You know i did actually liked that "shoot-style" match with Taz and Little Guido. It could of been longer but nontheless and a good decent match. I though the original ECW was going to have more of those, what happened?
Good point! It is funny to think that pro-wrestling as a style evolved from so many "shoot" grappling disciplines and now there is a popular trend of people wanting to see wrestling become more like UFC. I'm on the fence but the Taz/Guido match is a great template for it!
Wec's event last night was excellent. Too bad about Faber's hand injury(s). If not for them, that would have been one of the best fights for the year. But that flying knee by Aldo was insane.
Great BLOOOOOOOOG Rodney, I agree with people like Tazz being mentioned, because to me, technical wrestling isn't just about hammerlocks, it's about techniques (see technicial/techniques... argh forget it) that are legitimate and can be used to actually take down someone or make a guy tap, and Tazz was one of those guys who brought legit techniques into wrestling.
I agree. I always thought Taz(z) was kinda underrated when it came to discussions about technical wrestlers. He's one of the first guys I can remember bringing that legit shooter style to pro wrestling. I mean the Steiners had great mat ability but Taz(z) has that legit shooter background.
Chris & I went to see them Superbowl weekend. The fuckers had event security take your camera's memory stick before you got in the building because they didn't want pictures taken & during the 2-3 hours or so they didn't bother putting them in alphabetical order or any sort of order, so me & hundreds of other people were crammed in to this little room for almost 2 hours afterwards just to get them back! That fucking sucked, but the show ruled, their music is great & their last CD was good too
When it's complete I'll enter it into whatever festivals whose deadlines I can meet. I'll keep everyone posted as to when it's complete. It will premiere in NYC though.
Nice mention of William Regal, he's the old school grappler that still makes it look very real. There's too much high-flyer and stunt man stuff nowadays, there should be a couple more characters like Regal.
When I think about technical wrestlers, I think about what I like to called "The Red Squad" (I don't know why that name, it just sounds good to me).
-Gary Albright : Taz's mentor, the frist man to be nicknamed "Suplex Machine". This guy just would be a killer in MMA. Unfortunately he died few years ago, BUT he showed us some great performance at the UWF-i.
-"Dr. Death" Steve Williams : Not necessarilly a mat master, but like his partner, a true Suplex Machine, remeber his BackDrop Driver.
-PJ Friedman : He's not in the same league than Gary & Steve but as Williams' protege, he showed some pretty good things, especially in MLW.
-Tamon Honda : I never saw in my entire life (OK I'm only 17), a guy using judo throws and submissions that way. So effective.
I also have to mentionned OLD Lucha legends like Jorge "Skayde" Rivera, El Pantera, El Matematico who invented so many inovative subsmissions. They're the proof that Lucha was technical (yes it was!).
Thanks for your great input! Especially the luchadors, we'll have to look them up. Lucha is known for having complicated/innovative submission holds despite being famous for their high flying, but along those same lines, that's why Taz or Gary Albright didn't pop immediately in to my head for "technical wrestlers" because while they certainly did submissions, they were more known for their throws/suplexes than mat-based holds I think. But all the same, thanks again! Great info

MMA Rules. First became a fan of the UFC around 97-98, all the while enjoying pro wrestling.
The more MMA you guys do, the better. Its the fastest growing and most exciting sport in the world for a reason.
