1. Anna did nothing wrong here. It is allowed to touch your piece to move it before the opponent finishes their move/hits their clock (but it's touch piece ofc).
2. Irina did not replace pieces that she clearly knocked over and yet continued to play without fixing it on her time.
3. The "sleeve-manouvering" by Irina is a bit objectionable.
4. Irina had lost it by not being able to win and having only 20 seconds left by this time
Conclusion: Irina is a sore loser, plain and simple.
"The time between making the move in the chess board and stopping his own clock and starting the opponent's clock is regarded as part of the time alotted to the player" fide laws of chess 6.8-a
So, make the move while your opponent't time is still running is irregular.
Chess should be about mental strength, not physical speed. Otherwise people should be training for chess tournaments with weights instead of tactics etc.
Anyone who blames Zatonskih in this situation has never been in a time scrabble before. Irina lost the game because she kept trying to make complicated rook moves while reaching across the entire board! With the white pieces that's just clock suicide. Krush, who still had a slight time advantage should have played Rg7+?!! which would have broken Anna's rhythm by forcing her to move the king. If followed by a swift move of her c-pawn, Krush would have won. Shame it was decided like this. :-(
So I guess all Krush had to do to win this game was quickly press the pause button immediately after a pre-move by Zatonskih. Then she could have complained to the TD about the pre-move, and the TD might have added time to her clock, therefore effectively ending the game in her favor.
Krush (not her real name) is the one who did not restore the pieces when she knocked them over and kept moving. You can not blame Anna for making her moves after Krush started cheating.
@schusterlehrling Wrong. The arbiter/tournament director (there is no referee in chess tournaments) isn't supposed to interfere with the game. She had the right to pause the clock and protest, and then the TD could have chosen to add time to her clock.
@PhilomathBret Indeed that is right, even, let's say there is a 3-move repetition on the board, the arbiter or anybody isnt supposed to interfere with the game. It will be a draw only if one of the players claim it and prove it. Which, sometimes they donot do:)
At the end Anna is clearly moving pieces before Irina has finished moving cheater. Where the heck is the TD!!?? No wonder Irina is upset. This isn't chess.
@tbsmith918 Blame it on blitz games with no increments/delay. In a time scramble, somebody usually starts breaking the "rules" (the kind that usually result in no penalty when broken). And it doesn't matter where the TD is. He can't stop the game to hand out penalties. It's up to the player to pause the clock and talk to the TD.

@mlasker2 additionally, it's obvious that zatonskih was cheating but not intentionally. technically she can't touch her piece until the other player pushes the clock, otherwise she's moving on her opponent's time. you can see this after 1:00.
they should get as much time as they want this speed chess is emulating what the game was actually invented 4 training of military officers where time matters indefinatley it doesent get any faster
It's a joke that they reduce such a competatition to a game of 5 minute speed chess to determine the US Woman's championship. Whatever happened to 40 and 60 time controls with SD 1 hour?
Yeah, sharing the championship would've been a better idea. Regardless, once the decision was made for an Armageddon tiebreak, that's it. Anna won. Why the hell would anyone pay attention to when their opponent hit their clock with just a couple of seconds left? She was moving as fast as she could, which is what anyone would do with that little time remaining.
Bobby Fischer was complaining about tournament policies decades ago, and it's absurd that it hasn't been sorted out yet. The way chess tournaments are run should be the same around the world. All of these varieties of tournament procedures are nonsense. The championship should not be determined by a blitz match unless it's a blitz tournament.
You can see at 1:08 in this video that Krush makes a move and sends a rook off the board, and then hits the clock. Tossing pieces off of the board is not a move, and the the tossed piece needs to be corrected by the tosser. Krush has a move/clock order violation here.
They both broke technical rules, whatever. I can guarantee you Krush wouldn't be bitching about how blitz is "improper" for a tiebreak had she won. In short, she agreed to the rules of the tournament, so it's her fault.
Irina Krush lost fair and square...also...if anything...Krush was knocking over pieces...then...slaps the king, making it fly right into the air! Unsporty!
This is not chess, camon, rules have to be changed to decide a national championship, it can be decided this way. Speed chess is not serious, it is some kind of mental masturbation lol
One thing for sure, they need to fix the ambiguity in the rules on this. Can you grab your piece as soon as your opponent does? If so it becomes some bizarre form of three card monte. Be clear on the rules chess federation! I'm sick of this shit.
Krush embarrassed herself by complaining. They were tied. That is why they have tiebreaks. This was not a real chess game, it was a tiebreak. A coin flip or Solkoff tiebreaks would work just as well. If she didn't like the tiebreaks, she could have chosen not to participate.
In the future an increment tiebreak would be less likely to cause problems. I prefer this one, as it is very entertaining.
You guys read Krush's open letters? They are long winded and full of petty 'cheap shots'. Zatonskih won fair and square. Krush's only argument is that she misunderstood the rules, and of course that is no argument at all. Good on Anna for not even responding to those letters. She doesn't have to defend anything.
It is just crazy to put players in this situation and expect them to try and move as fast as they can, while at the same time waiting for their opponent to hit the clock. Anyone who has played blitz otb with seconds on the clock knows its just not always possible.
I am sure Ms. Krush is fully aware of this fact. Shame on her.
This is what you get when "Armageddon" is used to decide a national chess championship -- a lot of chaos and controversy about the result. Poor Irina, I sympathize with her.
I sympathize with Anna more. She won a title fair and square under the rules both players agreed to in advance, but it looks tainted because the rules were so stupid. The fact that nobody really knew what the rules were about something as basic as moving before the clock is pushed make nobody look good. There have been championship tournaments entirely based around Blitz. How could nobody know the rules on this?
Another issue is that Anna was moving before her opponent hit her clock, and that is illegal. The director should have intervened by stopping the clock and giving Anna a warning or go with no warning and just penalize by giving Irina an extra minute on her clock.
As far as a playoff, an idea is to have them do a playoff match for the trophy and extra cash and they being awarded co-champion titles.
In a game like this, anything can happen. Having anyone intervened in a such a fast-paced game, and considering the meaning of this game, would've been very inappropriate. No director would do that, unless Irina would've complained at the spot. Having the director not intervening in no way justifies Irina's defeat, however.
It is awful that a national championship has to be decided by a speed game. With 7.5 from 9 rounds they both deserved to share the title. I can see having a playoff if there were a four-way (or greater) tie for first.
Irina Krush should be excused for slapping the piece off the board and exiting, for the stress of that playoff game was high and the game was played very quickly - in a slower time control you have time to calm down and collect yourself before admitting defeat.
a) remove your god damn jacket instead of wasting on second every move fixing your sleeve...who plays a blitz game for a National Championship in a jacket?
b) In the Armageddon you start with 6:00 vs 4:30 and you whine about losing on time?
Krush is completely right but instead of this open letter protesting this she should have filed a complaint with the arbiter immeadiately, its too late now. This being said a national finals match shouldnt be decided by armaggedon. Finally the fact shes taking hese actions now sounds like shes just angry she lost the title.
Its very silly indeed, and the more it goes on the more serious chess players are losing respect for her. Her harem keeps coming up with wild ideas on more matches, lawsuits, and Anna somehow using Jedi mind tricks. Irina can keep whining, and even trigger a lawsuit, but the end result wont be in her favor. Like I said she has a bigger fanclub, but the important people in chess realize this is long since been done. At this point I feel pity for her fans and her delusions.
Krush is making a fool of herself with her protest. Nothing her opponent did was as bad as knocking over the rook during the game without picking it up. And even if it was, to protest days after the tournament has finished is silly.
If this degenerated to a lawsuit- there is obvious damage and the remedy might in fact be forfeiture of title by Anna. The USCF should wake up and address this... now
The officials were some how able to record the moves of the game. That tells me they were not asleep. Observing the game and failing to take action as Anna's improper actions were taking place gives me the opinion that they were either unqualified or not impartial. Either way who could argue against my belief that its the officiating that truly failed. Thats the primary reason I feel this injustice should be corrected by the USCF. A rematch or shared title would be appropriate.
Scatman - Ill just use your own words-"Anna was trying to move as fast as she could, in the process she "accidentally" began moving on Irina's time. This is illegal" Yes you are correct- it was illegal and a person who just finished a six hour game (as Irina did) should not be expected to immediately identify what went wrong. Thats why you have officials- and they did nothing- thats the injustice.
No matter who's side you are on in this dispute, you have to agree that Irina's 'oh, c'mon!' slapshot of her king into the audience must rank as one of the funniest chess moments ever. Even after replaying that scene at least 20x I still can't stop myself from cracking up.
"hungarianriot" you clearly don't play chess. Look at the games, Irina was lucky to even catch Irina(although she went .5 up), and then lucky to draw her.
A much better tournament than Irina? That's quite the foolish thing to say considering they were TIED after nine rounds. Usually when you have a better tournament than someone, it implies that your score be higher as well.
And to address the claims that Anna is not a deserving champion, who "didn't lift her self above the competition". Anna had, for the most part, a far better tournament than Irina. Excluding her game with Tuvshingtus where she went horribly astray in the opening but nonetheless fought back, Anna was winning in every game, including her encounter with Irina.
Her intent was to move as fast as she could. Nobody new what was happening, not Irina, not the spectators, and probably not Anna. And to "PEACE4ALLINOURTIME", there is no way Irina should be given the win, are you kidding me? If she would have protested during the game or immediately after, they would have looked at the tape and granted her 2 extra minutes(not an immediate win, although would have lead to it), since she did not protest during this time she forfeits all right to protest the game.
I looked up the rules scatman was posting to make sure he was telling the truth, he was. I hate to sound haughty, but I keep hearing what people "think" should happen, their ideas. Rules are rules, instead of painting Anna as the devil or sending comments on Youtube, you should consider making an effort to get involved with the organization to make a difference in the future. Your personal bias or clever solutions dont hold up to the rules made, make an effort to changing them in the future.
"Olympians who have been found to have used steroids many years after their medal performances forfeit them justly." Everyone is flat out calling Anna a cheater, Im glad you have the ability to know what she was thinking and who she is as a person, must be nice. This was a blown call by the tds, Anna is not on steroids and did not stack the board with extra queens, your analogy is burning Anna at the cross which is unfair. Try to look at this objectively as another sport and without bias.
I see clear intent on her part in the video of Anna moving before Irina has. How? Because she does. Having that been said I don't think this is the question of primary importance. This all happened at the very end of the game, with emotions very high. It is reasonable for Irina not to realize what happened until later. The question is if this exact scenario were to occur again, what should the protocol be for an appeal?
Viewing the video several times before I understood the situation I find it undeniable that Krush should be granted the win. There is improper conduct on the part of the so called champion. Its very sad I am reminded of Kasparov v. Polgar. The idea of ending a US Championship match with such a silly formed game is a disgrace. USCF should correct this or direct a rematch- The shame of a tainted victory does not flow from the name of the alleged victor. The video is undeniable
If anything they should really review Irinas actions. There are no technical fouls in chess because its usually non-physical, but Irina has to learn she cant endanger others with mindless anger and outburts. That piece clearly could have hit someones eye, she should consider an anger management course. Sotovo you say not really, but as you can see, and will see, it is really. Its done, its over, Im sorry it wasnt a beautiful victory and that you disagree, but it is what it is.
So, let me get this straight, you are proposing an instant replay system in chess, in which any side can claim a result after multiple days. I completely agree with seattlechessmike, this is nothing more than a witch hunt based on popularity and looks. Coming from chess players, this is all the more disturbing.
And.... you are wrong. Deceiving implies intent of wrongdoing. It is clear that she did not intend to move on Irina's time. Your last sentence is absolutely correct, and if you had read anything that I wrote, you would see that I completely agree. Anna did break the rules, but that was not her intent, Irina's claim that she broke those rules is a valid one, but it is coming to late.
"It is clear that she did not intend to move on Irina's time."
We do not agree. How are you aware of Anna's intent? This is a subjective question for us to answer and only she can answer that.
"but it is coming too late"
It certainly could not have come during the final few seconds when players were consumed only with moving as fast as possible. When should it have come? A time limit for an appeal? I agree. A week seems reasonable.
you get disqualified for a falstart whether you inteded it or not, or if there are illegal substances detected in your blood your result won't be recognized no matter if you consciously used steroids (or whatever) or not etc.
I think a lot of people are missing the point, only scatman57 seems to be making any sense. Where does the witchhunt stop if it begins? If someone from the very first round has video of someone making a move on their time should they redo the whole tournament? Whats done is done, Anna is the champion, thats final. Now you can start planning on how to make tournaments more appropriate, or looking for these errors in the future. Unlike others, I dont know either, and this is unbias.
"If someone from the very first round has video of someone making a move on their time should they redo the whole tournament?"
No, that instance should have been dealt with in the first round which is over. The legalities of the last game only are in question and need to be resolved.
Olympians who have been found to have used steroids many years after their medal performances forfeit them justly.
"Whats done is done, Anna is the champion, thats final."
As I said before, the t.d has no right, according to USCF rules to interfere in a game, rule infraction or not, unless he is asked to do so by one of the two players participating in the game.
Really? As far as I know the definition of "cheat" is to " deprive somebody of something by deceit". So where is the "deceit". What clearly happened was that Anna was trying to move as fast as she could, in the process she "accidentally" began moving on Irina's time. This is illegal, but the performance of these actions by Anna was not in fact cheating as they were done by accident.
Sorry but I don't buy that at all, Anna has been playing far too long to make "accidents" like that at a chess championship no less. Even if it was accidental, you said it yourself, it was illegal and it doesn't matter if it was accidental or not, the organizers should have called it but they might not have realized what was going on either.
Anna deceived THE CLOCK by moving her pieces while Irina's time was running. The clock was no longer a true measure of the balance of time. This is cheating. Every chess master will know that you cannot move while it is your opponents turn.
They should not settle it in a playoff game. If, for example, you look at a tape of a game you were winning one week ago and see that in the process of mating you, your opponent moved a bishop from g1 to g2, you have no right to claim that you won the game or even that the you should replay the game. It is simply too late. This claim should've been made in the process of the game or immediately following.
If you read Irina's letter, she didn't know how she was losing on time after having such a large lead, she realized what happened AFTERWORDS watching the video. This is not too late and the championship should be disputed.
What Irina doesnt realize is that she has a bigger audience seen in these comments. So her sour grapes campaign is destroying Zatonskihs win to the point where she might have to share the title. Irina Krush is a superstar like in any other sport, and expects every call to go her way. Everyone knows shes bullying the organization and Zatonskih to share the title. Irina, you know how you can prove you are a real champion, congratulate Zatonski.
In every sport, there are sometimes mistakes made, sometimes favoring you, sometimes not. I dare Irina to swear on her life she never made moves on her opponents time, it happens quite often. If she wasnt so flustered she could have made her argument then, you cant calculate excuses weeks later. Its like going back on a team a week after winning the world series and saying well we checked and one of the homeruns you hit was a foul, we are taking your championship away, it is absurd.
Your analogy is inaccurate. This is more like a team using aluminum bats (or cork filled bats) during extra innings in the world series. And anyway, she WAS flustered and she did know something was wrong, she just didn't know how Zatonskih was doing it.
Hell it's clear to me exactly like it's clear to Krush. Zat is down 3 seconds to 8, the only way of course, for Zat to have subsequently won on time at that point was if she was cheating (assuming both players were playing at the same speed, which they were).
If a group of players is tied in "any" championship, they are to immidiatly play playoff games, whereafter if they are still tied they are to play armageddon games. This is and has been the rule in all chess championships for some years now. Irina's claim to a joint championship is obsurd. By USCF, and Fide for that matter, rules a player can only protest the decission of a game, immidiatly following it, certainly not a week later.
Her claim that she didn't notice it do to the short time constraints is a valid one. However, if this is really her claim, she should aim to get armegeddon games removed from chess. Not, claim that Anna cheated, as it is obvious that Anna moving on Irina's time was nothing more then human instinct. She was low on time, she moved as fast as she could, not noticing that she was moving too fast. Pure and simple, Anna is United States Champion, completely diserving.
Are you kidding me? Anna clearly cheated by using Irina's time. Have you ever been in a race (for a championship) and been purposely tripped? You better damn well be angry
In Reply to "rusviewer"'s comment. The t.d has no right to disqualify a player during a match, unless he is specificly given a complaint by the opposing player.
So, judge had to disqualify Zatonskih, but judges usually prefer not to interfere in the game especially as this was armagedonn. So, Crush or her manager had to give a protest themselves.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Zatonskih, a woman with big boobies from Hohlandia (=Ukraina), used her big weight but not brains to beat her opponent flat Jew Crash. Zatonskih had very bad and absolutly passive position and at one moment she had only 2 seconds against 6. She could only move her pawn a, b, c but not other pieces. Crash also could eat a rook e7 for nothing instead of Qf3. Last 2 moves Zatonskih holded her hand on the clock and not allowed Crush to push the button. It is not honesty and it is not a chess!
I downloaded this video and watched it a 1/4 speed in VLC. There were no less than 5 instances where Zatonskih grabbed her piece and started her move before Krush has finished her move by punching the clock. Say what you will about the randomness of blitz chess and time trouble, but this was supposed to be a regulated tournament, not a park bench. Hard to believe the organizers let the result stand without consulting the video.
You are allowed to make any move that doesn't violate the rules. All you crybabies claiming Anna was simply moving pieces are out of line. Anna toucehd the pieces before Irina pushed the clock and thus caused the slip of the pieces.
According to the rules the referee should have given extra time to Irina for that offense, but he decided to allow the break of the rules.

It's a joke that they reduce such a competatition to a game of 5 minute speed chess to determine the US Woman's championship. Whatever happened to 40 and 60 time controls with SD 1 hour?
Rustinpeaces 3 years ago
Yeah, sharing the championship would've been a better idea. Regardless, once the decision was made for an Armageddon tiebreak, that's it. Anna won. Why the hell would anyone pay attention to when their opponent hit their clock with just a couple of seconds left? She was moving as fast as she could, which is what anyone would do with that little time remaining.
Koobeeziak 3 years ago
Bobby Fischer was complaining about tournament policies decades ago, and it's absurd that it hasn't been sorted out yet. The way chess tournaments are run should be the same around the world. All of these varieties of tournament procedures are nonsense. The championship should not be determined by a blitz match unless it's a blitz tournament.
surfguitarshredder 3 years ago
You can see at 1:08 in this video that Krush makes a move and sends a rook off the board, and then hits the clock. Tossing pieces off of the board is not a move, and the the tossed piece needs to be corrected by the tosser. Krush has a move/clock order violation here.

They both broke technical rules, whatever. I can guarantee you Krush wouldn't be bitching about how blitz is "improper" for a tiebreak had she won. In short, she agreed to the rules of the tournament, so it's her fault.

One thing for sure, they need to fix the ambiguity in the rules on this. Can you grab your piece as soon as your opponent does? If so it becomes some bizarre form of three card monte. Be clear on the rules chess federation! I'm sick of this shit.
CaptainCologne 3 years ago

Gohma 3 years ago
This is what you get when "Armageddon" is used to decide a national chess championship -- a lot of chaos and controversy about the result. Poor Irina, I sympathize with her.
mightypawn04 3 years ago
I sympathize with Anna more. She won a title fair and square under the rules both players agreed to in advance, but it looks tainted because the rules were so stupid. The fact that nobody really knew what the rules were about something as basic as moving before the clock is pushed make nobody look good. There have been championship tournaments entirely based around Blitz. How could nobody know the rules on this?
BobLarrabee 3 years ago
Krush's open letter protest is completely baseless. IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO MOVE BEFORE THE OPPONENT PUNCHES THE CLOCK.
In fact the only illegal move I can see, is Krush making a piece fall.
myraanon1 3 years ago
Hilarious! They did actually look like "clock punching monkeys", as Irina eloquently put it into words.
vince117 3 years ago
Another issue is that Anna was moving before her opponent hit her clock, and that is illegal. The director should have intervened by stopping the clock and giving Anna a warning or go with no warning and just penalize by giving Irina an extra minute on her clock.
As far as a playoff, an idea is to have them do a playoff match for the trophy and extra cash and they being awarded co-champion titles.
Bert Wilson
Lamarrxyz 3 years ago
In a game like this, anything can happen. Having anyone intervened in a such a fast-paced game, and considering the meaning of this game, would've been very inappropriate. No director would do that, unless Irina would've complained at the spot. Having the director not intervening in no way justifies Irina's defeat, however.
izgil 3 years ago
It's not illegal. The USCF has weighed in. The TD assumed it was illegal but the way the rules are written, it isn't.
Even if it were illegal, it's the player's job to complain, not the TD's job to call it.
BobLarrabee 3 years ago
It is awful that a national championship has to be decided by a speed game. With 7.5 from 9 rounds they both deserved to share the title. I can see having a playoff if there were a four-way (or greater) tie for first.
Irina Krush should be excused for slapping the piece off the board and exiting, for the stress of that playoff game was high and the game was played very quickly - in a slower time control you have time to calm down and collect yourself before admitting defeat.

This being said a national finals match shouldnt be decided by armaggedon. Finally the fact shes taking hese actions now sounds like shes just angry she lost the title.
MyDecember2006 3 years ago
Its very silly indeed, and the more it goes on the more serious chess players are losing respect for her. Her harem keeps coming up with wild ideas on more matches, lawsuits, and Anna somehow using Jedi mind tricks. Irina can keep whining, and even trigger a lawsuit, but the end result wont be in her favor. Like I said she has a bigger fanclub, but the important people in chess realize this is long since been done. At this point I feel pity for her fans and her delusions.
seattlechessmike 3 years ago
Krush is making a fool of herself with her protest. Nothing her opponent did was as bad as knocking over the rook during the game without picking it up. And even if it was, to protest days after the tournament has finished is silly.
jacqueslaumone 3 years ago
If this degenerated to a lawsuit- there is obvious damage and the remedy might in fact be forfeiture of title by Anna. The USCF should wake up and address this... now
PEACE4ALLINOURTIME 3 years ago
The officials were some how able to record the moves of the game. That tells me they were not asleep. Observing the game and failing to take action as Anna's improper actions were taking place gives me the opinion that they were either unqualified or not impartial. Either way who could argue against my belief that its the officiating that truly failed. Thats the primary reason I feel this injustice should be corrected by the USCF. A rematch or shared title would be appropriate.
PEACE4ALLINOURTIME 3 years ago
Scatman - Ill just use your own words-"Anna was trying to move as fast as she could, in the process she "accidentally" began moving on Irina's time. This is illegal" Yes you are correct- it was illegal and a person who just finished a six hour game (as Irina did) should not be expected to immediately identify what went wrong. Thats why you have officials- and they did nothing- thats the injustice.
PEACE4ALLINOURTIME 3 years ago
No matter who's side you are on in this dispute, you have to agree that Irina's 'oh, c'mon!' slapshot of her king into the audience must rank as one of the funniest chess moments ever. Even after replaying that scene at least 20x I still can't stop myself from cracking up.

"hungarianriot" you clearly don't play chess. Look at the games, Irina was lucky to even catch Irina(although she went .5 up), and then lucky to draw her.
scatman57 3 years ago
A much better tournament than Irina? That's quite the foolish thing to say considering they were TIED after nine rounds. Usually when you have a better tournament than someone, it implies that your score be higher as well.
You make no sense.
hungarianriot 3 years ago
And to address the claims that Anna is not a deserving champion, who "didn't lift her self above the competition". Anna had, for the most part, a far better tournament than Irina. Excluding her game with Tuvshingtus where she went horribly astray in the opening but nonetheless fought back, Anna was winning in every game, including her encounter with Irina.
scatman57 3 years ago
Her intent was to move as fast as she could. Nobody new what was happening, not Irina, not the spectators, and probably not Anna. And to "PEACE4ALLINOURTIME", there is no way Irina should be given the win, are you kidding me? If she would have protested during the game or immediately after, they would have looked at the tape and granted her 2 extra minutes(not an immediate win, although would have lead to it), since she did not protest during this time she forfeits all right to protest the game.
scatman57 3 years ago

Try to look at this objectively as another sport and without bias.
seattlechessmike 3 years ago
I see clear intent on her part in the video of Anna moving before Irina has. How? Because she does. Having that been said I don't think this is the question of primary importance. This all happened at the very end of the game, with emotions very high. It is reasonable for Irina not to realize what happened until later. The question is if this exact scenario were to occur again, what should the protocol be for an appeal?
sotovo 3 years ago
Viewing the video several times before I understood the situation I find it undeniable that Krush should be granted the win. There is improper conduct on the part of the so called champion. Its very sad I am reminded of Kasparov v. Polgar. The idea of ending a US Championship match with such a silly formed game is a disgrace. USCF should correct this or direct a rematch- The shame of a tainted victory does not flow from the name of the alleged victor. The video is undeniable
PEACE4ALLINOURTIME 3 years ago
If anything they should really review Irinas actions. There are no technical fouls in chess because its usually non-physical, but Irina has to learn she cant endanger others with mindless anger and outburts. That piece clearly could have hit someones eye, she should consider an anger management course. Sotovo you say not really, but as you can see, and will see, it is really. Its done, its over, Im sorry it wasnt a beautiful victory and that you disagree, but it is what it is.
seattlechessmike 3 years ago
So, let me get this straight, you are proposing an instant replay system in chess, in which any side can claim a result after multiple days. I completely agree with seattlechessmike, this is nothing more than a witch hunt based on popularity and looks. Coming from chess players, this is all the more disturbing.
scatman57 3 years ago
And.... you are wrong. Deceiving implies intent of wrongdoing. It is clear that she did not intend to move on Irina's time. Your last sentence is absolutely correct, and if you had read anything that I wrote, you would see that I completely agree. Anna did break the rules, but that was not her intent, Irina's claim that she broke those rules is a valid one, but it is coming to late.
scatman57 3 years ago
"It is clear that she did not intend to move on Irina's time."
We do not agree. How are you aware of Anna's intent? This is a subjective question for us to answer and only she can answer that.
"but it is coming too late"
It certainly could not have come during the final few seconds when players were consumed only with moving as fast as possible. When should it have come? A time limit for an appeal? I agree. A week seems reasonable.
sotovo 3 years ago
you get disqualified for a falstart whether you inteded it or not, or if there are illegal substances detected in your blood your result won't be recognized no matter if you consciously used steroids (or whatever) or not etc.
vibovitold 3 years ago
I think a lot of people are missing the point, only scatman57 seems to be making any sense. Where does the witchhunt stop if it begins? If someone from the very first round has video of someone making a move on their time should they redo the whole tournament? Whats done is done, Anna is the champion, thats final. Now you can start planning on how to make tournaments more appropriate, or looking for these errors in the future. Unlike others, I dont know either, and this is unbias.
seattlechessmike 3 years ago 2
"If someone from the very first round has video of someone making a move on their time should they redo the whole tournament?"
No, that instance should have been dealt with in the first round which is over. The legalities of the last game only are in question and need to be resolved.
Olympians who have been found to have used steroids many years after their medal performances forfeit them justly.
"Whats done is done, Anna is the champion, thats final."
Not really.
sotovo 3 years ago
As I said before, the t.d has no right, according to USCF rules to interfere in a game, rule infraction or not, unless he is asked to do so by one of the two players participating in the game.
scatman57 3 years ago
Really? As far as I know the definition of "cheat" is to " deprive somebody of something by deceit". So where is the "deceit". What clearly happened was that Anna was trying to move as fast as she could, in the process she "accidentally" began moving on Irina's time. This is illegal, but the performance of these actions by Anna was not in fact cheating as they were done by accident.
scatman57 3 years ago
Sorry but I don't buy that at all, Anna has been playing far too long to make "accidents" like that at a chess championship no less. Even if it was accidental, you said it yourself, it was illegal and it doesn't matter if it was accidental or not, the organizers should have called it but they might not have realized what was going on either.
mar504 3 years ago
Anna deceived THE CLOCK by moving her pieces while Irina's time was running. The clock was no longer a true measure of the balance of time. This is cheating. Every chess master will know that you cannot move while it is your opponents turn.
sotovo 3 years ago
They should not settle it in a playoff game. If, for example, you look at a tape of a game you were winning one week ago and see that in the process of mating you, your opponent moved a bishop from g1 to g2, you have no right to claim that you won the game or even that the you should replay the game. It is simply too late. This claim should've been made in the process of the game or immediately following.
scatman57 3 years ago
If you read Irina's letter, she didn't know how she was losing on time after having such a large lead, she realized what happened AFTERWORDS watching the video. This is not too late and the championship should be disputed.

Brianjonestown 3 years ago
What Irina doesnt realize is that she has a bigger audience seen in these comments. So her sour grapes campaign is destroying Zatonskihs win to the point where she might have to share the title. Irina Krush is a superstar like in any other sport, and expects every call to go her way. Everyone knows shes bullying the organization and Zatonskih to share the title. Irina, you know how you can prove you are a real champion, congratulate Zatonski.
seattlechessmike 3 years ago
In every sport, there are sometimes mistakes made, sometimes favoring you, sometimes not. I dare Irina to swear on her life she never made moves on her opponents time, it happens quite often. If she wasnt so flustered she could have made her argument then, you cant calculate excuses weeks later. Its like going back on a team a week after winning the world series and saying well we checked and one of the homeruns you hit was a foul, we are taking your championship away, it is absurd.
seattlechessmike 3 years ago
Your analogy is inaccurate. This is more like a team using aluminum bats (or cork filled bats) during extra innings in the world series. And anyway, she WAS flustered and she did know something was wrong, she just didn't know how Zatonskih was doing it.
hungarianriot 3 years ago
Somebody should show the video in slow motion to show that Zatonskih was clearly cheating.
Secondly, Irina Krush is hot.
ParadiseDestroyed 3 years ago
By the end of the time scramble Zatonskih is literally moving her piece the exact same time Krush is moving hers.
hungarianriot 3 years ago
Hell it's clear to me exactly like it's clear to Krush. Zat is down 3 seconds to 8, the only way of course, for Zat to have subsequently won on time at that point was if she was cheating (assuming both players were playing at the same speed, which they were).
hungarianriot 3 years ago
Scat you're an idiot. You just said that it is obvious that Anna was moving "on Irina's time". That is cheating, human instinct or not.
hungarianriot 3 years ago
If a group of players is tied in "any" championship, they are to immidiatly play playoff games, whereafter if they are still tied they are to play armageddon games. This is and has been the rule in all chess championships for some years now. Irina's claim to a joint championship is obsurd. By USCF, and Fide for that matter, rules a player can only protest the decission of a game, immidiatly following it, certainly not a week later.
scatman57 3 years ago
Her claim that she didn't notice it do to the short time constraints is a valid one. However, if this is really her claim, she should aim to get armegeddon games removed from chess. Not, claim that Anna cheated, as it is obvious that Anna moving on Irina's time was nothing more then human instinct. She was low on time, she moved as fast as she could, not noticing that she was moving too fast. Pure and simple, Anna is United States Champion, completely diserving.
scatman57 3 years ago
Irina's complaint is ludicrous, malicious, and lacking any logic. It is also, simply, coming too late.
scatman57 3 years ago
I don't like the playing attitudes of the both players in this math. Seems too much hatred.
Anna's win is without grace while Irina lost her dignity at the end although we can understand her emotion.
