The Rock was guest referee, special enforcer and guest commentator whilst wearing sunglasses and shoes with no grip all in a title match. John Cena on the other hand can barely throw a sentence together.
For the idiots who say the rocks ring ability is average... It's sports entertainment for a reason, to entertain, the reason the attitude era was sooo successful, all they have these days is the same wrestlers every week in the same matches, no gimmicks, no catchphrases to get the crowd involved, no hardcore matches, no exploding buses, no beer trucks, no soul, no nothing, its seriously gone downhill.
Just watched Raw from last night, and the comments were comparing Cena to the attitude era guest refs. I pointed them out to this shit. THIS is atti....IT DOESN"T MATTER WHAT ERA IT WAS. IT WAS THE ROCK.
Its bullshit that Davey Boy Smith NEVER got a single WWE title reign throughout his WWE career, I'm a fan of The Rock as much as the next guy but Bulldog shoudve been champion around this time. Vince McMahon is a dick to British wrestlers....
@superrobz He did have an Intercontinental Title reign as well as a European title. To be honest, though, at no point in his career you could you justify him as being the World Champ and point at him and say "He's a top guy." Sure, he was over. So was Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and I don't think anyone is going to argue that HE deserved a World Championship reign.
@MmmmmPopTarts yeah i know he did (I was actually there at SummerSlam 92 during his match with Bret), BUT with that being said he was every bit the main eventer as HHH/Rock were. You have to remember HHH & Rock didnt really come into the buisness untill the mid 90's &didn't really start main eventing untill around 1999. Davey was in the WWF a lot longer than the both of them, so he had plenty of time to work his way up the ladder and could've easily been main eventing during the mid/late 90's
@superrobz Davey Boy wasn't exclusively in the WWF for the entire time period, remember. After his second WWF stint ended in 1992, he went to WCW and then independents for a couple of years before coming back to the WWF for two years...and then left again after the Montreal Screwjob for WCW again before coming BACK to the WWF in 1999. Now, I can see him maybe getting a title in that second stint once he turned heel, but it wasn't exactly a huge shock when it didn't happen, you know?
@MmmmmPopTarts I know he didn't, but at the same time lots of wrestlers tend to do that (look at the teams such The Road Warriors & wrestlers like Curt Hennig & Dustin Runnels) . I just think Davey had had more than enough time to prove himself a "top guy" & already showed he could run with guys like HBK & Bret in the early/mid 90's & Rock/Austin/HHH during his final run in 1999. The same could be said for William Regal he could've also been a great main eventer if they'd let him
@superrobz what really held bulldog back was mic skills. Nobody can deny he's one of the best in ring performers ever, end of story. But his mic skills were awful.
@rnjblast773 True, BUT with that said you don't always need great mic skills to succeed. Look at wrestlers like Bret Hart (who is one of the best in the business...but he was horrible on the mic), Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior & so on. All those guys didn't do so well on the mic but they became major players in WWE & WCW. Personally speaking as a UK wrestling fan I just feel Vince/WWE is just biased to English wrestlers, he held back Bulldog, William Regal, Paul Burchill & now Wade Barrett.
@superrobz i don't think it's that. I mean bret was canadian and his mic skills were better than bulldogs. Hogan and warrior couldn't put together a credible sentence but they had tons of charisma. If bulldog ha come along in the 70's we'd be looking at him as the best ever. But because he come on the scene at a point in time where mic skills and charisma were a big deal it just didn't work. I do think eventually there gonna do some really big things with barrett and mcintyre though.
@rnjblast773 Well I dont know about that, I think its just because Davey had such a thick Lancashire accent that American audiences found it hard to understand him. Thats usually the way though in pro wrestling, you're either great in the ring with no mic skills (i.e Bret Hart, John Morrison, Billy Gunn,) OR average in the ring with great mic skills (Road Dogg, Rock, Miz etc..) I really hope they do end up doing something with Barrett/McIntyre though its way overdue.
@superrobz Do my eyes deceive me!? You say the Rock was average in the ring? Seriously? He sold moves, he pumped the crowd and did you see that peoples elbow!?
@rrwryan Yeah because he was. Yes he was one of (if not the most) charismatic superstars of all time and there'll never be another Rock without question, BUT he was average when it came to being in the ring ability wise compared to the likes of Curt Hennig/Bret & Owen Hart, Guerrero, Chris Benoit & so on thats all.
@younghov4u Maybe because they were? He was one of the biggest stars of the late 90's of course he was, but his ring skills were average at best. It's the same way Bret Hart & Chris Benoit had pretty no mic skills or charisma but were both phenomenal in the ring.
im watching this and im wondering what happened to wrestling today...i mean 4 guys are thirsty for that championship and would destroy each other just to get their hands on it...now all u see is cena orton and triple h in any ppv for the title...so sad
I totally agree... A classy segment... I look at this and wonder why we dont have segments like these... I firmly believe this segment wud come under the so called "PG" ratings and kids wont be offended... It's sad that guys like kane who struck fear in the old WWF days are barely used these days... DX, being the pranksters, can be made to do a segment like this... But one cant match to the rock n the rattle snake...
