@soccer23m because water is a product of this reaction and it is exothermic so the heat changes the resulting water into steam and also boils off some of the water in the aqueous (assuming one is not using 100% H2SO4) solution. the steam escaped unless you trap it resulting in less mass when you measure it, but if you trap the steam and measure the mass of all the products it obeys the law of conservation of mass. hope this helped.

I used my H2SO4 and added it to sugar, it warmed up a bit and smoked a little, then stayed warm. i poured out the new black liquid and there remained a thick, thick black glob. i poured both separately onto the ground, the liquid did nothing. the solid bubbled, heated and made smoke. there remained a pourous black solid. WHAT HAPPENED?

what was left was just a little extra sulfuric acid, that was stained by the carbon. when sulfuric acid is added to sugar, all that happens is that all water is taken out. sugar is just carbon with water (not that simple, but it's makeup is sort of), when sulfuric acid is added to that sucrose (only works on sucrose)all the water is sucked out, taking the h20 out of the equation leaving just the c4, carbon.
