Your 8 core system has an issue that needs to be diagnosed. I am running a Dell-T-410 server, with ONE of two sockets used, a Xeon x5560 @2.80GHz -w- 6GB RAM, on a RedHat 2.6 64-bit kernel -w- JBoss 7.0.1 Final "ZAP" which started in 3394ms...that's faster than 3.5 seconds. If I had more RAM and both sockets filled, it would be half that.
@BlackSwanTactical by the way that CPU that I am using has only 4 cores on it. The backplane of my computer is pretty good. It can handle a much faster chip than what I purchased, 8 cores total, 64GB of RAM, and as many as 6 - two terabyte hot swap hard drives. I just don't have the money to buy all of the toys yet. Check in to a SERVER for a platform, they are much faster. This system as is was around $3,750+ from Dell.
