To everyone saying 'Nooo, why did they do this?': it's because Green Day is pretentious, does not have any individual instrument skill, and even though their lyrics are shallow, they make teenagers feel deep and meaningful. You GD fans probably think they're in the same league as for instance Linkin Park and AC/DC, but they really really really aren't. They're in the same league as Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black; easy and repetitive music that only dumb teenagers like.

@Rattenhoofd i myself am a Green Day fan, and have been since i was a kid, and didnt even know what the hell music genres were, or what they looked like, but it does fucking piss me off to hear people say "OH THEYRE SO PUNK". no. Sex Pistols, The Ramones, bands like that are punk, so i get that frustration. but, at the same time, Green Day is one of the most famous american rock bands for a reason; tho their music may not appeal to u, it mean something to someone else, so what else rly matters?

Green Day knows it, they can play and write very beautiful musics, and you can't compare them to Linkin Park or others rock band because they're NOT rock, Green Day does ALTERNATIVE music.
