  • correct! In their college years, hootie and the blowfish were actually a 54-40 cover band

  • again with the mono audio????????????wtf???????

  • some people are just too stupid to admit their own ignorance!!! ignorance kills!

  • @izaakbenjamin WTH is "black music" ??????????????????? Darius Rucker has an AMAZING voice!!!!!! Both versions are awesome!! One has an 80's sound to it and one has a 90's sound to it! I like them both!!! :D

  • This song is awesome, and of course, is a 54-40 original! check out 5440forever and give us some love!

  • ever heard of stereo i only am hearing left speaker

  • @thedragonmusic88 Take the left earphone out, it plays in both. Sometimes that happens to me, when it's WAY stronger in one ear than the other

  • both are good but i prefer hootie

  • Just pulled out an old 54*40 tape I had in a box in the garage. This tape was a personal favorite found in the tape deck of my '74 Mustang in high school. That was back in '86-'88. Man how time flies! Of course my wife had no idea who they were...nor has anyone else except for you fine people on youtube.

  • Great song... too bad the audio quality of this post makes me want to shove flaming sticks into my ears...

  • @ghoekstra17 agreed I wish he's repost it!

  • Comment removed

  • Hootie sings it better, end of story.

  • @wrestlingluva No, they don't. End of story.

  • @LimeZYX Hootie puts passion behind it. They sing it blandly.

  • A true 54-40 classic ! 54-40 are Vancouver's treasure . But good cover by Hootie though.

  • Love the song, love 54-40. It's been years since I've seen them but they always put on a great show.

For those that think this is an original Hootie song you seriously need to have your heads examined because it's quite obvious that you do not possess a brain.

  • good grief, is someone actually suggesting this is a Blowfish song? They covered it – that's it. In fact I got dragged to a Blowfish concert in Vancouver and they played this song 'with" 5440 on stage as a tribute to 5440. I think time5440 must be playing around with his comments here – or he's an imbecile.

  • @artemis7114 look - there's no reason to call @tim5440 an imbecile. I have a lot of respect for him. It's just that he's dead wrong.

  • Great song, wanted to hear the original for a while.. Glad it's here!

  • @studmunson too bad this is the cover

  • @Izaacbenjamin: I'm actually agreeing with your position on this matter; I'm guessing you misread my intent....I know "this" (the video that is featured) is an original 54-40 song, and i prefer it over the Hootie remake, by a large margin...apologies for not making my point clearer....

  • @toch482 you obviously weren't paying attention. This is not the original - I can't comment on your preference for this substandard imitation

  • Anyone who would hear this objectively would say this is the original song...it's a good song, which is why Hootie and the others covered this song; they could not have written it...I'm sure if you read the cover notes, and notice the songwriters, you'll find the answer...

  • @toch482 How can you tell which one is the original just by listening to the music. Sure it sounds like a blunt, low-fi interpretation, but some songs are dressed up and improved when covered. Good thing the history is there. Hootie has been around for longer than most, and you listen yourself... the original is a masterpiece of writing, performing, producing and recording. Good work, 54-40, not taking anything away from your cover, but it pales by comparison.

  • @izaakbenjamin 54-40 wrote this song, it was covered by Hootie and the Blowfish

  • ya, this is an original song by 54-40. i heard that Nirvana really liked 54-40 and considered them one of their fav bands. pretty cool

  • @tim5440 - you're affiliated with the band, right? why is WMG still acting like asshats over licensing? one would think they would have relented by now.

  • +1 for this being the most heavily trolled video nobody under 25 years old has ever watched. See kids? You can grow up STILL BEING a massive douchebag!

  • Definately an awesome original, but can't say hootie did a bad job re-doing the song.

  • Check the ascap website. It shows the members of 54-40 as the writers and both bands as the performers of the song.

  • i've got no beef with hootie, but their fanboys need to stop coming on here to disrespect the original and SUPERIOR version of this song.

  • People doubt 54-40 wrote and recorded this song first? I lived in Canada at the time this song came out, recorded by 54-40 and I happened to be a fan of the band then and heard this. Definitely 1986. If you weren't there then you can't say you KNOW otherwise.

  • Hootie does it better in my opinion.

  • I can't believe they're from Tsawwassen. That's fucked hahahaha.

  • can someone please post the video for ''Walk In Line', by 54-40? According to Much Music ,at the time,it was filmed in a sheet metal shop in Vancouver!

  • this video sucks and this band chokes hooties dick i dont care who sang the original hootie sang it better

  • @Tap0uTguy hey - be nice. They are trying their best to do justice to the original.

  • Then stop looking for the Sun and mushroom clouds thru binoculars, Alice.

    LOL

Lick it...baby. Licky licky... hmmm... right here on my turned other cheek..

    :O !

  • Truly Canadian

  • I love how all of the people who are arguing that HABF originally wrote this song are not intelligent enough to simply go and look up the writing credits to the song.

    Songwriters: Comparelli, Phil;Merritt, Brad;Neudorf, D;Osborne, Neil

Oh but wait then they'd have to go over to wikipedia to see that these names are members of 54-40. It's just too much.

  • @weebs28 As I've said many times, wikipedia is not a definitive source - especially for controversial issues such as this. I am quite upset that you want to drag the name of Darius T Rucker throught the mud.

  • @izaakbenjamin

LOL thanks. I could always use a good chuckle. I wasn't sure if you were serious or not till that post. I can't complain though because i've been accused of being a troll in other forums.

  • boo boo likes this song

  • the hootie version of this song is played on radio so often that i'm sick of hearing it yet i'm dying to hear this version played because it never is... and i'm talking about CANADIAN radio here! TRAV-ES-TIE

  • Somewhere over there,there's a purpose! there's a care FOR FREE!

  • @izaakbenjamin obviously you are continuing just for attention. You cannot be that clueless in real life. Just remember the more you continue, the more idiotic you sound.

  • @tim5440 My apologies for the simpleton, sir. izaakbenjamin, you are absolutely incorrect...as in wrong. I bought this album (54-40) way back when it came out and, in fact, 54-40 can take full credit for this song. Neil Osbourne, the lead singer, wrote it and they put it on the album in 1986. I think Hootie and the Blowfish didn't cover this song until 1996. The best music of the late 80s through the 90s came from Canada and my hat is off to our northern neighbors!

  • @tim5440 I don't care. I believe the truth will prevail.

  • @izaakbenjamin 54-40 is the original, Hootie's version is a cover. Let it go Every 54-40 fan knows this information!! Only losers fight about it on youtube LOL

  • @izaakbenjamin ...because I work for the band and know them personally.

  • @izaakbenjamin - I hope you are joking... You could not be more wrong. 54-40 are the originators of this song. The song was recorded in 1986 and released that year on 54-40's "Green" album. Even the first 3 seconds of the video shows the year 1986. "Hootie" were fans of the band and later went on to cover this song. I cannot believe people still think this is not a 54-40 song!

  • @izaakbenjamin If you search "54-40" on iTunes you will see it. 54-40 has been around for 30 years now. It wasn't until around 95 when their cover of 54-40s song was made popular when it appeared on the "friends" sound track. They covered it. It is a well known fact....

  • @tim5440 So it's a well known fact because you say it is? What makes you such an expert?

  • @tim5440 a well-known fact because you say it is. Also, who cares if you work for some second-rate cover band from Canadia - this is probably a publicity stunt.

  • @tim5440 I believe you. I grew up here in Vermont, in the Lake Champlain Islands, where we (because of the Lake) could not only recieve Radio stations from NYC late at night but also far-away actual BBC from NOVA SCOTIA!!! We also had a local radio station down in Vergennes, VT, that put out alot of new, not-so-popular music...This is how I heard "WE BUILT THIS CITY" by GLASS TIGER, two years before JEFFERSON STARSHIP bought the rights to it and made it into a smash hit.

  • @Arthurianwarp What? We Built This City? Glass Tiger?

  • @cochranexyz glass tiger was amazing, lol thin red line and dont forget me and shit.

  • @SDCDIABLO Agreed! But "We Built This City"? They had a version of that song????

  • @cochranexyz oh did they? wasnt it originally by jefferson airplane or starship or whatever they became lol?

  • @SDCDIABLO Yeah, Jefferson Something or Other. I don't know where Arthurianwarp came up with Glass Tiger.... I mean, I'd be interested in hearing such a thing, but I can't find any verification of this.

  • @izaakbenjamin wow. Do you kiss your mother with that ignorant mouth of yours?

  • @shmoking28 no I kiss yours

  • @izaakbenjamin You can fuck off. Crawl back to the shithole you came from.

  • @cochranexyz Please keep the discussion civil. It goes a long ways towards supporting my argument when that's all you can come up with. Hootie is the original here.

  • @izaakbenjamin Civil? Go away and learn yerself izaakbenjamin. Hootie is a latecomer here....

  • @cochranexyz Thank you for not using expletives. I still, kindly disagree.

    Regards, Izaak

  • @izaakbenjamin Hootie credit the song to 54-40, both on their website and on the album, Scattered, Smothered and Covered. It certainly ain't a Hootie penned song.

  • @rickshaw180 I seriously doubt that Hootie would have foreseen 5440 covering it . I don't see why you all keep asserting that this amateur band has any connection with HATB besides covering their song.

  • @izaakbenjamin Couldn't be more obvious .... trolling.

LOL that so many actually fell for it and bothered to respond to your drivel.

  • @ch1nmuzak this isn't drivel - this is abou protecting the rights of the original creators.

  • @izaakbenjamin bahaha this guys a fucking moron, of course this song is 54-40's.

  • @izaakbenjamin Look up the song on wikipedia you clown if you think that hootie wrote the song.

  • @rrtodd95 as I've stated before - wikipedia is not an acceptable source for controversial topics - ANYONE can edit it anonymously

  • @izaakbenjamin Holy shit, what the hell would someone have to gain from that.

If you have the album from Hootie and The Blowfish supposedly wrote the song on, check the liner notes and check to see if Neil Osborne wrote the song.

Neil is the lead singer of 54-40

  • @rrtodd95 "supposedly wrote the song" ... are you mocking me? Seriously - you need to get a life.

  • @izaakbenjamin I need to get a life, you're claiming that someone is going to go onto wikipedia to alter information to steal a song writing credit and dates to back it up.

  • @rrtodd95 I give up - you're right.

  • @izaakbenjamin

Wutsa matta Izaak? You get on wikipedia start reading truth? You gonna call them anti-Semite too? You're a joke, Izaak. You're just mad 'cause you were born with a small penis.

  • @ballisticchops Maybe should retire from commenting on this thread. Is really you have to chase me to every video and insult me?

  • @izaakbenjamin

Meh, felt like picking on you, so I did. Your statement about wikipedia is absolute crap. BECAUSE it is user edited, it is the BEST source of info. If you want to go off topic in the thread, I can jump in and make you out to be the retarded Israeli you are. Cry more, biatch!

  • @ballisticchops this was civilized debate thread until you brought your barbarian comment

  • @izaakbenjamin

I'm a barbarian 'cause I believe in wikipedia? You are quite delusional...

  • @ballisticchops no you're barbarian of making ad hominem attacking to me.

  • @izaakbenjamin

Lolz, call me names all you want, nobody is coming to back you up. That's because you are ignorant and annoying. Have a nice day! =D

  • @ballisticchops I only call your comment barbarian, not you. I don't know you, thankfully.

  • @izaakbenjamin

Lolz, know me enough to post that crap on my stream? It all started 'cause you thought the stupid kids should be be able to spend Israeli money at Wal-Mart. You act high and mighty and self righteous in every post you make. You deserve the flames you will get from from me as long as you have your youtube account. I have a lot of fun making you angry. I am a troller of trolls. Enjoy! =]

  • @izaakbenjamin TROLLL! STFU

Here is another excellent one by 5440 (Ocean Pearl) and one by Hootie (Hold my Hand) Peace Luv and Happiness My Brothers :)

  • @izaakbenjamin You are such an ignorant dumbass. I bought 5440's album containing this song back in 86 when Hootie was still an embryonic formation. Give it a rest, do your research before you open your big mouth and make yourself seem even more foolish than you already are.

  • @izaakbenjamin You are such an ignorant dumbass! I bought the 5440 record that this song is on back in 87 when Hootie was still just an embryonic formation. Do your research before you open up your big mouth and make yourself look even more stupid than you already are.

  • @me66icat If Hootie was an embryonic formation in 1987, then he (Darius Rucker) is only 23 years old now. Fat chance. I checked - Darius is 54!

  • @izaakbenjamin The band was formed in 1986, which is what I was referring to when I stated it was in embryonic form. Anyway, I get the joke, izaakbejamin. Carry on.

  • @izaakbenjamin Sir and thank you. I am of the lower 48 and posses an original cassette off this band. I have been promoting them since 1984. I have, sincerely this, pushed to 2 people tonight their songs. Should I ask out of respct this but my co-worker and husband have a "hobby band" and I thought a few songs thay couldn't butcher.I type faster than my intellect or maybe not.

Darius, last I checked is trying to sell Legg's

Gotta sound check for that, peanut?

  • @bijgenaamd Maybe you aren't the best promote if Darius ended up selling cereal. But you are imagining. Also, I doubt you were promoting HATB in 1984 - they were almost completely independent at that time. Nice try.

  • @izaakbenjamin You are an idiot.

  • @izaakbenjamin Troll!

  • @izaakbenjamin you're like...really an idiot eh?

  • @izaakbenjamin You are way off!

  • @buzz851 show me the evidence

  • @izaakbenjamin This is the link for Hootie and the Blowfish itunes bio, it states there that this song is a 54-50 cover htt p://itunes. apple.com/ us/artist/hootie -the-blowfish/id204062? showBio=1. Just remove the blank spaces.

  • @buzz851 the link doesn't work

  • @izaakbenjamin Remove the 5 blank spaces that I inserted into the link then cut and paste into your navigation bar, If you cant handle that then go to Itunes and look up hootie and the blowfish bio. You can also do a basic google search and find these facts!

  • @buzz851 I don't need to do a google search. I WAS THERE. Maybe you need to take the word of someone who's lived a few years at face value. Back in the day when Hootie was on top of the charts, your metalheads from Canada were still playing fisher price xylophones - if you catch my retro toy reference, then maybe you should know better.

  • @izaakbenjamin I give-up, at least anyone else who reads this can check my links and see for themselves. All you have done is make light of Canadian bands without giving any info or proof to what you are saying.

  • @buzz851 make light of Canadian bands? I don't think this band represents Canada. Try Widemouth Mason, Rymes with Orange, Third Eye Blind, or Moist more like it. These guys are just another garage jam band as far as I'm concerned.

  • @izaakbenjamin Ok now you are showing more ignorance, third eye blind is a band out of San Fransisco. BTW I am a big fan of Widemouth mason and moist! Just keep posting more, everyone will see who is right!

  • @buzz851 Well I stand corrected. And I must compliment you on your taste. I somewhat agree. If I keep posting, everyone will have a chance to see who is right, but as they say, you can lead a horse to water...

  • @izaakbenjamin You really an unintelligent prick who can't pull their head out of their ass and use a little brains, if you honestly can't do a little research and see that 54-40 is both an older band than HATB and the original writers of this song, than i pity you

  • @Fiat5000 Wow. You get so rude. Insult are the last defense of the incorrect. I recommend you just read up on the history and then apologize and we can get on with it.

  • @izaakbenjamin Also on Itunes the songwriters listed are COMPARELLI, PHIL / NEUDORF, D / MERRITT, BRAD / OSBORNE, NEIL all members of 54-40, need more, I will find it!

  • It makes me laugh everytime I read anyone giving Hootie props for this song,

  • excellent band, beautiful music

  • Sorry folks. This song is a definitely a 54.40 song. I saw this video long before Hootie and the Blowfish even existed. Why do people insist on displaying their ignorance by pretending to know things that are false? Neil and the boys wrote this song and Darius and the boys covered it later. The Hootie version is good, but this is the original. Check your facts, people.

  • thumbs up if you saw these dudes at Tigertown Grey Cup 2010 they were toight!

  • This is a 5440 original. The lads out of Vancouver. Hootie's was a cover (not a bad one).

  • @tuberobert1 lead singer Neil Osborne is from Regina SASKIE PRIDE

  • @aprilwinerocks That's awesome!

  • Why Does it only come out of the left?

  • I'm going to have to fully support izaakbenjamin on this one.

    *the joke*

    .

    .

    .

    *your heads*

  • Theme song of NY Gov. Paterson

  • Hooties first album only came out in 94. If the souths education taught you how to read, you'd realize at the beggining of this video the copyright is 1986- the year hootie was formed.

Both versions are good but without this one you would not have hooties- learn to respect it.

  • Anybody that thinks this version is better than Hootie is either lying or just stupid.

  • @cincycap83

this version is alright - it's a matter of opinion, but it's just like all white covers of black innovators - Elvis Presley did it, Eminem did it, and now 5440 have done it. Of course, it's up to you whether you accept the cleaned up "white" version or listen to the original, sung by a black man. I'll leave you to guess which one is my choice.

  • I'm sorry. Hootie killed this song in their version. 54-40 just sound like they should be killed.

  • 54-40 however didn't even come close to reaching Hootie and the Blowfish 90s stardom.

  • Hootie sucks. 54-40 ROCKS.

  • ok - end of debate - this cover is moderately good version of the original, but HATBF will be remembered for posterity. OK?

  • @izaakbenjamin It's not a cover. This is the original. Go to wikipedia and read about it and you will see. Hootie covered it from them. Hootie's version is a big improvement vocally though.

  • @izaakbenjamin Fuck you, this is the original you moron!!

  • This version sucks. Some songs just shouldn't be cover because the vocals are not even close to Hootie and the Blowfish's. They were wrong for this one.

  • @reggie46404 dude... this is the original. Hooties is a cover.

  • @whatbuddywas If that is true then Hootie did it better that the creators.

  • @reggie46404 ugh wtf are you talking about Hootie covered this song, not the other way around. Don't be so hasty to say something that you aren't even enlightened in.

  • @benhoward1 Dude I left that comment a month ago. Piss off.

  • @reggie46404 sure thing

  • isaacbenjamin thinks he's some sort of comic troll genius with this weak ass schtick. Think of some new material you wanna be phil hendrie

  • I don't mind this cover version so much. I just can't abide all the disrespect to the amazing original version by Hootie.

  • I like singing this to my kids or at least when they were small, great tune. BTW, blurtulip326 and fucknametheives are right.

  • For all who are wondering who won this debate, I did. 54-40 did not write this song. Nor did Darrel Rucker. It was Hootie of HATBF. Check your sources.

  • @izaakbenjamin I think you mean DARIUS Rucker. And Darius WAS the lead singer of HATBF, but his nickname was not Hootie, that's just the name of the band. Also, 54-40 DID originally write this song, and HATBF covered it, according to Wikipedia. It says they used the royalties from HATBF's cover to build their own recording studio. What sources are you using? (Besides, kacronin resolved this debate six months ago already, look at the top rated comments.)

  • Comment removed

  • @izaakbenjamin Well who originally made this song. Hootie or 54-40?

  • @reggie46404 well a lot of people say it was 54-40, but I'm pretty sure Hootie wrote it - it sounds a bit like black music anyway.

  • @izaakbenjamin Black music? It sounds nothing like black music. It sounds like a little country but mostly rock. What is black music anyway. I never label music that way because now every race makes all music no one is limited to one genre. Dude that sounds ignorant and racist saying black music.

  • @reggie46404

Hootie has a black sound - in the tradition of black music greats like al green, muddy waters, bob dylan, and michael jackson, although MJ looked white, he still had that black sound.

  • @izaakbenjamin I know what he was talking about. I was just trying to give him shit about an obviously prejudice comment. It is obvious that they would have a black sound being that the lead singer is a black man. A black man singing rock music at that but they are a great band never the less. Why do people always feel the need to talk about Michael Jackson's skin color. Everyone already knew he had a skin disease. That did not make him any less black because of it. It is kind of ridiculous.

  • @izaakbenjamin You continually say that Hootie was the original, but then can you tell me why I saw 54-40 with Midnight Oil in 1990 and they sang this song??? Wow and if you look at who wrote the song on the Friends Soundtrack you will see that the coposer is NOT Darius Rucker it is Neil Osborne who is the lead singer of 54-40

  • @1kariberry

Sorry to offend - everyone is entitled to their opinion - the truth is relative, right? But I'm pretty sure that the Friends soundtrack is not the official source of this song. Darius Rucker wrote this back when he was still living in the ghetto with his momma.

  • @izaakbenjamin

Your an idiot. You have all this access to info at your fingertips, yet here you are making a fool of yourself. Whatever...

  • @Shirokinukatsukami

You're an idiot. At least i know how to spell "you're"

  • @izaakbenjamin

A minorspelling error on my part does not negate the sheer idiocy of your comments. Nice try. If all you can do is pick out spelling or grammatical errors, well i guess you need something eh? At the end of the day, you are a moron shooting off your mouth without checking YOU'RE facts, which is as easy to do as ever now with the net. How does it feel to be proven wrong over and over again?

  • @izaakbenjamin 54-40 did write this song.

  • My uncle was the drummer in the Northern Pikes @guinnesstrail

  • Hootie cannot hold 54-40's jockstrap.

  • @starjacqueline This band sounds like garbage. Why do you think they sound better than Hootie is beyond me. What is so special about them? They sound like they are singing through their noses. The only credit I will give them is their music sounds good and they play their instruments well but vocally they suck.

  • @starjacqueline It's the same song.

  • @starjacqueline - Who's "Hootie"?

  • @BayviewFinch i may be wrong but i think it is hootie and the blowfish

  • Bloody hell, either my right headphone blew, or the music is only on the left

  • @Trygyl Mine only comes out of the left to go to another song and it will work or it is blown

  • @Trygyl LOL i was thinking the same thing then i was reading posts and saw yourse ROFL Awesome sauce

  • @Trygyl thats why its sooo good just the right side of the brain can here it...the left side is STUPID !

  • Other than myself, does this song take anybody back to the 80's in British Columbia?

  • @Vauxhall94

as a Vancouverite is shure as heck does ! oh and as far as other bands from this era don't forget Spirit of the West too !

  • @jfalkins How could I forget?!? lol

  • I didn't even know Hooters and the Blowjobs did a cover of this until this zak moron popped out of the Earth's crust.

  • @nickopa

First of all - the term "mentally challenged" is not appropriate. Everyone is an individual and I think you are trying to insult me by saying that I am disabled, so shame on you. Second, Wikipedia is not a reliable source. You could have changed the details yourself to back up your prejudiced rhetoric.

  • @izaakbenjamin they DO check wikipedia. Dur.

  • @iheartlesbiantunafis

sorry to break your little fantasy, but "they" are "we" and "we" includes knuckledraggers lige nickopa
