  • I remember hearing of Elvis' death because I was young enough for it to shock me... I also remember where I was when I heard about Syd Barrett, but even though i liked George Harrison a lot, his death had no impact on me...

  • I remember Elvis' death too. But, i was never a big fan. It certainly affected a lot of older people though.

Syd Barrett is an interesting choice. I heard recently, that he played his last ever gig with Pink Floyd in my hometown. Cool eh?

  • I don't have too many "what were you doing when" moments-especially since most of the news now comes via a google headline or a twitter post. I remember feeling disappointed when I hear about Heath Ledger-I always thought he seemed like a nice guy. I also remember a couple of comicbook artists died within a few months of each other. They were all really young & they died unexpectedly. I remember thinking that they were my age. Plus they were active online which made it feel like you knew them.

  • I know what you mean about news these days being "reported" via Twitter. I do remember that evening when Micaheal Jackson died & following the story via Twitter & Facebook. A sign of the times perhaps?

I think the point with "celebrities" is that we feel we know them through their work. Especially if they have an online prescence too :)

  • Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecambe, Spike Milligan, Pope John Paul Second, George Harrison, there are so meny greats that have died when I can remember the sad news!

  • That's a good list. It's only when you start to think about it that you realise how many deaths you can remember.

And i can remember all of those :)

  • While 911 is the most traumatic, I would say Elvis passing made the biggest impression due to the reaction the adults around me had.

  • As a world event, i agree that 9/11 was a huge event & one that will stay with anyone who experienced it for a very long time. I think the only real comparison is the shooting of JFK, especially for older people :)

  • This will sound silly, but when I was in Boot Camp for the Marines, John Candy died. That affected me.

  • Actually, i don't think that's silly at all.

I remember his death too. Partly because it was a real shock & because he was so young. I also enjoyed his movies too :)

  • As for musical clebrity, it has to be Elvisfor me personally. The first one, anyway. I remember the day clearly and calling my mother at work, and hearing her cry. Good vlog!

  • Thanks. I'm sure that Elvis was a big one for a lot of people. Sorry for the pun, but he shook up the music world & in some ways, changed the world of popular music forever. Without Elvis there would have been no Beatles etc etc :)

  • DJ Scott La Rock, although he died the year I was born, the inspiration that was instilled in KRS ONE from his death is something that I am extremely grateful for.

  • Thanks for that. Although i'd heard of KRS ONE, i didn't know of Scott La Rock. I've just read about him on Wikipedia, so i've learned something new today. Thanks :)

  • Great video, I need to think if There is a story in mine that justifies a video.

  • Thanks Ran.

I look forward to hearing any story you come up with :)

  • Well, I think I told mine already - But I look forward to the additional responses you get!

  • Indeed you did & that's what inspired this. Thanks for adding your orignal video as a response btw :)

  • i was pretty devestated that margaret thatcher wasnt killed in the brighton bombing, apart from that i cant think of one.

  • I'm sure you're not alone in that sentiment :)

  • Elvis Presley... that's the one I remember more than these others. But it was because I was 9 years old and sitting next to my mother at the time and watched her reaction. Seeing adults cry was a big deal at that age.

Unrelated and slightly weird - I have this mental image of you posing a'la Edvard's "The Scream" with that teddy bear posed just like that behind you.

    Don't ask why. I haven't a clue.

  • I was never a big Elvis fan, especially in his later years. What shocks me now is how young he was when he died!

One of the things i remember about JFK's assasination, is the effect it had on my parents. That was a really big deal back then.

As for The Scream reference. Yes, that is a little weird. I've heard a teddy scream & i'm not sure i'd want to :)

  • I remember waking up to the news of George Harrison's death more years ago than we both realize. Of course, MJ's death was the one that hit me with hardest in recent history. I will be doing a video response to this..I hope! Good video!

  • I actually remember Linda McCartney's death coming as a shock. Especially as they lived pretty close to me.

I know that MJ's death affected you, so it will be interesting to hear your story :)
