@FreaknJoshwa Try out a Pentax K-x! Plenty of room to grow and a great community behind it. It shoots 720p, but it has a focus on photography over videos. And it's pretty cheap.

I recently got a Nikon D3000 camera after having an Olympus. I like the Nikon better because it is easier to use and takes better pictures. I used to have an old Canon, but from what i remember it was not as easy to use as my Nikon.

A cheapo point and shoot Fuji, good optical zoom but as its autofocus I tend to take a few pics in case. Runs on AAs though so I can take a bunch of rechargeable batteries and use it all day.

When I get some spare cash I'll invest in a decent DSLR and lenses.

For recording video I use Flip because it's the one my step dad gave me (I get all his electronic hand-me-downs which isn't too bad because he's a nerd and likes to get the new stuff) and for pictures I use either my phone cuz it's handy or my Canon PowerShot SD1400JS because it takes GREAT pictures for a relatively cheap Wal-Mart camera :D

Pentax K-x. Love it dearly. Best low-end DSLR feature wise without a doubt. Fully backwards compatible so you can easily use those old Pentax SLR primes, and Pentax has the greatest third party forums around (IMHO xD). I'm new to the DSLR scene, but I would recommend Pentax to anyone looking for an upgrade from a P&S.

@Haakonprell If you want it for video I would look at a cheaper Canon such as the Canon T3i or 60D, if you want it for pictures you are going to have to take a close look at the features and compare them, if you want it for both probably the Canon 7D but I don't know much about the D700 other than Nikon is still WAY behind in the HD Video department.

I have a Sanyo Xacti CG10 because someone i used to watch on youtube did a video promoting the xacti and i looked into it for myself. it has full HD pictures and video and both are equally excellent. it fits in my pocket (this was pre-flip), but my only complaint is that it takes a few seconds to turn on so i can't use it when something suddenly happens that needs to be captured (i use the iphone for that)

@DJMonopoli To be fair even though the Fujifilm is just a Compact not a DSLR it takes better pictures than some dlsr's so i would rather use that than most other cameras and the Pocket camcorder is ok at videos but its got bad audio so its alright for general use but not really for major video work

I think it's like the PC vs Mac war; if you've always owned a mac you will say that macs are better and if you've always owned a PC you'll say they are better... But, I know that canon lens are very good (nikon are probably too). Btw I have a Canon Rebel Xsi (so I don't have video option). ;)
