@airognollongoria It is way to big compared with other filter holders but if it does the job so this unbelievable lens can be used with filters then its worth having.
@ndusty13 Sorry you can not get a Polariser for this they are not available in such a large size , although with lenses this wide a polariser would produce very patchy results so could better using ND grads instead.
We used a pre production unit for our video , working units come with one slot but can be fitted with a second if needed. Did you purchase it from Robert White ?
Does the filterholder works with the Sigma 12-24mm F4,5-5,6 EX DG / HSM lens too? The front part of the Sigma lens looks quite the same. Can you try it and post your experience. Thanks...
Btw I got the filter today after 4 month after ordering at robertwhite.co.uk
It's a shame Nikon didn't offer the a rear gelatin filter option. $450 is way too much for a filter system. Landscape/architect photogs now have an expensive option. Personally, I would just buy the 16-35VR. The 14-24 is a better lens but that big bulbous lens scares the bejesus out of me. I know it would get cracked within a month if I had it. Will be getting the 16-35VR instead. problem is it's heavy distortion in the 16mm which can be fixed with a simple slider in PS , which is a none issue.
I regret that I can see no way of fitting a big stopper to this holder.
The big stopper is 100x100mm and the SW holder takes a 150x150. in addition the front element of the 14-24 would not allow the big stopper to seal correctly
There is a noticeable gap between the glass and the filter holder. Wouldn't that let in stray light from the sides/top reflecting on the camera side of the filter?
A polarizer would be the reason why i would even consider this holder. A polarizer can be used for vertical shots where there's a lesser chance of getting uneven polarisation in the sky....or it can be used to avoid strong reflections on a watersurface. My guess is that a polarizer would be one of the most wanted filters.... instead of the most unpopular as stated before. Polarizer is the only filter i need...grads can be software generated by using layers from different exposures.
Thanks for the feedback, My guess is that because of the issue with wide angle...remember that this is 14mm that even modest problems with Polarisers would be an issue. a polariser will still give patchy results on an ultra wide lens weather used for reflection reduction or to increase saturation.
Whilst I am sure you are more that happy to cope with these issues I fear that the less experienced would feel very disappointed if it did not work correctly at all focal lengths.
You are correct when you say that at 14mm the effect of a polarizer could be patchy. But this Nikkor 14-24 mm2.8 G can also be used at longer focal lengts. I use this lens on a 5DmkII and i have been looking for a polarizer solution since i got it. The best option i have today is to get a Cokin X pro circ.polarizer (Diameter 130mm) and use it handheld for focal lengts 17mm and upwards. This would not be an easy to work with solution.. but its the only option i can think of
Really excited about this filter holder! There is a Cokin system out there for this lens but it is $600. Lee is speculating about $250 range and that includes a filter.
Yes, I know. The question is CAN you use 100mm filters, with a cardboard adapter or other, assuming you're putting this on a 17mm lens. For instance, Lee sells adapters that let you put a 3" filter in their 4" filter.
And I'd like to see this exact product to fit the new Canon prime wides as again the convex front elements are totally impractical for landscape work and means they are missing a huge amount of revenue. I have had to stick with the 16-35 Canon just because I can't use grads!
Excellent solution. Will the new lens cap for this lens/ filter holder be available at launch of this filter holder? Secondly, will we be able to buy step down rings to attach this holder to our other 77mm lenses (like the 24-70mm/2.8)? Lastly, can we expect this product by the summer?
Should have also said, That whilst it may not be available from the start, I believe Lee filters have planned additional adaptor rings for use with standard filter threads.
Ultra wide lenses look patchy with a polariser and would not be popular. I doubt at this point if Lee are planning one for this holder.
Lee filters are made from Optical Resin , Optical Polyester or glass. Lee Grad filters including the one in the video are Hand made from optical resin....
The lens shade on this lens is fixed the larger 150mm x 175mm filters mean that even with the fixed shade we will not get cut off in normal use. Lee have planned an alternative lens cap to allow the filter holder rings to remain fixed to the lens whilst still protecting the domed front element.
Normal lee filters are 100mm wide this holder takes movie size 150mm wide filters the only problem is the risk of light flare from behind. Though it is usual for a photographer to flag this out . We are expecting the holder to cost about Gbp £200 and the larger 100mm x 175mm filters to cost about gbp £100 each. Lee have spent the last year testin this in the field. We think it's great.
We have had a lot of imput into this and are hoping this is to be a solution for many wa lenses
Thank you for your kind words.... and yes one ring made from three rings... Sorry but we don't script our Videos so some bits sound daft..... but hopefully you get the idea....
Good news is that this DOES work at 14mm and allows you to rotate the grad without cut off. I am sure the 14-24mm will be optically better than the far cheaper 16-35
You got me there. How is that physically possible? Holding the grad right against the shade there are still cutouts to pass light behind it to the element. Anyone rigging this up has confessed they are limited to 18mm or DX coverage. Nikon otherwise would have produced a plain circular hood without the petal cut outs. BTW I do own the 14-24.
I have this exact camera/lens setup, i would not want to have to assemble the four pieces of aluminum at a beach in the cold and dark and risk scratching the huge front element. Its from Lee so the price of this kit and the price of the new larger filters will total about £500 no doubt.
I would rather just exposure blend when using this lens for landscapes. On order is the new 16-35 f4 and i can just use all my regular sized filters with the new glass so for me this just has no appeal sorry.
Brilliant; what many of us have been waiting for.
@ kishikara: If you are at the wide end of this lens, at least half of the visible sky is always darker, as I am sure you have observed, so you might not want a polariser if you are using a grad at the same time.
If you are concerned about reflections, I can't see why a polariser can't go in one of the slots (I saw two there), though.
imagine carrying this all up a mountain lol think I`ll stick with blending . Bet those lee filters are cheap .

**** NIKON BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE ****
My Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 is back focusing at 14mm (I can’t use AF fine tune because it make the lens blury at 24mm).
I called NIKON, they said: “it happen sometimes”, and asked me to send the lens for repair.
It will cost me $60 for the shipping+insurance ($2000 lens)
Nikon does NOT want to pay for the shipping & insurance.
Why shoud I pay $60 because NIKON did not check the lens before selling it ?
Do you think that is a great customer service ?
