This makes me want to watch "Save the Tiger" again. Lemmon was brilliant in it.
I bet his comment at 2:20 about the "criticism of this award" is a jab at Brando for that whole Sacheen Littlefeather stunt he pulled a year before this.
Watch Al Pacino here, according to him he was so nervous that day that he took one too many valiums and said if he won and had to get up on stage he would've collapsed.
save th tiger is one of the best movie ever. and it's incredible that lemmon was the lead.he plays a cinic man, who hooks up with a hippy, burn his own office, organize pimpish meeting for his clients.have no idea how he could pull it off.terribly weel done
that was such a raw performance of a man faling apart yet managing to survive. i love films from that era, films in the fifties were about surviving no matter what, the sixties killed everyone's spirit, the eighties as well. now a day i don';t really know what films are about, they are just there. running images with no substance. much like society
This was considered an upset when it happened. A lot of people thought Pacino would win, with a good outside chance being Brando or Nicholson. The thing is, not that many people saw Save the Tiger, and it was a true sleeper.
Watching the film some 30+ years later, he was a very deserving winner.
Jack Lemmon didn't deserve this oscar (and from the end of his speech I think even he realised it), but in the end I don't mind because of how happy one man can be. The way he was so ecstatic when he won just makes this clip wonderful for me.
Holy shit. look at the nominees!! it's like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretsky, and Joe Montana were nominated for athlete of the year. :-)
@Shelby596 I know. Did you see Al Pacino's face. He finally won almost 20 years later for Scent of a Woman. That was the year that Denzel Washington should have won for Malcolm X. This is typcial of the academy . They give actors awards for the wrong performances. Although, they occasionall, get it right.
look at at Jack Nicholson's face when the SURNAME of the winner is announced :) Well, even the greates actors have their losses. He is still the one woth the most Oscars won....
Nothing against jack....but how al pacino never won for serpico and godfather part 2 was beyond me....a mean his eyes did the talking in those two movies....any actor who can do that is the shit...
This was tough. Lemmon was awesome as the perpetual loner where he was able to exercise his dramatic skills,, Pacino brought forth such an empathetic portrayal of "Serpico," and Brando was brilliant as the tortured, carnal widower in "Last Tango in Paris" (though I'm sure the Academy was not going to award him based on the previous behavior of declining his award).
I've never seen "Last Detail," but Nicholson won deservedly two years later, and I'm not a Robert Redford fan by any means.
a one note and one dimensional actor that had a great career because Hoover's blacklisting laid out a playing field for anyone working in Hollywood of no competition.
Couldn't give a stuff about all that, whether it's true or not. I also don't think an actor who could pull off a role like Shelley Levine could ever be described as "one note" - it's one of the most layered, masterful performances I've ever seen, and I'm judging the performance itself here - not the man, his career or the history behind it.
Wow, Jack Nicholson had hair. Jack Lemmon and Marlon Brando already let their hair go grey. Al Pacino was a youngster. The Sting brought back ragtime and made us realize how precious ragtime was to America.
Please, can you just explain to me: the way JN and AP look on JL is so.. you know.. "bad" just because the wanted to win? Or it is because the had a strange relationship to him? Or it just shows the opinion they had about the "classic" Hollywood? I don´t know the context and I´d like to understand the whole situation. Thank you for the explanation. And of course - what a group of actors!! Cream.
well hes got 3 oscars and 12 nominations(both more thn any actor) so jack wasnt too disappointed especially when someone so deserving like jack lemmon beats him
LMAO how ironic that marlon's performance didn't get any applause, considering that it has come to be considered one of the most legendary performances ever captured on film
@abckid1946 i totally agree! i love Jack Lemmon and I so wish I could have met him! He was an extraordinary talent and is still the inspiration for a lot of people.
Jack Lemmon is my all-time favorite actor, and even I admit that this might not have been the performance of his that he most deserved to win an Oscar® for..........but if not him, then who ?
The minute you choose anybody from this particularly great group of nominees, you are immediately going to have a MILLION people that completely disagree with you.
Bottom Line: It was an an amazing group of actors who all gave great performances, in a year that all deserved to win.............
this had to be a gift by the Academy to the senior actor. There's no way Lemmon was better in his film than Redford, Nicholson and Pachino were. .........those 3 were amazing in each of their 1973 films.
@bubbabubbabooba no but jack lemmon was not the type of man that would hunt the glory of hollywood for ever like the rest 3 , he was a very "normal" person.
Lemmon should have won the Best Actor Oscar for his demonically funny performance in "Some Like It Hot", not for this insipid movie. Brando deserved it, but after his "The Godfather" Oscar refusal, no one thought he would win. With that in consideration, the award should have gone to Jack Nicholson for the excellent "The Last Detail".
ehhh you can't compare the two, because they have a different craft. both brilliant portrayed tortured souls who have soo much bottled up inside that they are on the verge of a nervous breakdown. but i do find lemmon was better because you could sympathize with his chrachter. where as brando's was too self-destructive.
Jack N. and Jack L. have the same first name obviously...when he said "and the winner is"...She said "Jack....Lemon"....for a split second Jack N. thought he had it LOLLLLLL
LOL!! I read about this in one of Nicholson's interview:
He said:
One time when I got robbed for The Last Detail, Anjelica (Huston) and I decided to be the worst losers in the history of the Oscars. We dished about people and complained, and didnt smile the rest of the show. It was great.
I think Pacino deserved to win, even though I'm a die-hard Lemmon-fan, but he was so great in Save the Tiger and he deserved that second award so much. I love both of them anyhow. And his speech was so gracious. God bless his memory!
Pacino looks so cool here when he hears the announcement. Jack couldn't hide his disappointment. Not surprised Brando isn't here. But what's with Robert Redford not showing up? He didn't show up when nominated for director for Quiz Show either. Did he only show up for Ordinary People?
God I love Jack Lemmon. I think he's one of the best actors ever. You know why? Well I love Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, but Jack Lemmon could do comedy way better than both of them and then turn around and be amazing in a drama. He was amazing. And so adorable here ha ha!
I had the very great pleasure of meeting Jack Lemmon when he appeared in my home town at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK in the summer of 1989 in a production called "Veteran's Day" . 20 years on, I still treasure the autographed photo I have of him. I was a little nervous when I first approached him, but he was warm and charming and very kind. A geniune guy, sorely missed.
Lemmon had a nervous breakdown during the shooting of Save the Tiger. He really nailed and inhabited that part. One of his greatest performances, I can tell you. No robbery here.
Wow, these are all excellent performances. If I had been any of them I would have felt cheated. But, Jack Lemmon is probably the one that most deserved it.
I love Jack Lemmon, but Robert Redford's performance in 'The Sting' makes me prejudice. That movie is in my top 10 favorites, easy.

But, Jack Lemmon is probably the one that most deserved it.

according to the 1979 playboy interview, pacino was a mess that night and was happy lemmon won because he felt he couldn't make it to the stage.
