Ok back to the original question. you asked why does he play with distortion. My answer is it makes it powerful and badass. If he played on clean it would sound like jazz band. Also Kirk and James are playing with overdrive. And this is why he plays it with overdrive.

Don't get me wrong, I love Cliff, but, during any non-solo parts, I really can't get away with his sound. I think it works well in the full song, and that's what counts, but, honestly, I'm not a massive fan of this.
