  • I love Jack Lemmon, but Robert Redford's performance in 'The Sting' makes me prejudice. That movie is in my top 10 favorites, easy.

  • He should have also won for Days of Wine and Roses, he was amazing in that movie

  • Why didn't Redford show up? Actors in the 70s were so reclusive.

  • kevin spacey has an impression of all of these people except for robert red

  • I love me some Lemmy!!!!!

  • Man, what a lineup! Lemmon, Brando, Redford, Nicholson, and Pacino!!

  • This makes me want to watch "Save the Tiger" again. Lemmon was brilliant in it.

I bet his comment at 2:20 about the "criticism of this award" is a jab at Brando for that whole Sacheen Littlefeather stunt he pulled a year before this.

  • See Lemmon also in Costa Gavras classic "Missing". He is what film acting is all about.

  • I can't think of a single actor in Hollywood who aged as well as Jack Lemmon. That man was beautiful until the day he died.

  • I like Jack Lemmon but .... Jack Nicholson is the best

  • Jack - pissed!

  • amo la sonrisa de jack nicholson

  • and his co-star, Jack Gilford, should have won Best Supporting Actor.

  • AL Pacino is a "Kid face" xD

  • what year?

  • DAMN,Lemon,Pacino,Brando AND Nicholson? They should give them all awards.

  • @bawoman and Redford.

  • nikolson = DEVIL

  • nikolson d miedo

  • @TheIcemangirl iris te pasaste tia

  • Watch Al Pacino here, according to him he was so nervous that day that he took one too many valiums and said if he won and had to get up on stage he would've collapsed.

  • save th tiger is one of the best movie ever. and it's incredible that lemmon was the lead.he plays a cinic man, who hooks up with a hippy, burn his own office, organize pimpish meeting for his clients.have no idea how he could pull it off.terribly weel done

  • that was such a raw performance of a man faling apart yet managing to survive. i love films from that era, films in the fifties were about surviving no matter what, the sixties killed everyone's spirit, the eighties as well. now a day i don';t really know what films are about, they are just there. running images with no substance. much like society

  • Brando got robbed....

  • Al Pacino is so damn handsome even until these days. Swoon! lol

..and this is his 2nd Oscar nomination.

  • This guy is amazingly authentic. He makes all the actors look phony and plastic-like in that room.

  • haha jack nicholson looked so dissapointed... he thought he won it

  • Just give him the new leads already.

  • This was considered an upset when it happened. A lot of people thought Pacino would win, with a good outside chance being Brando or Nicholson. The thing is, not that many people saw Save the Tiger, and it was a true sleeper.

Watching the film some 30+ years later, he was a very deserving winner.

  • al pacino was about to poop!!

  • Oh my God, five legends of cinema as the nominees!

  • Lemmon is one of my all-time favorite actors. He should have also won for "The Days of Wine and Roses" which I think was his best work.

  • Jack Lemmon didn't deserve this oscar (and from the end of his speech I think even he realised it), but in the end I don't mind because of how happy one man can be. The way he was so ecstatic when he won just makes this clip wonderful for me.

  • Jack Lemmon, for "Save the Tigahhhh!"

  • Holy shit. look at the nominees!! it's like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretsky, and Joe Montana were nominated for athlete of the year. :-)

  • @singingindark12 Well put my friend you're exactly right.

  • Al pacino was robbed.

  • Brando should win, but doesnt matter. Oscar was crappy shit for Brando. He dont care

  • Where can I watch this movie?

  • I go to school with his grandsons.

  • @mortalcottonslasher1 really? :)

  • jack lemmon is most extraordinary communicator.

  • This is one of the Oscars Pacino should have won. Love Lemmon, but Serpico is a classic.

  • @Shelby596 I know. Did you see Al Pacino's face. He finally won almost 20 years later for Scent of a Woman. That was the year that Denzel Washington should have won for Malcolm X. This is typcial of the academy . They give actors awards for the wrong performances. Although, they occasionall, get it right.

  • my god..what a list of nominee...legends.....

  • gregory peck!!!!!!

    out of the golden times.

  • They don't make men like they used to, what I'd do to have someone like Jack or Gregory!

  • SERPICOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Best reaction ever.

  • those were the days!

  • A phenomenal list of nominees that year !

  • look at at Jack Nicholson's face when the SURNAME of the winner is announced :) Well, even the greates actors have their losses. He is still the one woth the most Oscars won....

  • J'ADORE Monsieur Jack Lemmon !!!

  • Nothing against jack....but how al pacino never won for serpico and godfather part 2 was beyond me....a mean his eyes did the talking in those two movies....any actor who can do that is the shit...

  • ..."Jack Lemmon, for shave the tigah"...?

  • FOR ME THE WINNING IS AL PACINO FOR HIS STRONG PERFORANCE IN SERPICO, BUT I WOULD SAY FUCK TO THE ACADEMY LIKE ALWAYS

THE GOLDEN GLOBE IS HONEST THAN ACADEMY

THE GOLDEN GLOBE IS THE BEST THE ACADEMY IS BULLSITH

  • @Mr001alpa ...why are you so upset?

  • FOR ME THE WINNING IS AL PACINO FOR HIS STRONG ROLE IN SERPICO

BUT I WOULD SAY FUCK TO THE ACADEMY LIKE ALWAYS

THE GOLDEN GLOBE IS HONEST MORE THAN FUCKING ACADEMY

GOLDEN GLOBE IS THE BEST ACADEMY IS BULLSHIT

  • i read that Nicholsan was very upset about losing for The Last Detail

  • Al Pacino should have won. Serpico is great

  • Pacino and Nicholson looked pissed.. and I don't blame them..

  • @Iker122 heh, yeah, they didn't even bother to put on the "oh I'm so happy he won" fake smile when they announced Jack Lemmon as the winner.

  • Jack Lemmon was much better than Paul Newman was

  • save the tiger blew me. it's so beautiful you don't know wha to think

  • How could they possibly pick from those 5 choices?! Wow, what a powerhouse of acting.

  • Best reaction ever!!

  • what a line up jeeeeezzzzzzzzeeeee

  • There's something just so likable about Jack Lemmon.

  • @PhantomDawg594 So true.....

  • he should have won for some like it hot.

  • I love, love, love, love Jack Lemmon.

  • 7 times nominated for best actor - usually in serious roles even though he was best known for comedies. Good piano player, too.

  • al pacino's sooo nerdy. ^^

  • This was tough. Lemmon was awesome as the perpetual loner where he was able to exercise his dramatic skills,, Pacino brought forth such an empathetic portrayal of "Serpico," and Brando was brilliant as the tortured, carnal widower in "Last Tango in Paris" (though I'm sure the Academy was not going to award him based on the previous behavior of declining his award).

I've never seen "Last Detail," but Nicholson won deservedly two years later, and I'm not a Robert Redford fan by any means.

  • I'm biggest fan of Jack Lemmon, but Pacino for Serpico...

  • jack lemmon was a brilliant actor, I admire him so much, his best performances are just amazing....

  • jack lemmon was a brilliant actor, I admire him so much, his best performances are just amazing.

  • FBI stooge.

a one note and one dimensional actor that had a great career because Hoover's blacklisting laid out a playing field for anyone working in Hollywood of no competition.

  • @MsThunderroad

Couldn't give a stuff about all that, whether it's true or not. I also don't think an actor who could pull off a role like Shelley Levine could ever be described as "one note" - it's one of the most layered, masterful performances I've ever seen, and I'm judging the performance itself here - not the man, his career or the history behind it.

  • Love his reaction.

  • he was an awful actor

rich family is why a one note actor had so many leading roles

FBI stooge willing to tell lies about Norma-Jeane

how an entire generation of "artists" made it

kazan being the number one Hoover stooge.

  • uff must suck to be nominated with someone with the same name as you. Jackkkkkkk....LEMMON. not nicholson, ouch.

  • Jack Lemmon is one of the best American Actor of all Time.

  • @Starfighterking Amen!

  • If memory serves, this was a HUGE upset. Nobody was picking Lemmon. The favorites were Brando and Pacino.

  • In the end Jack Lemmon should have said, "Here's my message to you, "Fuck you and Kiss my ass"

  • Jack Lemmon is one of the best american actors of all time !!!

  • in all these old clips, what is up with the pauses and the minimal clapping?

  • Wow, Jack Nicholson had hair. Jack Lemmon and Marlon Brando already let their hair go grey. Al Pacino was a youngster. The Sting brought back ragtime and made us realize how precious ragtime was to America.

  • wow cant believe all these legendary actors were nominated in the same year its almost impossible to find a cast like this these days

anyway Jack deserved tht award, hes the best actor of the ones nominated in my opinion(and a hell of a performance in save the tiger)

  • long live jack... magic time...

  • La lista de nominados es de miedo: Marlon Brando, Jack Lemon, Jack Nicolson, Al Pacino, Robert Redford.

  • Jesus, compare this list to the modern day list of...well...bollocks.

  • too bad Redford didnt win. The Sting is amazing .

  • oh Liza Minnelli

  • hahaha al is so cute

  • duelo de titanes madre mia los nominados! son los mejores!

  • Wow Gregory Peck and Jack Lemmon together, I would have loved to seen them act in a movie together.

  • Please, can you just explain to me: the way JN and AP look on JL is so.. you know.. "bad" just because the wanted to win? Or it is because the had a strange relationship to him? Or it just shows the opinion they had about the "classic" Hollywood? I don´t know the context and I´d like to understand the whole situation. Thank you for the explanation. And of course - what a group of actors!! Cream.

  • If looks could kill. Jack and Al would have commited mass murder.

  • nicholson looked dissapointed, but who can blame him. he was incredible in the last detail.

  • @putdownan8dude

well hes got 3 oscars and 12 nominations(both more thn any actor) so jack wasnt too disappointed especially when someone so deserving like jack lemmon beats him

  • Man, he is the coolest. But he didn't thank Felicia! Come on, Jack!

  • Gregory Peck was a very bad actor

  • @92af Not very bad. He was dependable, just on the predictable, flat side. His female counterpart was Ingrid Bergman.

  • robert redford...no aplauses...he got shit...zero....he didnt even cared to show up....love his movies though....good movies

  • Gregorry Peck: Look, I'll turn the Tiger into an Oscar. Whoo-hee-who-hee-who-who-hee

  • I love Lemmon's face when he won.

Before: "Yeah, it's probably going to Marlon; my money's on Nicholson."

    After: "HOLY F***!"

Also, he's the first person to win both the Lead Actor and Supporting Actor Oscars.

  • @KillingFloor1993 I loved it,too.

  • LMAO how ironic that marlon's performance didn't get any applause, considering that it has come to be considered one of the most legendary performances ever captured on film

  • jack nicholson didn't like lose this award!

  • @alanklayner1 Ha! How does he like those 9 loses!

  • Jack Lemmon's Best Performances:

    1.Save the Tiger (1973)

2.Days of Wine and Roses (1962)

    3.Some Like It Hot (1959)

    4.The Apartment (1960)

    5.Mister Roberts (1955)

  • @thetevinator Don't forget Missing.

  • @thetevinator I'd add to that Glengarry Glen Ross ... Lemmon once again in top form.

  • Damn. The excitement on Jack's face when he won was priceless. In a good way.

  • Some people never die, they remain alive in our hearts and our souls..

Jack Lemmon you are not going anywhere.

You are in our minds and you are still alive.

  • @abckid1946 i totally agree! i love Jack Lemmon and I so wish I could have met him! He was an extraordinary talent and is still the inspiration for a lot of people.

  • did you notice Brando didn't get an applause. A lot of people were mad at the last tango in paris.

  • Jack Lemmon is my all-time favorite actor, and even I admit that this might not have been the performance of his that he most deserved to win an Oscar® for..........but if not him, then who ?

The minute you choose anybody from this particularly great group of nominees, you are immediately going to have a MILLION people that completely disagree with you.

Bottom Line: It was an an amazing group of actors who all gave great performances, in a year that all deserved to win.............

  • one of the best actors of all time

  • this had to be a gift by the Academy to the senior actor. There's no way Lemmon was better in his film than Redford, Nicholson and Pachino were. .........those 3 were amazing in each of their 1973 films.

  • @bubbabubbabooba no but jack lemmon was not the type of man that would hunt the glory of hollywood for ever like the rest 3 , he was a very "normal" person.

  • I wish that Jack Lemmon still lived

  • jack lemmon....his performance in missing is wow

  • America will never have such great actors again.

  • Lemmon should have won the Best Actor Oscar for his demonically funny performance in "Some Like It Hot", not for this insipid movie. Brando deserved it, but after his "The Godfather" Oscar refusal, no one thought he would win. With that in consideration, the award should have gone to Jack Nicholson for the excellent "The Last Detail".

  • I agree he should have won for Some Like It Hot, everyone goes on about Tony and Marilyn but Jack was by far the most outstanding!

  • Wow, what a competitive year for this award.

  • "You are a shitheat williamson"

GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS IS THE BEST yah!

  • ahaha jack nicholson looks pissed!

  • WOW

5 of the best actors of all time nominated at the same time!

  • Jack Lemmon was way better than Marlon Brando was

  • ehhh you can't compare the two, because they have a different craft. both brilliant portrayed tortured souls who have soo much bottled up inside that they are on the verge of a nervous breakdown. but i do find lemmon was better because you could sympathize with his chrachter. where as brando's was too self-destructive.

  • It evidently sucks to cheer for the winner when you've just lost. (0:39)

  • don't boo me but damm that audience is awfully white !

  • and straight.

  • @etrax2000 black people hadn't been invented then

  • Ha! That made me laugh! Thank you! Needed it today :)

  • "So I popped a valium. Actually, I was eating valium like they were candy. Chewed on them. Finally came the Best Actor. Can you

imagine the shape I was in? I couldnt have made it to the stage. I was praying, Please dont let it be me. Please. And I hearJack

Lemmon. I was just so happy I didnt have to get up, because I never would have made it." -Al Pacino lmao

  • wow that audience sucks

  • @artmania1990

    Why??

  • @artmania1990 lol

  • Jack N. and Jack L. have the same first name obviously...when he said "and the winner is"...She said "Jack....Lemon"....for a split second Jack N. thought he had it LOLLLLLL

  • @ManPigApe

    Poor... ¬¬

  • How did Pacino even came to the ceremony if he was stoned? Did they carried him?

  • Comment removed

  • that is one hell of a 'best actor 'list

  • Can't believe Pacino didn't win for Serpico. That's the best acting performance EVER, let alone of 1973.

  • Jack Lemmon was an awesome actor

  • LOL!! I read about this in one of Nicholson's interview:

    He said:

One time when I got robbed for The Last Detail, Anjelica (Huston) and I decided to be the worst losers in the history of the Oscars. We dished about people and complained, and didnt smile the rest of the show. It was great.

U can just see his expression 0:38 LOL

Jack n. is the man!!!~ hahahah

  • oh jack, we love you but you werent robbed in the slightest.

  • Comment removed

  • If only today's comedy actors were as good as Jack Lemmon

  • I forgot his little dance! I've never seen this before. Wonderful. He was always, always one of my favorites. I miss him.

  • Lol, I bet Nicholson and Lemmon both thought they won at first. xD

  • Comment removed

  • I think Brando should have won.

  • I think Pacino deserved to win, even though I'm a die-hard Lemmon-fan, but he was so great in Save the Tiger and he deserved that second award so much. I love both of them anyhow. And his speech was so gracious. God bless his memory!

  • i am related to jack lemmon!!!

  • pacino should have won

  • The "stars" today don't have the class that the stars of then had in one finger.

  • Jack Lemmon was so handsome in middle age.

  • haha i love Liza's little laugh after she announces his name :)

  • they should really use the preferencial method for all the oscars not just for the best picture, it prevents mishaps from happening.

  • Comment removed

  • Marlon Brando should have won!

  • jack lemmon ist soooo toll

  • Pacino looks so cool here when he hears the announcement. Jack couldn't hide his disappointment. Not surprised Brando isn't here. But what's with Robert Redford not showing up? He didn't show up when nominated for director for Quiz Show either. Did he only show up for Ordinary People?

  • God I love Jack Lemmon. I think he's one of the best actors ever. You know why? Well I love Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, but Jack Lemmon could do comedy way better than both of them and then turn around and be amazing in a drama. He was amazing. And so adorable here ha ha!

  • I had the very great pleasure of meeting Jack Lemmon when he appeared in my home town at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK in the summer of 1989 in a production called "Veteran's Day" . 20 years on, I still treasure the autographed photo I have of him. I was a little nervous when I first approached him, but he was warm and charming and very kind. A geniune guy, sorely missed.

  • yea jack lemmon good actor

  • Lemmon had a nervous breakdown during the shooting of Save the Tiger. He really nailed and inhabited that part. One of his greatest performances, I can tell you. No robbery here.

  • pacino looks high,lol

  • I think he was

  • he was.

  • Wow, these are all excellent performances. If I had been any of them I would have felt cheated. But, Jack Lemmon is probably the one that most deserved it.

  • according to the 1979 playboy interview, pacino was a mess that night and was happy lemmon won because he felt he couldn't make it to the stage.

  • great speech
