention the only way I could see Templars chasing through the English countryside like this would be if they went rogue.
@MrsNorris55 It's from an 80's tv series, not a film. You're rather looking at this out of context and would need to see the whole episode for an explanation. The knights were returning to their preceptory in Lincoln when their holy seal was stolen from their banner by a pickpocket. They were in Sherwood looking for the thief when they ran into Robin & his men, thus the attack. It was the first time Robin had come up against trained, superior knights.
@GrandPrix55 Try again. For several centuries the Muslim countries were the centre of learning, at about the same time the West was staggering through the Dark Ages.
@MrsNorris55 This was true, no one has ever said they weren't very intelligent people, but as what seems to have happened, muslim religious fanantics were infiltrating in high places since the Middle Ages and caused the East-West division. That's how the crusades started. Why was it okay for the muslims to pour into Spain and take over for instance, same thing when crusades were called. You don't think the muslims were the originals in Turkey do you? What about Egypt? - Christian country too.
@sonofherne First, I wish we could get these shows on TV here in Canada -- dang.
Second, as to the Muslim takeovers, I don't see it as any different than the Christian takeovers -- or attempted takeovers -- of other lands, usually by fire and sword in those times in an attempt to purge the much older 'heathen' pagan religions. There were raving fanatics on both sides, unfortunately.
That is so, however part of the muslim philosophy is to convert everyone to Islam, whilst at least the christians other than a few sects, are pretty liberal. Look how muslim sects kill each other over what is the same religion, There isn't a christian sect anywhere in the world who stones females to death still just as was done in the Middle Ages.
If you look at the human rights in these countries, you have to give a little respect to the Crusaders & the West, raging barbarians or not.

Though I did like the series, the depiction of templers and "what they did in the Holy Land" was an early form of crapy PC (look what it has done to your country).
Basically muslims were invading, plundering and devastating christian territory since the 7th century (read some articles about the spread of Islam)- killing or enslaving everyone who did stand up against them.
And after some hundereds of years Christians fight a little back - how could they!
Okay Astuga, so why did the Crusaders kill 5000 Jews when they took Jerusalem (by forcing them into the Synagogue then burning it)? And why did they kill Coptic Christians? It wasn't "fighting back" it was a pretty brutal piece of expansionism.
Listen, I don`t say it was a good thing to do. I just say this events had its causes.
And Muslim invaders didn`t act differently when killing the Inhabitants of Malta fe.
You realy should look into the history of Islamic Expansion to understand how Europeans felt threatened at that time. After Centuries of retreat the crusades were their first counter strike.
Not ot forget that for the Muslims at that time the real threat were the Mongolians under Ghenhgis Kahn who destroyed the cultural and political center Baghdad.
This link is not in English sorry for that but it may be of interest never the less:
Sorry I can't read that blog. Still I don't think there was anything "PC" about this and Friar Tuck's comments are actually pretty historically accurate. I'm not ignorant of Arab expansionism as I'm partly from one of the conquered countires (Iran).
The Muslims just have killed, looted and conquered everywhere they could for more then 400 years, and then the evil Christian crusaders came and dared to fight back - more or less in the same manner that was common at that time in history.
Neither I, nor the characters in this show implied that the Muslims acted impeccably, merely that the Templars had acted despicably. On entering Jerusalem 5th July 1099 they killed evry man woman and child in the city. The ideology of the Crusaders was probably pretty similar to modern Al Qaeda - Crusaders were taught that if they died they would go immediately to heaven absolved of all sin. Crusades were also launched against other religions such as the Albigenses who were utterly exterminated.
When the muslims conquered the Island of Malta centuries before the crusades they killed and enslaved the whole population, after that Malta stayed uninhabited for a long time - just one incident of many (or google for Cela Kula).
Plus in contrast to Islamic teachings of the Quran and Hadith, one cannot find similar in the New Testament. Jesus didn`t fought a single battle or took any slaves, in contrast to Muhammed. And dont forget the concept of takfir and kufr:Sunni vs Shia, Bahai, Alevis
Jesus acted very differently from many so-called <christians. Slavery, slaughter and conversion by the sword was practiced by many "Christian" nations and the Templars was one example of a murderous bunch of bastards (who were later burned at the stake by the inquisition - oh the irony). Maybe some, they ran the spectrum. Alot of it was just made up to discredit them. These guys got too powerful and had kings of Europeowing money to them. How best to wipe the debt and curb their power by accusing good knights of being devil worshippers. No doubt their faith was more unorthodox as they were obsessed with the quest, which took them into dark territory of eastern mysticism. People still continue to warp the truth of the bible now and hide the evidence. The templars were scapegoats.
@sonofherne They were cut down by the supposedly Christian king of France (ironically named 'Philip the Fair') when he wanted yet another loan from them for yet another war (with England this time).
