Billy's sister Sophia eloped with a Sheperdson. The Sheperdson men got angry at Sophia, and tried to stop her. The Grangerford men got mad at the Sheperdson boy, and went to kill him. That's what I could piece together(from the movie and book).

Actually I think Elijahh Wood was Macaulay Culkin's cousin, but Culkin was the bad one who killed his baby brother and tried to kill his sister too, with Wood always trying to save her and completely freaked by the demon child Culkin. Amazing movie!
