@brollytom ....yup.....40 out by fence 8.......15 got round I believe......so the remaining fences took out 11......health and safety would have a fit if this field ran today.....must have been quite a sight...........

In answer to Stevie's question, 42 horses started the 1928 race, but 66 started the following year. The reason Tipperary Tim had number 52 was that a lot of horses would have withdrawn after the numbers had been allocated.
Looking at Becher's Brook there, it's a wonder more horses didn't refuse. How many runners were there that day, I noticed Tipperary Tim was number 52!
-- winner was the only one to not suffer some sort of mishap in the race. Hard to believe that they waited more than 60 years to lessen the difficulty on Beecher's.

the 29 race was completely marred by two mass pile ups at 3 and 8, no less than 40 of the 66 had been eliminated after fence 8
