still loud hondas are goog and quiet but dont really push the watts they say these are loud unfortunatley but they run 4 ever and actually push a little more watts than advertised on thee usa products
a car muffler wont do a thing as you have found out lol try a motorcycle muffler for a 4 stroke 100 to 200cc bike that should give you enough back pressure and quiet it down a lot
i tried to do the same thing to a big generator but it didnt turn out as quiet as i would have expected or wanted. One thing you could do from here is look for rock wool insulation can be bought at lowes online which can withstand 2200 degrees and is water proof. I also live in La. and know about hurricanes like Katrina. I bought two honda eu2000i and converted them both to low pressure propane and natural gas, ask for tri fuel which keeps gasonline. company is uscarb.com 1 800 553 5608
There's not much that can be done to reduce the noise of these generators or else the manufacturer would have done it. Just buy a 3,000 watt Honda inverter generator or a 1,800 RPM diesel generator and that will solve the problem. (Of course it will costs you thousands of dollars vs. hundreds for the noisy generator but hey - it's only money).
Generator is running very fast there, maybe you need maximum output, there's a screw under edge of tank to lower it, I find that the bore of car exhausts if (obviously) far too big on a 200cc generator (don't know what yours is) you only need a 1/2 inch or so hole, doesn't affect running as long as you don't go tiny, I often do it on generators.

The one thing I never liked about Tecumseh engines. Tecumseh two cycles are quieter lol.

@GGGRRiny loud because it's a solid lift cam setup. An OHV engine would quieten it some

This is why I believe in Honda generators...... Way quieter and way more reliable.
You get what you pay for.

You can buy thermal exhaust wrap from the auto store and wrap that exhaust line then do the rock wool insulation around it.
