I would say NO. I wouldn't take a chance on strangulation.
Sounds like your pig's not fully grown - we've never seen this happen w a fully grown pig. If so, remove the pig(s) until they are large enough to use the cage safely.
You can also try attaching a grid or screen with smaller openings on the inside of your cage. Don't use anything solid like glass or plastic sheet as it will restrict the airflow thru the cage - trapping harmful ammonia fumes.
I just put down a playpen that has 9 squares across and one and a half inches wide and one of my guinea pigs got her head stuck in it but pulled it out quick should I keep letting them play in it or no?
Usually they're called something like "storage cubes". However, Target is no longer the place to go. They changed their design a couple years ago so that the holes are too big for guinea pig cage use. I have heard that Bed Bath and Beyond is the place to go now. Don't know, we buy in bulk from a distributer.
@gaz8015 You can use any material as long as it is safe for your pigs and is waterproof. Reminder: You will also need walls to keep bedding from being kicked out of the cage and to contain any excess liquids. That's a few of the reasons Coroplast is so popular for this application. It can be formed into a bin or tray with walls and it is waterproof. It is also non-toxic and approved for contact with food.
@xraindrops34x All I can tell you - we were contacted by the Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue shelter in Aug 2008. They warned us they had seen one guinea pig strangulation death from 8x8 grids and expected more. Shortly afterward, we got a 2nd email from another rescue org w/ similar warning
We here at BlueStoneCommerce only use 9x9 grids & have never used 8x8 grids so I can't answer you from experience.
Recommend you do some more online research - post questions at some g. pig forums, etc.
@nilcole1999 If you buy a storage cube set - like the Bed Bath and Beyond set, then yes, you do get plastic connectors. If you just buy grids somewhere, then you have to buy connectors separately - you can find them online.
For our BlueStoneCommerce cages, we like to use zip ties or tie wraps because they make a much stronger and secure connection. They don't pop off or pull apart.
@nilcole1999 No I am not. I have not been inside a BB&B for YEARS. I just used them as an example because I have seen their product before and juicypopsicle26 said she found them there about 3 weeks ago.
I suggest you give them a call and ask if they're in stock.
@nilcole1999 Yep, we have 5 pigs. Charlie and Cupcake are solid brown. Apple and Pippen are reddish brown with white markings and pumpkin is solid orangish brown. Charlie is the dad and the other four are brothers and sisters.
Their mom, Pippi, died during birth - very sad. She looked just like Pippen - so he's named after her.
@nilcole1999 BYW - You can also see a short video of our pigs on our website bluestonecages dotcom. Look in the left sidebar for the video - you'll have to scroll down a little till you see the small YouTube video (It's called "Guinea Pigs, Nothin Like em")
@nilcole1999 I buy my grids at Target - they only have them sometimes though, so you may have to check 2 or 3 times before you can be sure if the Target near you carries them or not.
@xxsuperxrad WARNING: Target grids all used to be 9x9 grids. They redesigned them so they have some 8x8 grids and some 5x5 grids. We have been warned by more than one guinea pig rescue organization to AVOID 8x8 GRIDS. They look okay - but have larger holes than 9x9 grids and have been reported to be choking hazards for your pigs.
So, when you buy at Target - MAKE SURE THE GRIDS ARE 9x9 (1.5 in spacing) or you may seriously injure your pig.
ok i found some grids, but u can take them apart and make them in a differnt shape right??? so can i put it in a cage shape? plz comment back plz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We can't give you a good source because we have not bought grids from a retail store for quite a while now. We have grids shipped directly to us in large quantities.
Perhaps someone else out there can help you out with a good source.
If you can't find grids, and you live in the US or Canada, contact us through our store and you can buy some grids through us.
BE VERY CAREFUL OF TARGET GRIDS. They recently cost-reduced the design. The grids used to be 9x9 squares. The cube sets now include 2 diff grid types - 5x5 and 8x8. The 5x5 holes are clearly too big - the 8x8 look as if they'll work - BUT THEY DON'T.
We were contacted by a couple pig rescue organizations right after the design change. They reported strangulation injuries and deaths by people using the 8x8 grids w larger spacing.
Make sure your grids are the old style 9x9. DONT USE THE 8X8s
I only see them sporatically at Costco. They carry them for a while and then they dissapear for a long time. The last time I saw them there they were good and also reasonably priced. In fact, we built our very first cage years ago with Costco grids.
Please, can anyone recommend a water bottle that won't leak? I have wasted like $10 in bottles but they all leak. I ended up putting a water bowl but I know that is not safe for my piggy because she gets the water dirty :(
Make sure when you go to the sign store that you tell them you want the coroplast for a piggie cage. I got a very good price for a 4X8 sheet. They treat you better if they know you're not competing with them, making signs. Thanks for the great video!
Also, if you take along the exact measurements, some shops will cut to size free of charge if you ask. A sign shop near us charges for Coroplast by the square inch - so cutting to size actually saves money because you don't pay for the entire 4x8 sheet.
The point annelle and I are making is rich communication with your sign shop in all aspects can be very important to getting good results.
Be very careful of Target grids. Make sure the particular grids that you bought all have 9 squares on a side.
Target has recently changed their design so that each box has 8x8 and 5x5 grids. The 5x5 are much too big and we (BlueStoneCommerce) were contacted by a pig rescue organization who warned us to avoid the new 8x8 Target grids. They reported that some guinea pigs got stuck in the larger spaces and were strangled.
The Targets in our area have 9x9 grids in chrome only - so be very careful.
Try calling some sign shops in your area. Typically a good place to buy Coroplast in small quantities. Call more than one because prices can vary a lot.
Was the lecture about cardboard really necessary????!

wount the coroplast walls block the strangulation??
midnaXlink4ever4564 1 year ago
@midnaXlink4ever4564
Don't know. You might think so. I've never seen it myself - all our cages have used 9x9 grids.
The only reason we know about it is because a couple pig rescue organizations emailed us and warned us not to use 8x8 grids. That's all I know...
