I'm all for freedom of speech, but I don't consider hate speech as freedom of speech. Ann Coulter has a history of hate speech which I do not think should be permitted here in Canada. If she wants to express her opinions without spreading hate, as much as I would disagree with here positions, I think she has the right to express them. I don't think her comments at Western helped the situation any either, so yes she is to blame in part for some of the outrage seen in Ottawa.

@vnorthru freedom of speech is not designed to protect kind speech. Kind speech does not need protection. It is designed to protect all speech including that which you might think is unacceptable. Your opionion doesn't matter. If it did then it would be no different than if someone else deemed your speech unacceptable

I agree that freedom of speech is there to protect controversial speech and I'm not opposed to controversial speech, I'm opposed to hate speech. I will give there is a very fine line between the two but when you are attacking a group it is hate speech and that should not be protected by freedom of speech, voicing controversial opinions should be protected by freedom of speech.

As far as Ann Coulter goes, some of what she says, though I disagree with it, should be protected by freedom of speech, but she has been known to cross the line into hate speech which is not protected by freedom of speech. I don't agree with silencing her, though if she crosses the line in Canada I would agree with her facing charges. As for UofO, her people canceled it not the university and so far all the reasons they gave for security were not substantiated. she silenced herself

And don't try telling me it's a choice, it has been shown to be genetic (and I am speaking as a geneticist) that is a multifactorial trait (means there are multiple loci as well as environmental conditions).

I hate to be the stick in the sand for you guys but Canada has laws against hate speech which is exaclty what Coulter is spreading. Do you agree that all Muslims should be banned from airports? I hope not. The flying carpet and camel comment was just plain rude and inappropriate. I don't get how so many people can side with such a prejudiced view.

@JosephPockaj I totally agree. I had a video up stating my view on Ann Coulter and why I did not want her at my school (I'm a uOttawa student) and you should have seen the hate I received. I ended up taking it down because it was so hurtful. Being called a left-wing fascist, stupid bitch who just wants to hear herself speak, hilter supporter, dimwitted 19yr old, all because I denounced racism. Thank you for having a brain.

Canada does NOT have laws against hate speech. The only laws against spoken or written comments are Slander and Defamation. Other than that, anything is fair game.

Muslims get away with inciting hatred and violence. I'll be you have no problems with that.

Actually, we do. Section 318 of the criminal code makes it an offence to advocate or promote genocide against an identifiable group.

@JosephPockaj - Freedom of Speech is not about being free to only say what the majority agrees with, it is about allowing people to express their opinions, even though some may find them offensive. Allowing someone to have their say is not the same as siding with them. I do not agree with Ann Coulter's opinions, I think she is a bigot and a brat. But, I want to know what my enemies are thinking, not shut them up. I do not allow Ann Coulter to do my thinking for me. Fascists shut people up.

@mikespulligan Yes, but these students pay tuition, so it's their university, and if they don't want someone there spreading hate speech, it's there choice. Ann could have stood on the sidewalk just off of campus and still gave her speech.

If I was a Muslim or black, or a Jew, etc, should I have to allow someone to come in my home and speak against my people and a hateful way?? We just don't condone hateful behavior in Canada, and the paying students spoke their minds

It's not their university, since it's taxpayer subsidised. That means the taxpayers own it. I'm surprised you mention muslims and jews in the same sentence, muslims are famous for hating jews, homosexuals, women, and anything that is not islam. "We just don't condone hateful behavior in Canada" is vague and meaningless. The law is more specific. You may not promote genocide and you may not incite others to hate. You are allowed to hate whatever you want and express that. We call it Free Speech.

the point in having apriori principles is to avoid "taking a side" as you put it. When you confuse standing up for universal principles with "taking a side" then implicitly you are "taking a side" and therefore abondoning the most basic element of fairness.
