The best way to take out this asteroid if you had the technology would be to get a missile with a solid steel warhead about a ton in weight and accelerate it to almost the speed of light before it hits. When something reaches that speed it's mass would increase massively and it would impact with such massive kinetic energy it would totally destroy the asteroid or planetoid before it hit Earth. If you had the technology of course. Then we could defend the Earth against anything.

Sorry, it was about 20.000.000.000.000.000 Megatons of TNT equivalent that created the Earth's moon, the entire crust was cast out into space and created the Earth's moon. This would give the Earth an atmosphere of super heated steam for thousands of years, so even if you burrowed way down deep under the crust you would still die. Best to climb a mountain and wait for the superheated vapourised rock cloud tom vapourise you.

You see how it goes into the Earth, the crust would act like liquid with an impact like that, if it hit dead on then it would go straight into the Earth and spread ejecta out into space. Which heats up the atmosphere on the way back in. But what they did not show is the effect of the shock wave that would spread from the impact.

Btw, the impact that created the Earths moon was about 2000.000.000 Megatons of TNT. This might be close 2 that.

Destruction doesn't solve everything. Redirecting its course would be the only plausible solution, which is not an easy task.
