my understanding is in the original timeline, frog uses the masamune to defeat magus, taking his amulet given to him by schala as a present for queen leene, which gets handed down to marle and still has schala's essence in it allowing the people to travel time, but my question it how did the masamune wind up broken when marle got thrown into the middle ages? any ideas?

@reillo9 I don't think we really know how history was supposed to be before Marle was pulled through the gate. My theory was that originally Magus was defeated by Cyrus. However, when Marle went through the gate every point in history where Crono and the others appeared immediately changed because of the course of action they would take. Keep in mind that seems to be the gate that appears when the group interrupts Magus's summoning of Lavos that allows him to go back to his own time in Zeal.

Since he has interacting with his mother and sister it's pretty likely that he has interacted with his past self as well. I think at some point he realized that the he was the Prophet himself, after all Magus does cast aside that disguise to challenge Lavos, and as intelligent as Magus seems to be I don't think he'd fail to realize how much he resembled the Prophet later

@reillo9 (part 3)I think he saw that he would face Lavos as an adult and be defeated, and knowing this once he realized was the Prophet he was able to prepare better, or at least attempt to, in the hopes of being stronger than his adult self was when the encounter with Lavos happened. As a result I think that he did become stronger, and was more powerful when he faced Cyrus in this new timeline, and therefore was strong enough of to break the Masamune and kill Cryus, when originally he wasn't

I guess in short you could sort of say as soon as the gate appeared everything changed at once, so he knew from the beginning he'd be defeated, causing him to get stronger faster in hopes of avoiding the future he saw as a child. Here's something I bet some people didn't know, Most of the stuff in chrono Trigger, was originally meant to be in FFVII (alot of the ideas I mean) But they decided to make a new game with those ideas, because FFVII was going to be made for the PS1 instead of the SNES which they also originally planned. So they had to change some of their ideas. Good job they kept their original ideas to make a new game though eh? :)
