  • 6:05 we can see an instance of /etc/security/limits.conf

  • Thanks jkymarsh, your tutorials are awesome. but can you make a video for windows? peace!

  • @ytlovening JACK is primarily for Linux, although I heard that a Windows version exists. You can always use AISO.

  • i need some help...if i install jack control the sound on my PC dies, someone can help me? i'm running on ubuntu 10.10..i've tried many tutorials found on internet but i can't get out of this...

  • @xXxCrossoveRxXx It's because JACK conflicts the default audio daemon for GNOME, pulseaudio. Partial solution is to "pkill pulseaudio" after finishing with any advanced musicmaking, which will restore desktop audio. I'm sure there's a way to bypass pa completely, but I haven't tried it.

  • Hey, Can I setup a MIDI transfer via a JACK cable?

Simple graphical explanation (the best I could do):

    [Keyboard]---(JACK)---[PC(Rosegarden/LMMS)]

  • This is an excellent video tutorial. Well presented and very professional.

  • cant get this to work windows 7. trying to sample in my maschine

  • @gmotif6 This is a linux tutorial.

  • im getting jackaudio driver:: processAsync:read error, skip cycle

when it comes up it screws up the audio.... any ideas on a possible solutions.

im basically a n00b so laymens terms would be appreciated

  • @Ccffect A lot of server socket errors come from one of two things: 1.) Another program playing audio is open when you start JACK. CLOSE ALL OF THESE PROGRAMS FIRST! 2.) You installed the wrong version of JACK, such as JACKDMP or have overlapping JACK/JACK2 installs. Try reinstalling JACK from a legitimate repository, don't try compiling it yourself or any weird shit.

  • @jkymarsh : Hello, I have the same problem as Ccffect posted above this saying Jack server is not running or cannot be started. So, i checked if i had JackDMP or Jack /Jack2 overlapping and none of them are happening. But i do know it worked when i first mounted Ubuntu 9.10 but i messed with jack configuration do to having only 512 of RamBus old expensive ram memory ! (wont buy more than that ) way too expensive !

It run when i had 256mb and later on did not. Now i upgraded to 512mb & no luck !

  • I'm curious... does anyone know if I could use JACK to emulate a LineOut for audio capture on sound cards that don't allow capture? Or am I misunderstanding its functionality?

  • @aarsho That wouldn't be possible unless the sound source (web browser, media player, etc.) had a JACK extension to act as a routing source. Also, it's unnecessary; PulseAudio allows for audio capture on all sound cards natively. There's no such thing as an audio card that "doesn't allow capture." Just gotta do a little tweaking in PulseAudio preferences to get the option to show up.

  • @jkymarsh Good to know, thanks. I'll have to look into that.

  • I just installed "jack control". When I start in the message box the last line reads:

Cannot lock down memory area (Cannot allocate memory).

The RT light flashes with a decimal number in front of it.

The setup looks just like your video.

    Why it cannot allocate memory?

  • Thanks for the upload. Got the rt light blinking. now time to sort though my latency issues.

  • does it work for adobe audition?

  • @lizaola510 Not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if JACK/WINE will allow Audition to work under linux? Never tried it myself. Make sure the newest WINE is installed and give it a shot. Use a Portable version of Audition if you can find one.

  • Excellent video.. the best I have found on this subject . 5/5 Thanks

  • I get a sever clinet error?

  • Can i usa JACK to connect Skype and Flash? instead of Skype and a microphone? thanks.

  • @tyrlop What? I don't understand. You MAY be able to use Skype through JACK's routing system, but why/how do you propose to use Flash to do the same?

  • @jkymarsh so instead of the sound going from the microphone when i call it comes from a youtube for example

  • @tyrlop I'm sorry, I guess I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish.

You can record the audio from a youtube video simply using PulseAudio, you actually don't need JACK at all to do that. I'd be happy to explain how to do that, if you need.

  • @jkymarsh I think i managed to do it, i turned on pulseaudio, and my sound from the computer is being prodcasted whenever i call. but i was not successfull enough i dont know how to turn the volume up

  • Thx man!! :D

  • Wonderful tutorial,

  • ey! cool tutorial ! thnks, i was just wondering how do u manage to record your voice while turning on and off jack... i suppose you are not in the same computer?¿... do u know some way to record the youtube audio output using jack? thanks again :)

  • @Sebuky I'm using Audacity, and NOT using the JACK driver (just ALSA). Since it's a different driver, it doesn't interfere with JACK being turned on and off.

What do you mean by "record the youtube audio output using JACK?" You mean how to record the audio (stereo mix) of a youtube video that's playing on your computer? If so, look into the Firefox add-on DownloadHelper; makes that a LOT easier.

  • awesome possum

  • good stuff man!

  • Great Tutorial..it worked for MEPIS (Debian) as well, at least it looks like it's I it's going to.

I have my control center back, thanks to your explaintion of qjackctl, which was not installing for some reason.

I just did a separate look for that file and now everything looks ready to go.

Thanks for the linux tutorials, these are hard to find.

  • Thank you for the tutorials, it's hard to find info like this that is comprehensible for beginners in Linux. I've been having a problem though, ever since setting up realtime audio as shown in your previous tutorial, JACK completely freezes up when I try to open it. What do you think might be causing this?

  • Just to add-- sometimes it doesn't freeze, but it still crashes and I get the following message:

    killall jackd

    JACK has crashed

    jackd: no process found

  • @lewiskrauthamer Are you trying to open JACK via CLI using "jackd" or the actual Qjackctl GUI? Try opening Qjackctl from a command line and see if it gives any errors... I'd say there's a good chance you simply need to completely purge JACK and reinstall it from apt-get/Synaptic. I had that issue once when I had both JACK1 and JACK2 installed on top of each other.

  • @jkymarsh Thanks so much for the reply. That could very well be the problem, I'll try that out!

  • Cool thanks yeah it works. I'm just trying to get Hydrogen working now. I don't have any sound output from it. Using Linux for audio is a big jump from Windows.

  • @pooh1234567890 Make sure you're using JACK as your driver from within Hydrogen. From there, it's just a matter of making sure JACK is open and running, and playing around with the patchbay/connections in JACK to route the audio from Hyodrogen either to your output or into another program for recording!

  • Cheers for any help you are able to give. Is there a good site to check out for more info cheers.

  • the playback device "hw:0" is already in use. Please stop the application using it and run JACK again

    cannot load driver module alsa

    23:41:04.720 JACK was stopped successfully.

    23:41:04.720 Post-shutdown script...

    23:41:04.721 killall jackd

    jackd: no process found

    23:41:05.136 Post-shutdown script terminated with exit status=256.

23:41:06.778 Could not connect to JACK server as client. - Overall operation failed. - Unable to connect to server. Please check the messages window for more info.

  • Hi Cheers for the videos, documentation on JACK seems to be difficult to find. I am new to linux and I'm having problems starting up jack. When i open it up any other audio cuts out, e.g. your video for example. Also when I start it I get an error message

  • @pooh1234567890 Thanks for watching! The reason other audio cuts out when you initialize JACK is because JACK takes complete control of your audio subsystem. This means that you MUST NOT be using any other applications that use your audio while JACK is open and running.

If you close all your other programs using audio (including web browsers), JACK should open and start just fine!
