I love this song so much, haven't stopped singing it since I saw Andrew Lloyd Webber's birthday bash from Royal Albert Hall...Doe anyone know where I can buy this, I have tried for many years. I Think Lottie Mayer has a beautiful voice, this performance was magnificent and bone chilling for me.
Why oh why did she give up singing and lower herself to the point of utter embarrassment and become a presenter on Create and Craft and Ideal World? What a real pity. Gorgeous voice and gorgeous looking! Come back to singing Lottie!
I saw this special when it origionally aired and only ONE word comes to mind when I see and hear this brilliant performance by Lottie Mayor & Maestro Andrew Lloyd Webber and that word is.........Perfection.
Someone may have answered this already, but was this song done twice at the 50th birthday party? In the playlist here,Tina Arena sings this, but when I saw this on TV I remember this being sung by Lottie Mayor (whose rendition I enjoy much better).
@pursehappygal Yes, this song was sung twice in two different styles. It was sung at the begining of the show by Tina Arena as a poweful ballad, and as seen here by Lottie. Lottie sang it here as she sang it in the West End show, as Sir Lloyd Webber had intended. I agree with you, that Lottie's version was much nicer than Tina's.
@pmcmusik I think the idea is that "howl" is more passionate that in your case "sing" which is the point of the song. expressing and living the sentiment of the moment.
PS you can get better volume on the load provided by "catherinesjtu" titled "27-lottie mayor-whistle down the wind". this version of the song makes me feel like saying, "God bless..."
Tina was shouting at this concert. Lottie's tender lullaby approach is aptly soothing. Predictable perhaps, but quite beautiful. However, the volume on this load seems to be rather too low even at max - a technical fault?
This song is absolutely wonderful. I have the CD of the whole concert and it is simply superb. Wonderfully sung by Lottie. Tina Arena was allright but I prefer this version.
Agreed. Tina is ok, but this song was meant to be sung tenderly, not belted out with gusto. Enthusiasm is a good thing, but one must remember to balance it with the spirit of the song and the feelings it is meant to convey. Lottie did a much better job of it.
Absolutly love this version of this song, It's my all time favorite. Does anyone know where I can by this song? I have tried several different music stores, no luck
Wonderful! Absolutely love her!I Sung this to my now 11yr old son every night until he was in grade school. Such tender memories of time gone by. When he hears is now, he wonders why he knows it so well. <3
Does anyone know where i can find the script for whistle down the wind...l'm looking for a bit that says ' csn you keep a secret, a really big secret, you've got to....'
Tuttt2 Thanks for uploading the video. Is Lottie still singing at the West End or Broadway? Is she retired? She has really a nice crystal clear voice.
Unfortunately, Lottie is not performing at the moment, but I prefer to think she is "resting" rather than retired. There is hope that she may been seen in the West End again. She is currently doing some TV work here in the UK.
Hi Tibby. The song comes from the musical Whistle Down the Wind, by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman. It is one of my favourite ever musicals.
I'm sorry you are having trouble with the video, poppet! It is playing fine for me.
The lyrics for this song and the rest of the Whistle down the Wind musical were written by Jim Steinman, who wrote a lot of the Meatloaf tracks including Bat out of Hell.
This is one of those performances that makes you stop what you are doing and listen. Lottie makes you listen to every word. I think she is wonderful. Are there any more recordings of her singing? I would love to hear more.
I just love Lotties voice. It gives me goose bumps. Anyone who can sing like that should be on the West End stage. Why isnt she using that amazing voice anymore?
Thank you for uploading this. I haven't seen this in almost 10 years when it was aired on PBS and Lottie's performance is the one thing I remember from this special and has stuck with me ever since. I dloaded the audio years ago but seeing the video again is great.
I havnt seen this before im going to buy the dvd. i knew Lottie was a great singer cos i have her cd of the London cast whistle down the wind. She sings well amasing on that
It was recorded in April 1998 at the Royal Albert Hall. It was part of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday concert. Lottie has such a beautiful voice, I never tire of listening to her.
Tina Area also covered this song to great praise during the same concert. Frankly I think this version is far superior. Lottis voice is CRYSTAL clear. Very nice

Yeah I know. Tina's is too pop- not the style that works for such a sweet song. Also, Tina Arena looks like Debra from Everybody Loves Raymond.
