I was born and raised in Rockaway, grew up on 112th Street. I have fond memories of Playland, Martin's Corner, the band concert at St John's Home for Boys followed by the fireworks every Wednesday night during the summer, the penny arcades that once were, the concession stands that once were. The DFDs. It was once a great place.
I lived in rockaway for 15 years. At this time it is currently a world of shit to live in. Even in those 15 years I lived in it. I could have never amagined how nice it used to be when I saw this video. Wow perhaps I should show some more respect to a place like that in which I lived for 15 years.
This is the first time that I have seen this video. I graduated from Far Rockaway High School in 1971. I lived on Beach 27th street right off of Seagirt Blvd, then moved to Wavecrest on Bch 19th Street. Thank you for the memories and the song and pictures. They brought up alot of lost memoreis.
I really enjoyed your video of Rockaway. I was one of those kids from Manhattan who came to the beach to spend the summers, and to paint beach shells, ride my bicycle on the boardwalk, and play Skeeball at Jack and Lenny's. I now live in California, and the beach is quite lovely, but they will never compare to the memories of those halcyon days spent at Rockaway. Thanks for helping me remember exactly what it looked like.
My parents were summer renters and I used to love taking a morning ride on my bike up and down that boardwalk. And those old bungalows that were particular to the blocks right before the beach. Great photos...oh and your song is growing on me.
Very well done, nice song, too. This kind of decline is happening all over the country. To me, it proves the nation is slipping away. The very best of America is now a lost world.
WAT THEY NEED TO DO IS BUILD A OFF ROADING RING OR SOMETHING WITH ALL THIS LAND THEYY HAVE FREE THERES LIKE AT LEAST 90 PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN ROCKAWAY WITH DIRTBIKES ATV'S AND SUCH AND ALL YOU SEE IS COPS CHASING AFTER PEOPLE LIKE REALLY STOP YOU ARE NOT GOIN TO CATCH DEM THEY HAVE OFF ROADIN VEICHELS SO DO US ALL A FAVOR AND JUST HOW YOU BULT THAT SKATE PARK DOWN ON 92ND BUILD US AN OFF ROADING CIRCUIT ITS NOT EXPENSIVE AT ALL ALL U HAVE TO DO IS MOVE DIRT AROUND AND MAKE A COUPLE OF JUMPS! THANx
YES...I don't remember the name...but the back of the theatre was covered with a canvas/tent like roof that was opened on clear nights in the summer..
I absolutely agree...summers at Rockaway, what could be better?!
And I like keeping it all as I remember. I didn't live far from that arcade on B 35th. We were on B 43/44. It's where I did my first "spin-art" and perfected skee-ball.
It's utterly gutwrenching, the realization that this wonderful way of life no longer exists. That we've now become a nation without foundation, without hope or future.
These images, as wonderful as they might be, are like arrows through the heart.
I spent the loveliest summers of my life at Rockaway Beach in the 1950s. I was on Beach 71st Street, on the beach block. But I remember the tuckee cup place on the Boardwalk around 35th Street--the chow mein was served in a noodle bowl and eaten with a wooden fork. Yum! I would love to taste that again. Thank you so much for the wonderful trip back.
Does anyone remember Curley's Atlas hotel?...I used to be on the boardwalk and may have burned down a long time ago...We used to visit it in the early to mid 50's....There was a penny arcade across the street.
I remember my mom loved 'takee cup', which was chow mein in a pastry shell, so the whole family would go to the boardwalk so mom could have her pleasure. Jeff Gaines class of 65 that's if they would have let me graduate in 65, which they didn't. I was bad.
Rockaway is a peninsula that is still GREAT. Essentially it has NOT changed.....beach, sand, sky, surf, sunsets, salt air....still there...

We've got Mayor Lindsay to thank for the loss of our beloved Rockaway . What he did was a sin. Like Hiroshima after the bomb from 35 St. to 73 St.

I really wish that they would take interest in fixing up the beach. It has so much potential to be beautiful again.

Summers as a child at Rockaway, what could be better?
Great film, I'm crying!
I do wish those people who live there now could have had what we had!
It was so great then--full of fun.
Things change sadly. But thanks for giving us this beautiful video, thanks for the memories!

I know what you mean...but rather than an arrow thru the heart what I feel is a sense of loss..

Didn't Curley's have caged birds singing at the hotel entrance on the boardwalk?

anyone from Rockaway remember when the beach at 121st was only like 50ft from boards to water? Before they dredged in the late 70's.
