I remember that Nintendo Power front cover. My brother had that when he was playing Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (or it's japanese name, Dracula II: Noroi no Fuuin). I looked at it when I was a kid and I was not scared of it, honestly. But to think about it, Nintendo Power shouldn't put that on the front cover, though. And I think they missed Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo (lit. Castlevania X: Rondo of Blood). It was part of canon of the series and a prequel to SotN (I think). :/
I realy love castlevania but i realy think that they should go back to the old gameplay. No leveling up, no items but you and your whip, no map, no open worlds. Its not even castlevania now, its metroid. The original go right untill reaching the end was the best. symphony of the night mest it all up. Fuck you playstation.
to be honest after playing FF XIII I wont be running out to buy any more of them, they arent what they used to be either. Im not biased when it comes to consoles but I might be a bit when it comes to games. Lords of Shadow promises 20hrs of gameplay and challenges to rival even the first Castlevania game, will it live up to that? Probably not but if it comes close I will be happy with that. Hope the music in LOS will be as good if not better than the previous titles.
@Slevinkelevraable its a fantastic franchise of games which is filled with Monsters of Myth and Legend, whats not to like, its got an amazing concept and story which keeps bringing fans like us back again and again even if I feel like I wish I didnt bother spending so much on the X-Box live CV:HD which is a watered down game. If there is a franchise to geek out about this is it!
@Slevinkelevraable wow I cant believe i missed that, must be having a dumb day cos thats probably my second favourite game in the franchise, Draculas Curse being the first by the way. Yeah I know what you mean about the Purple demon which makes Dracula look like Gaibon's daddy. The second form in Curse of Darkness was cool but apart from that im not sure if I like any of his other second forms
@Slevinkelevraable RoB? you lost me there, there is no Castlevania game with RoB as the acronym unless you mention Belmonts revenge as Revenge of Belmont?
Game style must be the Metroidvania style which began with SOTN, I love the level up system and the layout but I shall always love the original game style just as I have since having the first game on the NES back in the 80's, im hoping that Lords of Shadow will be a great way to bring the franchise to a new life in 3D, yes all Castlevania fans will prefer 2D or 2.5D with these games but things sometimes need a good change, lets hope this is the 3D game the franchise deserves
@Slevinkelevraable I will tell you my most appealing and least appealing, Most is the way he looks in Symphony of the night, The white hair and goatee really makes him look more Masterfull in a way which im glad they brought back in several Castlevania games there after, least appealing is Simons quest where he just looked like Death for some strange reason but there were also some strange forms he seemed to have taken in a few of the games too like in CV3 with all the heads as his final form
@Slevinkelevraable im not really trying to correct either, just saying that the castle was always mentined as Draculas Castle in the games and not as Castlevania, yeah I can see what you mean about the title. Yeah its possible it can be but there was never evidence to support this apart from game titles is all im saying
@Slevinkelevraable yeah it was just crossed from Castle and Transylvania, the games real names where it was made were Demon Castle and Vampire Killer which the US and Europe changed, im just saying this as I have played every Castlevania game, apart from the Pachi slot and the newer arcade game and nowhere was it mentioned or called Castlevania apart from the game cover and Manual.
@Slevinkelevraable actually since your correcting someone I should say that Castlevania is just the name of the game franchise, The castle is never called this in the games, its just known as Draculas Castle!
I'm new to castlevania I played the original game on my m8s computer a month ago. (it was the 1st time I'd ever tried castlevania) and it blew me away. I know by todays standards it's graphics are terrible etc. but i just loved it even more for how retro and old- school it was. I was walkin around today n spotted order of eccleas for the DS at the amazin price of 9 Euros. So I bought it. I'd love to play the other, older ones.
I personally enjoyed Dracula X very much. While I do feel that IV was a superior game, I also feel that if X had been released first it would have been much more well-received.
I really enjoy the handheld games; OoE was excellent and while some purist dislike the new look in Chronicles I thought that was a step in the right direction for the series as a whole.
At its core, Castlevania is a guy armed with a whip trying to stop Dracula. There's only so much you can do with that premise.
and on this year Castlevania Lords Of Shadows will be the new game of this incredible saga.. and i hope the better.. until i have this game in my handsXD.. then... i can say and everyone our comments whit real razons..
Sure, I didn't even played it until the The Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP. But it doesn't mean it shouldn't have got at least a single mention in a retrospective.
I'm playing through the series done 1,2,3,4 and 1 and 2 on the Gameboy. Now playing through Harmony of Dissonance. Gonna stick to the timeline and when finished go back and do lament of innocence etc. Can't wait for Lords of Shadow it looks amazing!
Glad you're having fun with Castlevania. I don't know you personally, I'm just glad someone i enjoying Castlevania. I don't own the GB versions myself, though. :( BTW, I am also eagerly anticipating Lords Of Shadow.
@anupsanju Use a gameboy emulator on PC and play through parts 1 and 2 on the Gameboy. They're pretty damn hard but made easier due to save states. Finished Harmony of Dissonance a few days ago at the moment im playing through Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP, playing through the Remake and the Original Rondo of Blood before I move on to Symphony of the Night.
@PunisherSNS To be honest they are both 3D and they both dont hold up great, Lament of Innocence would be my suggestion due to it introducing how the mythology began with the Belmonts
Great retrospective. Sucks that they completely avoided having to say anything about the N64 Vanias. While the graphics may have left alot to be desired........anyone who played all the way through those games knows how underrated they were. A real blueprint for how to bring Castlevania into the 3rd dimension. All they lacked was a deep combat system and a proper visuals engine.
This is a very well done retrospective, you people did a very nice job. Although I feel you should've mentioned how Castlevania X is actually a SNES port of Rondo of Blood for the PC Engine. (I consider the original better but Castlevania X is still a classic as well if you ask me). Still, this is a very well done retrospective. Kudos! Anyways, thanks to this, you've just gotten me to subscribe to you! ;) Keep them coming.
We're glad you like this game. We have currently published every Castlevania game released on a system that we support. Be sure to check them all out!
I seriously love Castlevania, one of the greatest franchises I have ever played.
Also, if you guys at Gametap are metioning theese games, is it possible you could add in Super Castlevania IV, Dracula X, and Smphony of the Night to your games?
...and then Lords of Shadow happened. And it did just that.

When doing a retrospective you should look into the story of the series and not the games releases...
So you should have in fact reviewed Castlevania lament of innocence first since with the story its the oldest castlevania yet.

No Rondo of Blood reference? The most amazing classic 2D Castlevania game ever and the superior game when compared to the travesty that Dracula X is.
gaborsama 2 years ago
Dracula X is a great game when viewed alone, without comparing it to the awesome RoB.
I don't know why you guys insist on that. You lose the opportunity to enjoy a great SNES game. >.>
kasilbrazil03 2 years ago 8
Cause once you see it, you can't unsee it :) Why play a great game when you can play the greatest? (confirmed Western Virtual Console release).
Besides, I was just asking why there wasn't a single mention of Rondo of Blood, nothing else.
gaborsama 2 years ago
Well, in 1995 no one outside Japan could see the greatest, unfortunately.
We could only have fun with the Travesty.... that's why I respect it. :)
kasilbrazil03 2 years ago
Sure, I didn't even played it until the The Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP. But it doesn't mean it shouldn't have got at least a single mention in a retrospective.

hey, about DXC... besides Rondo, they didn't even mentioned it's remake too man, that's also lame cuz DXC got much more popular here in Ocident
