htop shows 170Mb(!) RAM used in total(40mb by firefox btw). Swap is at zero mb.
When youre running Vista, it might take 512Ram as such, but pay attention to swap usage-> it would be around 1.5Gb. So 2Gb in total. Compare that to 0.16Gb...
Get any xfce distro and test it via desktop install (xubuntu or such).

The thing is that Apple builds their OS's for specs that they create. They know how their OS will run on Mac's, and just focus towards that. Microsoft can only test it on so many computers.
right now I'm using windows 7 beta (build 7000) in my samsung NC10, and I'm impressed, this windows feel a lot lighter that vista and at the same time look very similar with a bunch of new features, I think microsoft has a winner with windows 7

Installing Ubuntu (7.10) made me realise just how good Windows is. For example. You don't need a degree in computer science to install drivers that normally take a few mins on Windows. I seem to have to use the command prompt all the time to get anything to work in Ubuntu, which is a big fat "Fail".
Usually the lates version is the better (Windows makes exception) so 7.10 if of course worse than 8.04 were all drivers are installed along with OS. After install you hava a ready-to-use computer. You can't say that a OS is not good because you're not smart enough to use it.
What I was saying about Ubuntu is that, the reason why it will not gain that much market share against windows is that it isn't as user friendly as windows.

Vista was like an idiotic version of xp. they didn't change much. 7 is far better in features, ease of use, and gui (graphical user interface). default programs are more featured and easier to use.

After XP, vista was the biggest fail. If they fail at this too, Microsoft officially becomes worse than apple. haha. Only with crysis. lmfao. The thing is that Apple builds their OS's for specs that they create. They know how their OS will run on Mac's, and just focus towards that. Microsoft can only test it on so many computers.

right now I'm using windows 7 beta (build 7000) in my samsung NC10, and I'm impressed, this windows feel a lot lighter that vista and at the same time look very similar with a bunch of new features, I think microsoft has a winner with windows 7

right now Im running windows 7 on a samsung nc10 with a atom precossor @ 1.6ghz and 2gb DDR2, this a little weak hardware so this new version will run in amost any pc, visually is better than vista and the performance is close to xp, if you can install this beta version I will recommended, just remember this is a beta and there are no driver dedicated to this version, right now everything in my laptop work except the ethernet, this version is very good but is not perfect

depends what you download, a lot of people use it for illigal software downloading and movies music and they are the files that are most risky, if you are a general user its likely you wont ever get a serious virus

Installing Ubuntu (7.10) made me realise just how good Windows is. For example. You don't need a degree in computer science to install drivers that normally take a few mins on Windows. I seem to have to use the command prompt all the time to get anything to work in Ubuntu, which is a big fat "Fail".

Usually the lates version is the better (Windows makes exception) so 7.10 if of course worse than 8.04 were all drivers are installed along with OS. After install you hava a ready-to-use computer. You can't say that a OS is not good because you're not smart enough to use it.

I had such a bad expirience with trying to get drivers for ubuntu and then getting them to work was such a pain in the arse. I spent hours messing with the command prompt, in the end, I gave up and went back to windows, where installing drivers is easy.

If you say so... I like it more. I can copy paste windows viruses from a infected stick with no problem top send them elsewhere, since windows gets a blue-screen because of the viruses on the stick. Every time i need a program i look in the repositories and i find it, freeware with no annoying liscence needed. I can download the latest version of Ubuntu for free. Vista must be bought. Windows 7 must be bought.

You get more software for free than in Windows. + safety. I can access all Windows Data with a Live CD. Ubuntu recognises all Disk formats, for Mac and Windows too. Windows only FAT and NTFS. And Mac FAT, NTFS and other Mac formats.

Here's what I never understood about the "which gets more viruses".
I'm a PC user, running Windows. I haven't gotten a virus on my PC in, literally, years. Why? Common sense. Keep my protection updated, don't download and/or run dubious software, don't browse dubious websites... Easy. You could say more viruses are *created* for one OS over another, but that means nothing when the person using the OS employs a little common sense.

it's more user friendly, i'm using it right now. some of the features blew me away (esp the taskbar).
Vista was like an idiotic version of xp. they didn't change much. 7 is far better in features, ease of use, and gui (graphical user interface). default programs are more featured and easier to use.
