i love how he approaches each note with such a deliberate intention, he knows what hes playing, why he playing it , and how to do it. he takes each in and hammers it without a sign of assuredness
Playing this for an audition at The Crane School of Music next week.
Its amazing how musical primrose can make this sound at such a fast tempo... I mean, I can play it this fast but... not with all his bells and whistles :P
I perform it quite a bit slower, as do most violists.
Absolute, thanks for the fantastic post. Brings back memories of my childhood when I played viola. My father bought Zukerman's Viola concerto album for me when I was in 5th grade. Just loved it. I have always been an ardent admirer of Primrose. Thanks again.
This is amazing! I'm a total orch dork and just found out about William Primrose and how awesome he is. This song has quickly become one of my favorie classical pieces. Thanks for uploading it!
does anyone notice how he clips some of the rhythms in the beginning? it's too catchy not to do it having this recording in my ears for so long hahah love the man
For people complaining about the tempo, I believe he did it faster because back then they were using 78rpm records that could only hold a couple of minutes.
About the title: It's believed that Casadesus wrote this piece, but realizing that his work wouldn't be taken seriously, put Handel's name on it to make it a success. He's done this on other pieces as well, so the next time you see the author as Handel/Casadesus, it's not that they wrote it together, but rather that Casadesus used Handel's name. I recently played this without harmony for a state audition which I was admitted. One of my favorite pieces for sure.
@WatcherofTrends Yes thats very true. The entire Casadesus family made fakery into a cottage industry. Apparently Henri Casadesus claimed to have come by Handel's original composition, just as he did the Bach one, and that he had "completed" these pieces. Surprisingly, Casadesus could never produce any solid evidence of them. Performers like Primrose, Menuhin, and Heifetz recorded them under Bach and Handel until the 1970's when music experts determined Casadesus to be the composer.
Not only can he do it magically at this tempo, but with ornaments and frills. The sweeping beauty and tension build up is just so much more satisfying. This is the Man.
The tempo is great, slower would turn it sloppy, like some Bach E major violin concerto old recordings ( milstein, Oistrak, for example ) listen to Kremer's concept on this concerto and you will see what i mean. Some one PLEASE tell me where i can get the orchestral parts and score of this Casadesus concert?
Primrose has technique to spare. This piece is beyond him. He's a master...that's why he's able to pull it off with this tempo...I,on the other hand, must play it a bit slower:( it's still beautiful!!!
It's hilarious that people thought it was actually by Handel. You hear a lot of Handel these days and it's quite clear this isn't written by any Baroque composer. It's a nice pastiche however.
Well, I suppose it's your opinion, but you should open your mind to other tempo choices. I think Henri Casadesus would've been thrilled to have heard this concerto performed at this tempo
I liked it.
