Can someone explain tome what the difference between macross and robotech? From what i understand the original macross had 36 eps. and robotech has like 86?? do I have see the second season of robotech in order to see macross plus??
Robotech is a story which includes a modified version of Macross. It has nothing to do with Macross Plus. At the time Robotech aired, a show needed 65(?) episodes for syndication. Macross alone could not fit that requirement, so Carl Macek adjusted the story to make it connect with two other anime series. This second saga of Robotech was originally unrelated to the Macross saga other than a similar name ("Super Dimensional").
The sound effects are NOT of the original tv airing. I'm not talking about the Japanese version, but from the original airing on American tv (1980s). When you hear the laser canon fire, the explosions and the fighters flying around, it's not the original sound. I don't like it as much as the original sound. It seems like they tried to give the show more realistic sound fx. They're ok, but I prefer the old sound fx. If I decide to buy the dvd set, I will try to find the original sound fx.
@TheVerta22: Depends on which version you're referring to and if you consider the "Robotech:The Sentinels" novels and comic books to be canon. In the original Japanese Macross, the universe was scattered with independent Zentraedi Fleets. In Sentinels, the Zentraedi who had allied with Gloval and the SDF-1 went into deep space with the expeditionary forces. In Macross Plus, Macross 7 & Macross Frontier, the Zentraedi who allied themselves with Earth, went to the stars on the human colony ships.
After the REF settles all that goes down in the Masters' regions of space, they come back to try to retake Earth, (Invid saga). so the masters find a planet being rebuilt, and after this series, the Invid come to find a planet they can pretty much just have without a fight. I really thought the progression of the arcs was well done, but I doubt I'd have that opinion had I not read the novelizations...
The reason the mecha aren't more advanced is because the Robotech Expeditionary Force(Lisa, Rick, et al.) took everything of value with them to find the Robotech Master's homeworld and take the fight to them. The two forces missed each other- so the REF gets to the master's world to find it deserted while the Masters get to Earth, which is played out here. I think the government in control at this time staged a coup right after the REF left to gain their power, too-read the novels YEARS ago...
these commercials are a fucking pain in the ass. you can show me the same shit over and over its not going to make me buy it despite all your 'research' so fuck you.
@cstory72 while that may be true, it had some cool mecha designs. The Bioroids kicked ass, as well as the Spartans and Ajaxs, I mean, hovertanks and helicopters that transform into giant robots ftw.
Wow...usually time tends to make technology better so what the heck happened to those Veritechs xD that alone is enough to make me stop at this episode. Plus, I heard the rest sucked xD
Why were there male soldiers in Miriya's squadron? The Zentradi are sex-segregated, so they'd all be female. Also, it's a shame that Southern Cross was edited this way because it's really a decent show, but it ends up being the weakest part of the Robotech tv series
Yeah, Roy was dead by this time in Robotech: The Macross Saga. Rick was not in combat at this time, I think he and Lisa were stuck in a part of the ship during a transformation of the SDF1. Max was called back to see what the game was with that one Zentradi fighter, but certainly not by Roy. Max was under Rick's command. This sort of inconsistency throughout this series is why I never got into it after having enjoyed The Macros Saga back when I was a kid.
@brandiandpaul I watched this as a kid back in the 80's when it originally aired. I was enjoying a bit of nostalgia. I should know about real life by now... and about a little thing called "suspension of disbelief" which I assume you've never heard of. When a time line is broken, or physics ignored, it prevents suspension of disbelief and ruins a plot... but I might as well be trying to teach quadratic equations to a vegetable.
For those who are wondering what happened in between this episode and the previous one with Rick, Lisa and everyone else, check out the Robotech: The Sentinels Movie. It explains several keys things even though it is incomplete.
And, no, Rick, Lisa, Max and Miryia aren't dead and all of them live even into the New Generation series.
@kurlobe Max was introduced to Rick by Roy. Roy was dead before Max met Miryia. In this flash back they screw up showing both Rick and Roy flying the same Skull Leader Veritech, even though neither were present during this dogfight in the original Macross Saga. Otherwise, Miryia might have decided one of them was the best pilot, and gone after them instead of Max. Especially if Roy had been there.
@Hei1Bao4 In the Harmony Gold version of Robotech, when Max & Miriya had their first combat Rick was hospitalised. Roy was indeed in charge, in fact he was killed by a stray shot in this fight. He never actually met Miriya.
Both Rick & Max were under overall comand of Roy, so he could issue orders to any of them. Again, this is the Harmony Gold version, I have no idea how the original Japanese goes.
If you look at Robotech as a mythology, the SDF represents Space Force (it is a composite creature of space force, and there are communities that surround military installations and a few camp followers--the entertainment circus--and civilians). We should only see all officers, except for the Chief top enlisted post as he is a supervisor of enlisted duties, because each mecha represents a unit instead of a simple machine. Done for our entertainment of high adventure, not leaky butt reality.
Damn... if one of my friends came up to me and started telling me how his/her parents met then i'd be out the door so fast that my shadow would be left behind.
im sorry but even if sony is doing 3d games as well they lose to nintendo because nintendo's making 3d without the need for the stupid high priced glasses
The style of this is shockingly incongruous to the original series, and looks nothing like Macross. Also so far I have no idea just what the hell is going on, and the Robotech Masters' dialogue is incredibly confusing. Sadly the best part of this episode was the flashback. I'll give this series another chance by watching a few more eps but if it's this confusing and unfamiliar I may just blow it off entirely.
@Nightweaver1 , yeah. What happened is that Harmony Gold meshed three entirely seperate and unrelated japanese animes together to craft Robotech. The reasoning for this was because as a series 65 episodes or so were required to air it as a weekday series or some such. As a result you get an overall plot that suffers in fluidity and continuity. That sucks, but I gotta give them some credit for doing as well as they did with this Frankenstein many have fell in love with.
how do you think i felt about Gundam Zeta? Amuro may of been whiney but still he was the main character for 42 whole episodes
Kamile was ok (he used a Gundam to get revenge on someone, he was tired of being treated small so he used his Gundam on the guy without a MS and made him feel small, that was pretty funny LOL) but i still missed Amuro
Actually the Sentinels was a failed production made here in America. Only went like two episodes before cancelling. There are continuity issues after that because the Sentinels wasn't officially recognized as canon.
Thee episode was producted actaully. Sentinals cancel due to the crrash of dollar and yen exchange rate. Matchbox left because of the increase of cost.
@Neoguest your right and I do think it is official as cannon, since Harmony gold was involved and they created the arc that linked 3 diffferent anime stories together.
Here's hoping MANGAentertainment puts up a valid upload for Robotech II: The Sentinels, the 1986/87 movie which bridges the gap between The Macross Saga & The Masters. It reveals what became of Rick Hunter, Lisa, Dana's parents, and the rest of the survivors of that era as they ventured on the REF's Pioneer Mission. Also, it shows Dana and Bowie as childhood friends, Leonard's fears of the imminent Second Robotech War, and even a cameo by Rolf Emerson. Really a neat side story set before Masters
The movie would nice, but then people would want the Series to be Uploaded, and thats a No Go from that Point On since the The Sentinels Series was never completed.
Interesting. I saw (and really dug) Robotech (Macross Saga) back in the 80s, but never saw Masters until now. I remember seeing a few episodes of what I believe has come to be known as Next Gen. and was disappointed at the anime then. I still look forward to seeing this series through--it still beats what's on TV now.
Is there a Kyle-like character I should start hating right away? U know, just to save time...
nope the first saga is called the MACROSS saga for a reason. That was the name of the series that harmony gold used to create robotech.the series came in the 1980's before the mckinney novels
This show really takes me back to my childhood. Remember renting Robotech at the local videostore among with Silverfang. These shows were and are still epic.
It was not anime dumbass they were silent pictures and barely moved it was manga on the big screen. look up your facts. the first true anime wasent till the 80's
No your mistaken.Tetsujin 28 (Gigantor)and Astro Boy came WAY before the 80's.Gundam started in 1979.Also Kimba the White Lion is old too. And Speed Racer came out before the 80's. Anime is what the People of Nihon call all animation, not just the movies.Your facts I must say are mistaken.
I'm just saying that I think they could have done better. Other anime with the Robotech name on it does. If I was a troll, I'd be posting in some ridiculous mish-mash of 1337 and swearing.
Nobody's saying you have to like my opinion, but I put it out there because it's what I believe, not because I'm looking for attention. There is a difference, you know.
So, you're saying that this was produced BEFORE the Macross Saga and the movie? Even if that's so, there were better anime out there at the time. Heck, Transformers started in Japan before the American version came out in the 80's and BOTH were of higher caliber as far as the graphic art goes.
Made in 1984, in the wake of the success of the Macross TV series (and shortly before the release of the OAV Megazone 23 which would become Robotech the Movie).
Tatsunoko always saw Southern Cross as a cash-in title and did not really lavish too much attention on it. Conceptually, it was brilliant, but the production budget really did not match the vision. Even here in Japan it rather dipped under the radar, and I don't even recall seeing it on its first run back in the 80s.
Robotech was made from three UNRELATED anime series, given new scripts so that they could be strung together with some sense of continuity. The REAL names of these series are Super Dimensional Fortress MACROSS, Super Dimensional Militia Southern Cross (not related storywise, just carries the Super Dimensional title), and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA.
What Paladium Books did was clever, yes, but I really feel it creates alot of unneeded confusion.
she changed he hair color because she dont want people realized she was Zentraedi or an Alien, she always refused to be an alien or a Zentraedi girl you have to read the novels I think the name was Mater gambit from Jack McKinney
The stories written by Jack Mckinney are not "core continuity."Also Dana Sterling is actually Jeanne Francaix.and the baby from the previous saga was named Komilia after Milia aka Miria.
the Jack McKinney novels were released under the robotech license so they are part of the robotech universe, Carl Macek in self declared the importance of this novels because they expose a lot of things about the characters even more that the comics does, and let me tell you that you are mixing things Komilia is from the Macross Universe not Robotech and Jeanne is from southern Cross you must first make that clear in your mind
jajaja... my kids, my son, and my daugter, and no, i don`t write english so much, just a little. And i don`t understend so much this language... just can i see and understend readding. :)
EatRune, it was from Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross. Wow, its' been a long time since I've seen the Southern Cross saga! I don't remember Dana sounding like a 40 year old woman.

The level of excellence in drawing and color here is SO far below that of the Robotech movie. Very disappointing in an anime.

Spookoyuko 2 years ago
i dont know when the first anime came out but T.V. was not avalible to the public until the 1930's so be careful who you call a dumb ass
sarahseth4 2 years ago
Cinemas were available to the public back in the 1920s. Why do you think people were making anime back then, dumberass?
Spookoyuko 2 years ago
next you wil be telling me thet kabuki theater was the first anime.

YOU SIR are right.they won't agree with you even after they check the facts. Don't argue with the unintelligent. It'll lower your I.Q. by 15 points.

It was not anime dumbass they were silent pictures and barely moved it was manga on the big screen. look up your facts. the first true anime wasent till the 80's
sarahseth4 2 years ago
No your mistaken.Tetsujin 28 (Gigantor)and Astro Boy came WAY before the 80's.Gundam started in 1979.Also Kimba the White Lion is old too. And Speed Racer came out before the 80's. Anime is what the People of Nihon call all animation, not just the movies.Your facts I must say are mistaken.

Um, Anime is a general term that became a more specific slang term in the early 80s.
Anime is Japanese animation.
The FIRST full-length anime was made in 1917.
It was called "Imokawa Mukuzo Genkanban no Maki" or "The Story of the Concierge Mukuzo Imokawa".

CarlGorn 2 years ago
So, you're saying that this was produced BEFORE the Macross Saga and the movie? Even if that's so, there were better anime out there at the time. Heck, Transformers started in Japan before the American version came out in the 80's and BOTH were of higher caliber as far as the graphic art goes.
CarlGorn 2 years ago
Made in 1984, in the wake of the success of the Macross TV series (and shortly before the release of the OAV Megazone 23 which would become Robotech the Movie).
Tatsunoko always saw Southern Cross as a cash-in title and did not really lavish too much attention on it. Conceptually, it was brilliant, but the production budget really did not match the vision. Even here in Japan it rather dipped under the radar, and I don't even recall seeing it on its first run back in the 80s.

she could have her hair dyed blond

I will say this ONE TIME:
Robotech was made from three UNRELATED anime series, given new scripts so that they could be strung together with some sense of continuity. The REAL names of these series are Super Dimensional Fortress MACROSS, Super Dimensional Militia Southern Cross (not related storywise, just carries the Super Dimensional title), and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA.
What Paladium Books did was clever, yes, but I really feel it creates alot of unneeded confusion.

Dana's dad has blue hair & her mom has green hair. Where did Dana get her blond hair from? The postman?
HCreams 2 years ago 3
This character design was from a show that was unrelated to the show used to create the macross saga.

So was the show.

segalaw19800 2 years ago
she changed he hair color because she dont want people realized she was Zentraedi or an Alien, she always refused to be an alien or a Zentraedi girl you have to read the novels I think the name was Mater gambit from Jack McKinney
dejabu24 2 years ago
The stories written by Jack Mckinney are not "core continuity."Also Dana Sterling is actually Jeanne Francaix.and the baby from the previous saga was named Komilia after Milia aka Miria.
179107199999 2 years ago
the Jack McKinney novels were released under the robotech license so they are part of the robotech universe, Carl Macek in self declared the importance of this novels because they expose a lot of things about the characters even more that the comics does, and let me tell you that you are mixing things Komilia is from the Macross Universe not Robotech and Jeanne is from southern Cross you must first make that clear in your mind

EatRune, it was from Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross. Wow, its' been a long time since I've seen the Southern Cross saga! I don't remember Dana sounding like a 40 year old woman.

I hate how Dana's mother (Miriya) went from being a hot&spicy chica to a lesser version of herself by getting married.

At the time when Robotech was being aired, Lupn was a Nobody, so the kind people of Robotech gave him a Spot in their show.
