  • thank you! Nice tutorial.

  • WHAT. FUNKY SHIT

  • are these chords movable shapes? I'm pretty sure they are but just wanna be sure.

thanks a lot, another great lesson!

  • @VoodooChildJohn7

No, it's an E7#9 chord but you're thinking about an Em7 chord. They're not the same and there is a very audible difference. E7#9 is a major chord with the inflections of a minor chord making it sound rather dissonant (see Purple Haze for an example). Em7 is a just minor seventh chord. A E7#9 is composed of E, the root note, G#, the major third, D, the minor seventh, and G, the minor third. Em7 is E, G, and B, the perfect fifth, and D.

  • @psychoactivepaper your right. but what this guy says is the E9 chord is actualy the E7#9

  • ouch, that e9 with the ring finger barre is painful

  • wow that's quite the selection of pickups on that tele

  • This is funking awesome.

  • what the fuck is wrong with Youtube lately.. i can't even watch like 80% of the videos.. half aren't viewable in australia for some fucked up reason even if it's made in australia and the other half wont bloody load.. Youtube has turned to shit.

  • @asisorfree

    Julia Gillard.

  • NICE AXE!!!

  • Very nice playing and a very good lesson...thx mate!

    Also, a killer guitar sound!

  • where can i find "songs" or jams like the stuff justin plays at after saying take it away justin, its awesome!

  • @pumukellll listen to blood sugar sex magik by the red hot chili peppers its a really good album and its all funk basically... very good.

  • @zmaners96 will do it, thanks for the tip :D

  • You are my favourite Justin. Not like Bieber or Timberlake.

Nice playing, pretty crazy, I like it.

  • @BlankoTV What about Justin Eldridge?? He's cool too. The other Justins suck (not this one).

  • @hippieMANIAK You're right, I forgot him xD

  • And another question, the last chord he shows is the E7sus4, he says it can also be called an E11, but there is no 3rd in it.. so is the E11 a correct name for it? Not trying to be a stickler, I'm just trying to make sure I have the correct understanding

  • @BlueJimi1

I believe a sus4 chord implies there is no third. The notes kinda clash when put together in a chord.

  • @lajack07 that's correct. you move the 3rd up a semi-tone, making it a 4th instead :)

  • Another question, the E7 he shows at about 4:30 there is no 5th in it.. so can it still be called an E7? it only contains the 1,3, m7

  • why isn't the E9 called an E7add9? it's got the D in it, which is the minor 7th of the E, the note that is added to make a chord a 7. For example, when you sharpen the 9 its called an E7#9... why is the 7 not mentioned in this video?

  • It's really annoying that in the 2nd E9 chord my middle finger also bends when I bar the bottom 3 strings with my ringfinger, because then my D string gets blocked too.

  • Thanks Justin. You Rock!!!

  • Hi, im currently working on funk composition (i play a bit of guitar, but mainly drums). Being not very good at musical theory, im guessing by the root notes that these funk chords a re based in the key of "E major". Am i right? Could you tell me the key please?

  • @ChoppiProductions

yeah, thats basically what u need to know. E Major

  • @ChoppiProductions

That's not totally true. If thinking of them as major or minor helps you understand it better, more power to you. Funk chords are really neither major or minor.

They usually imply either a Mixolydian or Dorian mode. Modes kinda have to do with starting the major or minor scale from a different note. Maybe Wikipedia can explain it better and go more in depth than I can in 500 char or less. But again, if you understand it as major or minor, don't let me confuse you.

  • Thank you for the lesson!

  • "lotto people ossed me da do some lessons on some fuck gitta."

  • You talk like an old man

  • Nice... I liked the bit about the scale tones "under" the chord.... I just learned something new... after playing for too many years! Thanks!

  • @MrSevenpillars Yep, that scale bit was so ingenious! Thanks for pointing that out.

  • funk guitar playing is so cool

  • Comment removed

  • nice lesson man keep it up!

  • lol the beginning looks like he was put on fast forward

  • u just said fuck not funk

  • @niceboy129

  • Wow, i love fuck guitar!

  • @metalpunk654 fuck guitar...Haha !!!

  • @metalpunk654 lol.

  • dude why are you not famous! lol

  • the best teacher ever !

  • i love your videos but please get a better camera

  • good job explaining the variations on the 9th. Well paced, not to fast, not to slow. Your a good teacher, and i like to learn, I appreciate your lesson.

  • And Hendrix is the best forever. Truly is.

  • I hate when people refer to certain guitar players as gods. It's blasphemous to call someone Jesus and it's despicable and distasteful.

  • @Solus77 i think god and jesus are in everyone so i dont think it is despicable or distasteful

  • @sesspleftocore What the heck are you talking about?? That's a completely different matter, unrelated to what I had said. Whatever, I don't have time to write long replies. I was talking about something else and you didn't understand obviously. Peace!

  • @Solus77 those guitar players are more real than god, at least there's proof that they exist. They're not a fantastic excuse made by scared humans.

  • @boch100 For what we can account for, your "proof" that they exist is no more tangible than my saying that God exists. We are pitiful little beings whose arrogance surpasses comprehension. If you can satisfy yourself by not caring how we and everything else came into being, it's your own choice and you're entitled to it. Just don't come here and preach it to us like some smartass thinking you're smart and clever and the rest of us (try 98%) are "scared humans".

  • @boch100 I only said it's distasteful to call someone a god, even when one is not being serious. So take your philosophizing somewhere else and spare me these useless debates. I've seen it all a million times.

  • was there any point to that tasmanian devil at the end????

  • Funkeh XD ♫

  • Great!

  • i cant play 2nd version of E9!! my fingers SHOULD be able to!! ive played harder stuff in guitar for more than 6 years! any suggestions?

  • @ZapVaf I cant do E13 for nothin so I know how you feel =(

  • practicing :p

  • If you have really played for 6 years, then you already know the answer.

I have played for less than one, and I already know. practise!

  • Thank you so much for the funk lessons, mate! A real help. Excellent teaching style. Great player. Thanks again, now I'm gonna go get my nose back to the funkstone! [stole that line from flea-ha]

  • He's a pro dude

  • ur good at guitar

  • 1:01 - sick!

  • grazie mille!

  • One aspect a lot of teachers never mention is important ......That is the best sounding music is played unconsious in that you get an ace sound and once you start consciously thinking what your playing it falls apart...His right hand stums without change and the funk comes from playing the chord alternating with muting or chucking the chord..

  • can funk be played slower, justin has that sppeed nailed in him good job, your a versatile guitarist, some ppl underestimate you as a guitar player great job!:D

  • he's even got not enough time to talk slow man......

  • very useful thanks!! i learned funky rythm and chords thanks to you.

  • Thanks

  • WOOD WOOD WOOD! your guitar has great acoustics quality and resonance!!!

  • man your the best teacher on the net. thanks-matt

  • ...so?

  • I LIKE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • E9 is the first chord in Funky Crime

E13 is like the 3rd chord in Aeroplane, and E7sus4 (E11) is in the Aeroplane intro as well...

I could be wrong, this is just by listening, it sounds familiar...

(Both by Red Hot Chili Peppers btw)

  • great videos justin! very educational tahnks :D may I ask you what gauge d you use? greetings from barcelona

  • lol wtf is up wif da ending

  • ahahaha ur kool

  • thank you so much...your teaching is so comprehendible...i will run through all of your lessons.GOD bless you and more power....

    jac

  • "that kind of thing" lol

  • good lesson, thanx 4 sharing it

  • damn calm down

  • yeah.... you're wrong

  • you obviously know NOTHING about guitars.

  • hendrix chord

  • that chord was used in purple haze . also in redhot chili peppers under the bridge. sounds best with funk though

  • Frusciante did not play on the Airplane album. thats Navarro.

  • @bladibla06070 are you mad ? Hendrix is a legend because he was inovative, John Frusciante is just a good guitarist but not more.

Actual Masters are Ron thal, Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth, and many many others ! Those guys have reached a level that maybe 1% of the musicians are able to reach.

PLZ guys, stop the polemic about who is better just open your ears, your eyes, your soul, your mind, your heart, and play !

  • @NAThan9871 i believe tht frusciante is a legend too but i wont force u the think the same way i do but i never said tht he is better than hendrix. he himself doesnt even think so ;)

  • @NAThan9871 Thal is boring. Maybe he's technically awesome but I just can't listen to his stuff. Henderson and Holdsworth are awesome, also Greg Howe.

  • @kaisariani

WTF??? It's his opinion...........and as you can see, also the opinion of 21 others

by the way......I'll be the nr. 22 blaspheme idiot, cause I think the same.

  • @kaisariani dude, stfu wiv ur jesus crap

  • that kind of thing! lol

  • hahahahahahahah

    lmao

  • hey man whats a good progression for funk? like a 1-4-5 useing 7th chords kinda thing? im more a blues guy but i love to combine the too (here im stuck useing e in this so woud i just move from the domenit e to....what im not sure the chord let alone if i should go to a major or minor? am i making sense at all lol)

  • Funk tends to stay on the 1 chord

  • but its sooo quality

  • justin, your lessons are amazing, i especially love your jazz chords lesson

  • tower of power is a amazing funk band...

have a look at "soul with a capital "S"" for example

james brown got really great songs to

    try "play that funky music"

    ;)

  • can someone post some funk artist - songs titles for me please, this sounds fantastic and I would love to try some songs out

  • old chili peppers, Sly and the family stone, James Brown, Psychodelic Zombiez, Tower of Power,

  • When you said take it away justin i was like, what a douche, and then you blew my mind with funk

  • of course, justin is amazing

  • the first one is Emaj7/b9/11(1,b2,3,4,(5),7)and you can let the 6 string ring out since its an E like jimi hendrix did it was one of his fav. chords i use it all the time if you figure out the E pentatonic scale add blue note you can go back and forth well just look up EasyChord 1.3a1 and ScaleTool download them free it will help a lot if your stuck and need help finding chords scales beleave me these lessons and songs become easy if you have these programs to use...and tell others

  • love that E9 jimi hendrix chord

  • jimi chord is a sharp 9

  • Hendrix's favorite chord was the E7#9, not the E9 chord

  • Beeeow weeew, funky right thar xD

  • Ouch. E13 breaks my fingers.

    :(

  • Thanks alot for these lessons.

I've recently broke my leg, so I'm stuck at home all day. This gives me something to do with my time.

  • Embrace da funk!

  • Beside the technique the funk must come out of the whole body I guess. Not that easy. Your funky playin' sounds really cool. Thanks for the great lesson.

  • is the part on the begining in speed up

  • no, he really can play that fast.

  • Another excellent lesson, every lesson is special and has something cool in it.

Thank you very much man, appreciate it

  • Thank you Justin! xxx

This sounds coooool I might try it!

    11 comment ooooh!

  • thanks nice lesson

  • Not trying to be a smartarus, just checking my understanding. I thought an 11th chord contained a dominant 7th and a sus4 didn't?

  • it's an E7sus4! J

  • Gotcha .. so the terms are interchangeable. E11 = E7sus4. I do struggle with the theory stuff and do appreciate the clarification.. thanks!

  • where DO your learn that stuff.. i dont even know what third of fifth means, wtf

  • learn some music theory....

  • :( where from? college? lol...

only place i can find, and i was seriously thinking about it...

  • no... books....go to justins website and he lists books like he recommends...when you practice playing guitar, it is useful to spend atleast 15 minutes learning about music theory...also follow through justins beginner course...i have my cousins take his beginners course b/c they want to learn guitar...it works...
