but how did the snail knows if it did the right move? have it some kind of sensor?

My guess is that the rear wheels are rigged with a angular sensor , and the robot knows that it moves forward when the angle is increasing.

Wish I knew how the front part is constructed. I can't figure out for the life of me how to set up the NXT to move like that.
