This is the one from the MET broadcast. He almost split the "C" on this one. He wasn't "on". For this performance he should have sung it a half step down to avoid disaster (like Jussi B. in his broadcast w/Tebaldi). Doesn't matter, it was still great. & he left so many examples of his brilliant top.
@HTHAMMACK1 Read it again. As a tenor myself I know what it is to be less than "on". Some days the "top" simply won't work & you'll find many examples of LP & other greats singing it in the lower key. If you read more comments about LP & others, you will find those that are very critical & at times unfairly so. If we all sat backed & "enjoyed the performance" there would be no need for the comments section.
@Lovelytenor1 I don't think singing it half step down would have help regardless. He made uneased/insecure approach on the F. That led to misplacement for the high C. Plus, you don't know if you have to lower the key until you are in the middle of the aria.
@steakopera For myself & some of the other tenors(including many of the famous ones), we know back stage sometimes that "it just ain't workin'" on top so we request that something be played down....and other times we find that out at the critical moment. For me it is allergies(heard that Jussi B had same problem). Did this aria last year, & at my age, I did sing it down. People loved it.
@Lovelytenor1 I think this is a different case. I didn't detact any discomfort in his singing through out the whole aira. His voice sounds silky as it gets. Maybe little bit in the back, that might have been the factor. People loved your lowered key becasue you are not Mr. Pavarotti. Expectation to prove himself and expectation from the audience were greater.
@steakopera ANY tenor who gets up to sing this aria must prove himself, at 65 even more so. You weren't there so how would you know why people loved it? People loved it because my voice is prettier than LP. Surely his voice was more "operatic" but in timbre/tone/phrasing I can compete....even at 66.
@Lovelytenor1 What is your voice got to do with a discussion on Pav's crack. You are right for saying,"Any tenor......prove himself' I can name very few tenors who sound prettier than Pav though. If you say you are, I don't want to judge. But it's wrong of you to compare/relate this incident with yours. It's just a human mistake and I am sure Pav did his best to avoid making the same mistake again on this particular high C.

@Lovelytenor1 With all due respect, who are you to criticize arguably the greatest opera singer that ever lived?
Just enjoy the performance.
