I wonder why most netbook retailers sell it with the shitty linpus/xandros instread of just having xubuntu, ubuntu LSD or netbook remix as the default linux OS.
I have the same problem as darave1 and yeah i installed all the drivers and still didnt work i new to ubuntu can any one help plz and i have an AAO (Acer Aspire One)
I have this on my AAO (acer aspire one) but I was wondering what you all would prefer? Linpus or UNR (ubuntu network remix). Or would you prefer a different linux OS? Just wondering.
I installed netbook remix and I cant activate the wireless. When I right click on the network connection to activate the wireless it wouldnt let me, is there anything I need to do to activate it?
I just installed the netbook remix on my Aspire One a110 yesterday. It's beautiful. Everything works well - WiFi, sound, video playback, etc. I'm impressed. NOTE: I did follow Ubuntu's advice and tested first by booting from a USB flask disk to test it. When I tested everything and it all worked I did a full install.
Yes, I just installed Netbook remix on my Intrepid installed Aspire One and it rocks. Netbook Remix is really made for these smaller screens. The Aspire One was made for Ubuntu.
this netbook is really powerful but with ubuntu on it must be a blast!! how did you installed it?? check the HD video-promo I made on an aspire one at my videos or here /watch?v=cZH-FYUg20Q
Hey mate nice! I just ordered my acer one 120 GB HD. Is ubuntu remix drivers or is it actually the whole ubuntu iso to install from scratch with...hopefully it will do all the work for me and let me do a fresh install of ubuntu without having to go through the hassle of getting ubuntu to work.
This is how GUI of netbooks should be. different from laptops and more like pda - game console. Minimum options great look and everything working for non advanced users and with full potential for advanced ones. People says wow for devices a lot less flexible and useful just because they don't look as a pc (pda, psp, ipod touch); people is marveled when an iphone gets a trivial new application. Think on these devices like a PDA on steroids, not like a mini-laptop. ;)
If your gonna put Ubuntu on, get the 120GB HD version rather than the 8GB SSD (It also has double the ram, 1024MB.) Otherwise get one of the Linux distros made to use very little resources, like Xubuntu (if you want to stay in the Ubuntu branch.)
a couple of things you are going to need if you want to install XP or Ubuntu,a external usb dvd/cd drive, you might want to change your hard drive to some thing a little bigger,it uses a 8 gig sd hard drive, its a great laptop but for 1.6 gigahertz it can do a lot better compared to the small operating system in it,the linux that comes with it,is kind of a waste.you can install xp or ubunto using a usb flash stick or memory card, and just boot the installation from the USB stick,so its not too bad
its a great Laptop, but the manuals are crap,i bought two of them, the Linux on them is crap, there is no command line, its pretty hidden, and some of the European versions come with 8 gig,so i am putting Ubuntu Linux operating on them, because i have never heard a linux operating system without a command line, the mouse is pretty delicate, your better buying a seperate Usb mouse for it,so it last longer,i personally want to use it for board projection of designs, but the linux wont accept my cad......
You can access the terminal in Linpus Lite Linux by opening up Thunar File Manager (just open My Docs from the simplified menu) and go to File, then Terminal. There's a tutorial online to unlock "advanced mode" (a regular desktop) to replace the XFCE frontend that Linpus Lite uses. I don't have the link handy, but you can find it pretty easily with a Google search.
I plan on trying out Ubuntu, or preferably Linux Mint, on my Acer Aspire One.
Its looking good, are there still things not functioning, like the microphone ? My aspire one is coming in a few days, I will give the fedora 8 based linpus lite a go but feel inclined towards ubuntu on a 4gb flash card.....
i have just bought a acer aspire one d257 netbook, i would like to install ubuntu but i don't know wich one works better on a nettbook.
Rothaus2011 5 months ago
@Rothaus2011 the netbook edition should be the best but there are also some smaller distributions that can fit better. it's a matter of taste really

@o0AGE0o You might want to try jolicloud, it's based on UNR but more web oriented

I did that about a few months back. Got my invite before it went open beta.

Have you tried enabling the proprietary non free drivers? What WLAN device is it, and what netbook?

do u have both windows and ubuntu installed on it? and is there games? i have this computer... would u recommend me doing this?
mizt3rman 2 years ago
Currently i run Crunchbang Linux Lite, which is a custum ubuntu flavour.
I would recommend only Ubuntu. There are hundreds of games to play on Linux. Enjoy ;)

wireless networks, or Ethernet LAN connection ...
For that reason it clear, but now I want to return
it, that recommend it for drivers?
trowhiphop 3 years ago
huh? i installed UNR (JAUNTY) on my aspire one and the wireless worked out of the box .
if you are having problems just go to hardware drivers>and select madwifi drivers. simple

I'm afraid you have to install the standard ubuntu iso and then install the ubuntu-netbook-remix package...

That's a great way of thinking about it. I would much rather have a ~2 pound machine like this than a pda.

Microphone is working. Not sure about hibernation, suspend. I think there's a problem with SD card readers too, but I haven't had the chance to try.
Give Linpus a chance just to see how fast it boots (really amazing!). Then replace it with Ubuntu.

Yes I will do that, I will keep ubuntu on a separate
4gb SD card, The company I bought the acer aspire from didint supply the back up disc(they charge extra for it apparently....
