Hockey players can skate 20+mph. They have razor sharp blades on their feet, have 5-6 foot tall sticks with sharp edges and you can legally hit someone if you didn't have pads someone would die every game, same with football. Get hit by a cannon ball and not feel it? They have a cup, helmet, shoulder pads and pads on their thighs, the stomach and everything else is not padded. Even with the pads the amount of injuries in AF is freightening. In this video nearly every hit led to some serious injury.

I played Rugby at school and uni and thought like you that AF players were not tough, that was until I did a year in the states and played it at uni and found out quickly just why you need those pads.

In AF almost any type of tackling is allowed inc hits from behind, plus anyone gets hit not just ball carrier so you get blindsided alot and cant brace for hits.
