@pooky2483 I grew up in the UK and its completely appropriate for a 15 yo to drive here. The lanes are much wider, traffic is much less aggressive and the speed limits much slower. When you turn 15 here, you can get your permit. That takes about 6 months, after that, you can drive with an adult over 21 and is licensed. You have to do that for a min of 6 months, then you get your license. Also, FYI, the 15 yo didnt cause the accident. The 17 yo trying to pass in unsafe conditions did.

It is almost unbelievable to me how many accidents I've avoided, how many pets I have missed, and how many times I've navigated bad roads without incident by simply going no more than 5mph over the speed limit, or in snowy conditions, at least 5-10mph below. @hamnet99 Here in TN you can drive at 15 with a learners permitt but your parent has to be in the car with you. You have to have your permitt 1 year before you can get your liscenses.

It is almost unbelievable to me how many accidents I've avoided, how many pets I have missed, and how many times I've navigated bad roads without incident by simply going no more than 5mph over the speed limit, or in snowy conditions, at least 5-10mph below. Sometimes you can't help an accident, but most times, someone's poor judgement is to blame.

People do stupid things and they die. The only thing I really hate is when they kill others in the process. Driving is the most dangerous thing most americans do in their day and despite that, most do it relatively carelessly and poorly. I know people are human and make mistakes but the standards for obtaining a car license should be raised considerably and those who do reckless shit on the road should be far more heavily punished. Reckless driving should be leveled at people more often.

@AFatalPapercut every situation if different my rule of thumb is if they are going 5 or more UNDER the speed limit then a pass is necessary (unless for short drives) however if they are going the speed limit during long drives then it is necessary to pass... as I usually travel 5-10 over the limit rarely do I travel excessive of 15 (and doing so Its usually in a pack of cars on the freeway such as going 70 in a 55... going slower than traffic is by far much dangerous than speeding safely...

So, the time for each speed, say on a 10-mile journey, would be approx 17 mins at 30mph or 11 mins at 55, so on a ten-mile jurney you would save around 6 minutes

@blzbub1 theory is nice but speed limits are put in place because thought has been put into place take into account: traffic flow, road conditions, road types, stopping distances, visibility etc.
It is worth noting that from 50km/h to 100km/h the total braking distance of your car can increase from 15 metres to 60 metres. When you double the speed of your car you multiply the total braking distance four times.

I bet if people were more educated on how little time they save speeding to their destination they would be more apt to drive normal. Instead of just talking about seat belts or speeding we should be calculating the minutes at our speed and destination. It is true that these girls were only going to save a few seconds off their time and in most cases only 2 minutes are saved.

it's frustrating when someone is doing 35-40 in 55 mph zone. especially when that person has 10-15 cars lined up behind them. and that person feels they have the right to go that slow because they feel uncomfortable. if you feel uncomfortable driving then you should not drive. and if you know you don't do the speed limit pull over at a safe location and let everyone go by. i shouldn't have to leave my house 50 minutes early for a 15 minute drive.
